Thread: Show us your garden

  1. #151
Agreed ……The lockdown has definitely forced me to get some jobs done, I’d normally put off !

Got a big ‘to do’ list drafted and made a good start , albeit with varying degrees of effectiveness !

Grass Feed & Weed – seemed to have a lot of moss this year, so got a fair bit of dead moss now
    Patio & Paths power washed
Decking power washed – was really dark brown ….most has come off but it’s a bit patchy
Footie field cut and some grass seed down as we had some moles this year.
Power washed some of the walls
Had a fair bit of moss of the winter on the driveways , so sprayed that

Despite all my moans though …..its nice that spring has finally arrived & we can enjoy the garden again !!!

No , I didn't ……..To be honest, its a complete pain in the ass.

Its a huge long Stainless Steel run and as such, really needs to be clear and clean to look good...…….living in the country, on the top of a hill, surrounded by trees is a nightmare . Everything blows around and lands in the damn thing.
Forever cleaning it out and chasing half the countryside's wildlife out of it !

Wow. Some really lovely gardens here!

Mine is very much a work in progress... got the youth burning off some of the old outhouse we took down.
Dug out about 8 tonnes of concrete to reinstate some lawn and beds, open up fence to the old allotment plot behind...
Let me update you in 2 weeks ;)

I've downloaded these pics and I've sent them to my Canadian in-laws who are currently in lockdown in their Spanish house. I'm sure that these current snowy pics will ease their pain of being unable to get outside!

I would love to see a pics of the work in progress! Mind you, burning wood like this, in your garden, would get you into a lot of trouble here in the Netherlands. The authorities would be called by neighbours within minutes or so.

    I’ll catalogue the progress!
Fires are ok here, I think... and I messaged the closest neighbour to warn her in advance, and only burned after about 7pm.
    No police attended the scene!

Very manicured garden, do you look after it yourself?

Love the house too, very interesting. Is it equally interesting on the inside? Perhaps someone should start a "Show us your house" thread.

Too much time working from home as usual or soaking up the rays, so garden needs some serious trimming LOL

    if you look through the workshop window at the end mind;

    You’ll see two of these;

    and about 6 of these from two dens;

Our “fox area” as we’’ve called it for past 16 years is the perfect area for these guys. Perfect green belt between long backing gardens.

This year we have two different litters about 4 weeks apart however both mums appear to share the suckling of all which is quite amazing to watch most early mornings or evenings.

Nothing like some of the gardens on here and waiting on a much needed revamp when we can get some help in, but this has become a haven during this period & not just for us. Given we're a typical suburban London area on top of the normal birds, squirrels, fox families etc we get, we are regularly visited (or more correctly the large apple tree behind the trampoline is) by a flock of 100+ green parakeets which always surprises/amuses me.

Lots of nice gardens on here.

I’m lucky enough to have a bit of land, to which I’ve been wanting to hedge and turn into an extension of my garden.

Being furloughed I suppose I have the time. Today’s destruction! Awaiting soil so I can plant my new hedging!

Not sure that lot will fit in the small green wheelie bin! Guessing that your planned hedge is going to need to stand up strong in the wind judging by how open it looks there too?

Haha. Not for the bin, your spot on. A few truck loads I think. Your right, it can be very windy. Worth it for the views though.

I'm going for a more natural, rustic look

Or more accurately I've not had the huge about of free time in lockdown that I'd originally expected!

This is, together with the 'shows us your dogs' thread, the nicest thread here in the G&D.

@Gyp: I wanted to type something garden-related, pointing towards a famous thread in the Bear Pit, but then I remembered that you've told us that your wife is working on the frontline in the NHS. Surely you and she have different things on your mind then a garden!

I'm sure this garden thing will sort out.

Yes, cheers - it's slightly more complicated in that we're living apart at the moment; not because we want to, but because she's working front line and I'm "at risk" it makes sense for the two of us to keep our distance. I moved out before lockdown (as she was being repatriated) with the intent to spend all the lockdown time sorting the garden here and doing lots of DIY. I've found myself working daft hours at home trying to get my work up and running again and am now working daft hours now it is, so all the gardening and DIY have been pushed down the agenda :-(

I think you've made a really nice transformation. I especially like the grey fence paint that you have used, its a nice contrast to the posts.

Can I please ask what brand & colour it is?

    Thanks

I wish there was a 'Like' button, It would be worn out though as there's so many fabulous gardens/dwellings in this thread!!

Here's mine, It's not very nice and now I struggle to get around with all the cr*p that the wife keeps buying for it, Swings, Tables, Chairs etc

We cop for a fair bit of snow sometimes, This was in 2010 when 18 of my Bonsai trees didn't wake up

We have some trees that are overgrown now too, The Pear tree to the left needs to come down and be burnt as it's full of disease that's affecting some of my Juniper Bonsai and giving them Rust, There's an Oak that was quite large when we moved in to the house thirty years ago that could do with reducing as it's dropping branches and next door have small children but the busy body over the end of our garden broke her neck almost to tell me I can't touch the tree as Bats roost in it, neve seen any guano below it though, Suppose i'll have to tell her that if anyone gets hurt then she'll have to shoulder the responsiblity as she told me that I can't do anything with it!

    Cheers, John

It's been rainy cold and down right nasty here for over a month now so no real green but with Covid and no work I finished my sprinklers for my veggie garden. If you click on the picture it should bring you to the short video of it working. It worked out really well to be honest.

    Show us your garden

My wife and I agree that our current house is too big with only one kid (still) at home. He will be to the uni in less than two years. We already decided to downsize. Corona has changed our perspective on what type of house we want to live in. 'Out' went the idea of an apartment and 'in' came the idea of a smaller house with a large garden. There's a 22 X 9 meter workshop on the premises. (I suddenly have friends who want to store their trailers, camper vans, caravans, boats etc...) and a wooden summer holiday home that's in a sorrow state. I'll have that removed and replaced with a garden house / workshop for my wife for her sewing, painting etc.

We found a house on 6 acres (±25,000 m2)... 90% is woodland, 10% is lawn and the plot is adjacent to the Royal Grounds and Forestry. Technically, my new neighbour is our King.

    West side of the house:

    East side of the house

    Path to the workshop

    Stunning garden.

Just a word of warning: whilst you might keep the frogs, introducing fish, particularly sticklebacks, may very well scare your newts away.

Exactly this. On top of that, a pond should be allowed to dry if the weather dries it ou: that is fine, and excellent for the wildlife (especially newts). Put fishes in and you can’t let it go dry.

I really like the view! Given the lack of space here in this country, I would be automatically worried living where you live: a city council member who comes up to build something new on that beautiful patch of land you show us. That's happening all the time here! Luckily I'm moving to a conservation area and going to live next door to the Royal Grounds and Forestry. No way that the royals will allow a block of houses on their doorstep.

People who I've told that we're going to move ask if I have any connection to the royals or the royal household for finding my new house. My gardener who trims my current house' hedges (and who works for the Grounds and Forestry during the day) told me that the spot would become available.

    My current garden:

My new garden - well, the workshop

my wife's workshop; it's going to be replaced for a new one

Patch of grass behind the workshop. I think I'm going to make a putting green or similar. How's that: 'putting on you now spot of land!' The land extends about 100 m from where the tree line in the back starts. Neighbour to the left and right are 150 mtrs from the edge of my land, neighbour in the back is 6 kms away (the Royal Palace).

I don’t know about a putting green, you could make that area into a lovely par 3!!

It makes me smile when I see the size of your new place Menno after you said a few times that when you move you will probably downsize.
Sometimes the new property just calls out to us.

That’s true. But COVID made us aware that we would become truely unhappy on a concrete slab called ‘balcony’. We were totally relaxed and happy in our garden during the Dutch ‘semi-lockdown’ and it was my wife who brought it up, saying: “How would we feel being stuck on a balcony?”

I must say that I’m a little overwhelmed by the size of the new plot. I am surfing the ‘net like crazy to find out about forestry, bee-keeping, machinery for woodlands etc.

Bee-keeping is very much on my radar.

Those workshops are classic examples of the "WWII prison camp hut" school of architecture.

    "10 days of isolation, Hogthrob."

    "It's Captain Hogthrob."

    "20 days."

    PS
    Love the garden, Menno.

Finally got my back garden changed this year, last job in the house to do, I wanted a courtyard i could enjoy and entertain in as I have a big garden at the front.

It’s not as big as others but I do enjoy chilling outside in it now...

    Before...

    After...
