    Sotheby's Important Watches auction.

I was idly browsing this earlier: https://www.sothebys.com/en/auctions...html?locale=en

A real mixed bag, ranging from the sublime to the ridiculous, and the exquisite to the really quite vulgar. Some great watches, and a dud or two. There's a J W Benson perpetual calendar chronograph that I'm coveting, a Roger Smith that's perfection, and a Rolex pocket watch I'd quite like to own. The Cartier Monopusher chronograph (lot 44) strikes a bum note - if that watch has been professionally refinished by Cartier, then they haven't done a particularly good job. The quality of the work on the dial is laughable.

If money were no object, what pieces(s) would you all be going for?

Lot No. 29, Girard Perregaux tribute to Enzo Ferrari, if I was asked to choose one watch.
At 43mm and colourful face it would have bags of wrist presence.

So many beautiful watches... I think my pick would be any of the AL&S lots 23-25 or 63.

Not sure the Tiffany at lot 52 would work well on my wrist!

There's a Hulk with an estimate of £3-£5k... is that to promote interest?

I like the glacier blue dial platinum day date.

It doesn't seem like long ago when a watch like that was a multiple of any stainless steel model. Looks a steal at $20-30,000!

    Some nice pieces there.
Last few Sotheby’s watch auctions have had some very overpriced sales.

Heh. But what a fabulous thing that Tiffany clock is. If only I had the funds. And the space...

How does an international sale like that work - am I right in thinking that in any event the transaction would be deemed to take place in NYC, with duties due on import to the UK?

If by duty you mean VAT I don’t think such applies to second hand goods.
