Ok, I feel I need to get this off my chest.

I scoffed when this and the other Baselworld offerings were announced. I did.

Between you and I though, and don't share this with the rest of the forum; but I've been back to look at the press pics of this one more than once or twice since.

There you go. My wrist, but not my watch, the time and date on this one seemed stuck!

    Stunning

    Now THAT looks good

  9. #9
    Oh yes!!!

So that's a dial made of meteorite eh? That trumps the old Romaine Jerome titanic DNA watch in my opinion!

There's a certain dissonance between the ostentatious, showy elegance of the dial and the chunky steel tool watch case, but - it does look really good despite that, somehow.

Chunky white gold case and bracelet...not steel

Personally like it and trying to decide whether I prefer this or the full everose root beer

On this occasion, I have to say the press photo makes it look waaaaaay better than on the wrist. It’s a design combination I just don’t get.

Agreed. Needs to be either very dark dial or off-white. I guess difficult to gauge with rare natural material.

More of a piece to showcase the watchmaker’s skills with these materials IMO.

That looks really wrong, the dial overpowers the hands etc making it all look washed out. Might just be the picture but not for me.

The wrist shot doesn't sell it at all well. It looks a bit mother-of-pearl-ish, compared to the first photo where it looks like Omega's dark meteorite dials.

Although, looking at the official pic, you can see where a certain artistic licence has been taken to darken it, leaving just a hint of its true colour.

Is a meteorite dial actually something from space? Or just a nickname?

Either way I’d agree the press shots look cooler than the wrist shot :(

So who’s watch is it? Could we see your watch or another shot - that watch looks awful, sorry. Not for me at all.

    I am not the OP!

Someone asked for a wrist shot of the model - I posted one, from when I tried the model on.

The watch in my pic is clearly one of the demo non functioning models that Rolex use for post Baselworld events. Date set to 28, time 10:10:31. Other than the fixed hands it is identical to a working model.

Perhaps the OP hasn’t collected his yet, hence posted a press photo?

Ah! Thanks for the explanation. Shame it doesn’t look great in that photo - it could be the harsh lighting I guess. Maybe it’s one to see in the flesh? What did you make of it when you saw it? Hope no hard feelings. (To you or the OP).

Same watch on my wrist at a Rolex launch dinner. I too feel that the meteorite in this demo piece is too light. IMG_3970.JPGIMG_3972.JPG

Certainly no hard feelings Martyn. The lighting doesn’t do it any favours in my pic. It looked better than I was expecting, but not enough for me to want to try it on for a second time.

Actually made from a meteorite that arrived on Earth in prehistoric times.

Unique material but it looks awful from the wrist shots.

The comments above have hit the nail on the head for me actually - if it was as dark in real life as the pic the OP posted (a charcoal shade) I reckon I'd be smitten. The photos of the non-working press sample look a lot lighter though, and I suspect there won't be much variation in tone between different examples - the Omega dials are treated with an acid to create that darker shade iirc.

I like it a lot but think that the meteorite dial would be more striking if it was combined with a black bezel. That said I'd still have it in a heartbeat.

  34. #34
I assume the dial changes colour in the light, I’ve seen meteorite dials like that in the past. Dark, I like, light I don’t. A bit too fussy for me but I can see the attraction

Precious metal “tool” watch simply doesn’t work for me. And the dial looks like my hallway wall after I tried plastering it.

Can't see what all the fuss is about with these meteorite dials ... always difficult to see the actual time properly, and they always look a bit "cheap" to me ... :-)

Absolutely get the concept - but not convinced by the result...something along the light/dark issue others have mentioned

Congrats on your pickup! I've never been that into meteorite dials and the legibility doesnt seem to be all that

I am not sure who you are congratulating. I don't think anybody posting on the thread has the real deal including the OP.

  48. #48
Not for me. There doesn’t appear to be enough contrast between the hands and the dial which would compromise legibility, an increasingly important factor for me as my sight deteriorates.
