    What supermarket wine you drinking?

So there is a post about what beer people are drinking, but what about what bottle of wine have you discovered that's worth a look.

Challenge - under a tenner a bottle what would you recommend?

After living in France for a number of years, coming home was a shock to what you have to pay for a nice bottle

At the moment I'm really liking a couple of 'drinkable' bottles

For a red - workshop Shiraz from Morrisons usually in their two for a tenner deal - bargain!

For white - Lyme Block from Aldi

Rose - I'd go with the organic Spumante again from Aldi

So what are you guys and gals drinking??

I just get Beyerskloof Pinotage from Sainsbury’s or Morrisons it’s the only drink that doesn’t give me a headache so I just stick to that even though I like others they don’t like me.

    Waitrose own Claret
    Waitrose Côte de Provence
Waitrose La Gioiosa Prosecco Superiore blah blah blah (13 quid or somefink) are quaffable. Tesco Picpoul is not bad, IMO it's on par with the screw top one sold in Majestic also under the tenner. There is no champaign which I like priced around the given price bracket, so n/a ;)

Where my father lives in Northern Spain, the local plonk is Albariño. Best white wine in my opinion. Glad that Sainsbury's do it for a few quid for when he is over here. I can't drink anymore but if I did, that would be my choice.

I do not drink much, but there are some obligatory choices that always keep in the pantry:

for roasts and cheeses, usually buy Chianti Classico, Monte Maione from Watrose is one I like
for aperitifs and cocktails prosecco Gera Valdo, from Waitrose
for cooking and cool with fish, Solini IGP Pinot Grigio found a bit everywhere

If you mean sold at supermarkets rather than own brand, I buy Gallo Family Merlot now and again.

It stays very drinkable for some time after opening so no excuse for having too much!!

Buying wine in the UK is a total rip off and there is nothing you can do about it.

I see wines selling in Lidl for around £7 in the UK and for about €2.5 in Spain. This is for the identical wine in the identical bottle.

I also visit the local Bodega and buy a lovely local wine where I have to take my own container and I pay €8 for 5 litres.

Why I ever bother to return to the over crowded and over priced UK is a mystery I cannot work out.

Perhaps I have a particularly unsophisticated palate, but I find it hard to distinguish any difference in quality between wines under a tenner (Spanish plonk possibly excepted). If you're after a cabernet or Shiraz type wine, then you might find that the cheapest 'Australian Red Wine' is as good as any.

When buying alcohol in the UK you're buying liquid tax. Why compare it to the price in another country? Spanish have different tax policy.

I was thinking about those people that call our island over crowded yesterday while I was out cycling. I passed two people the hour I was out, an a couple of cars passed me.

93% of the UK isn't urban, if you feel the country is overcrowded it's probably because you're visiting the 7% of the country that's built up. There's nowhere better this time of year, than the British countryside.

    All from Aldi.
    Freeman’s Bay Pinot Gris
Marsanne, as highlighted on Sunday Brunch and the Exquisite range Albariño.
Each of them , IMO, are excellent .

I had some of Waitrose's own LBV port the other day when visiting a friend. It struck me as being eminently quaffable.

I'm in the states, but second this. Over here Malbec is very affordable.

Louis Jadot Beaujolais-Villages is another one I look for at Hy-Vee.

    Cheers!

    From Waitrose:
    Kendermans Riesling
    Rustenberg John Merriman
And a rather good Gruner Veltliner- Moosburgerin

I’m a real Aldi fan, so would say the following:-
    Champagne at around £12
Cava in the gold bottle around £5.50
    Exquisite Collection Argentinian Malbec £7
    SIA Gerwerstramina/Reisling £5.50
    Cremant at around £8
Plenty of other great wines and spirits, they’ve just launched a Kraken Rum copy at under £15/bottle too!

    RED

Dark Horse from Tesco. Until last year I never bought Californian wine and rarely bought Cab Sav. Then got this recommendation and still picking up a couple of bottles for the rack most weekends. It punches so much higher than its price tag of £8.50, and occasionally reduced to £7.

    WHITE

Villa Maria, Sauvignon from Aldi. £7.99 I think, and very good.

Love to hear if anyone decides to take a punt on one of these and what their thoughts are?

I'm a fan of the Dark Horse Cab Sav, also tried the Malbec & Merlot, but this one is the winner for me! Nice to agree

From Sainsburys, Graffigna Centenario Reserve Malbec is a very nice wine too, worth a try when on offer at £7.00 a bottle

Trivento Reserve Malbec is another good call...

£8 from Tesco, but often cheaper from their Budgens stores if you look for it.

I tried that Picpoul that you recommended - quite a light character and pleasant considering the price point.

    Aldi - Francois Dubessy Malbec @ £5.50

    Co-op - Les Jamelles Syrah @ £7.00

    Delicious, especially at those prices!

Think for me this thread has demonstrated that one man's meat is another man's poison

Tried the Aldi Stellenbosh and didn't like it at all, tasted rough to me
Aldi Argentinian Malbec was very drinkable, but a bit bland for me.

    My go to reds are
Yellow Tail Shiraz (the yellow label one) £6 most places
Hardys Bankside 2 for £10 in Morrisons
    Lindeman Tollana £4.50 in Asda

Not a big white fan, but came to appreciate a nice Marlborough Sauv Blanc while i was out there some years ago
Oyster Bay is very good, can occasionally be found for under £8, i used to pick it up in Asda for a fiver 10 years ago
Recently discovered Mud House when i bought a bottle for the wife, really good, not too sweet, nice grassy notes, occasionally £7 in Morrisons, and my local Spar has it for £6 some times.

    Waitrose La Pluma Montepulciano

Also from Waitrose, Blackburn and James Californian Shiraz.

Lidl wines are allegedly drinkable, and we have a new branch which has recently appeared in the local village. I haven't tried it, but it does keep the riff-raff out of Waitrose.
Although no trees were harmed during the creation of this post, a large number of electrons were greatly inconvenienced.

Villa Maria sauvignon blanc always good and widely available. Inevitably on offer somewhere.

Reds, I've tried a few Portuguese Druro's recently. Sainsburys finish appeared on a Saturday food show recently and is good. The M+S version is currently on offer and a little better.

    Cheers
