Can’t believe he’s gone. What a legend. He had a lung transplant recently I read. RIP.
I knew he’d been ill but that’s still a shock. He was one of those people I expected to live forever!
RIP Niki.

A totally inspirational man .
The film Rush was based on his rivalry with James Hunt , a good film but very fast and loose with the truth.

An absolute legend. One of the greatest F1 drivers ever. Very sad to hear of his death.
A true star, shocked and saddened to hear this. RIP Niki.
I was a big F1 fan back in the days of Clark, Stewart, Donohue, Lauda, et al. Nikki's comeback from that horrific, fiery crash was miraculous and bordering on superhuman!
R.I.P. Nikki
That's a shame. He seemed to be a true gentleman of sport; there for the competition and not the politics. Great man.
Very sad news indeed. A real legend in every respect.
Legend. I guess I'll be watching Rush tonight.
F1 legend and hero. Very sad for his family, friends and for all F1 fans.
RIP.

Very saddened to see this. Drove in an era when too many drivers were killed or seriously injured.
Must have had balls of steel to get behind the wheel again, so soon after his horrific injuries.
Also had a very successful airline business after retiring.
The word legend gets banded around a lot but he deserved the title.
Guess him and James Hunt can be reacquainted again!
Sorry to hear that. He was a brilliant driver when Formula One seemed a lot more exciting.
Started out with nothing. Still have most of it left.
RIP Nikki, a very brave man
Absolute legend in F1. Brave and stoic to the end. RIP Niki.
Incredibly brave to make that comeback. As mentioned, a real legend
RIP Niki

An inspirational man. RIP Niki.
a very sad day, RIP
Very sad news. I loved listening to him on F1 because he pandered to no one and told it as it was.
He will be sorely missed.
For anyone interested there's a fascinating series of interviews with him on YouTube, well worth an hour of time
https://youtu.be/d_H05gpykGQ
Quite a remarkable bloke and as tough as nails with determination to match.
I was listening to Jackie Stewart on the radio earlier and he was describing Lauda’s come back race after being almost burnt to death 6 weeks earlier. He said by the end of the race, blood was pouring out of his helmet after it had basically undone most of the skin grafting work that was still healing.
A totally different calibre from today’s lot.
RIP Nikki Lauda an amazing man. In 1976 I was following James Hunts campaign to win the world championship & went to Zolder on a coach trip with Page & Moy. Unfortunately James broke down & Nikki went on to win. 1976, what a year in F1 with Nikki,s crash and amazing comeback and Ferrari,s protests. High drama right to the end at the Japanese Grand Prix.
I was 8 years old in that barmy summer of '76 and was James Hunt mad .... the Brands Hatch GP was in July and we were on holiday somewhere and I remember only being able to listen to it on the radio ....
there are loads of podcasts but there is one on BBC which is only 30 mins and covers the '76 season detailing Niki's accident and the remarkable comeback to Monza

Sorry to be a pedant but it’s Niki not Nikki.
I can but echo all of the other comments here. One of the great drivers of that era. RIP.
Very sad to hear of Niki Lauda's death today He was a very worthy 3-time world champion! Which probably would have been 4 titles except for the dreadful Nurburgring accident.
Also the only driver to come out of retirement to regularly win races again and of course another world title. Speaking of his retirement comeback, he further stamped his personaility on his very first race after missing 2 seasons........by promptly organising the only F1 drivers strike! https://www.riccardopatrese.com/the-gp-drivers-strike
The F1 world will miss the passing of this huge personality in the world of F1.
RIP to the Rat

So so sad, RIP Nikki. Didn't realise he was so ill, I've missed most of the races this season
RIP Nikki.
He won his last GP in 1985 in Zandvoort, which was also the last GP on Dutch soil, when they are back in Zandvoort next year they will do the first new GP in honour of Nikki .
Got a new watch, divers watch it is, had to drown the bastard to get it!
rip, great driver and a legend
Surprised the Beeb hadn't re-run this earlier, but it's finally back on iPlayer:
