It's worth bearing in mind this post from the OP on another thread:

If you aren't happy with waiting for a watch that will, when it comes, be fresh off the Rolex delivery, and have carried on looking, and are pleased that a large chain have found exactly the thing you wanted in next to no time, then the packaging is likely show signs of having been doing its job of keeping the watch safe and sound while it gets moved around from branch to branch.

I thought the watch was despatched in its ‘coffin’ from Rolex, and that the store keeps a collection of boxes into which the watch goes. So blame the dealer, not Rolex. Although, in this case, the outer box was just doing its job.
What’s the OP going to do when he wears the watch and it gets a few marks? The horror.....

    Did you buy used watch?

    No?

Return the thing and have them find a clean one.

    It doesn't matter.

If you buy a brand new car and it is delivered covered in pidgeon crap, that would also be alright, I suppose?

You bought a new watch, with inner and outer box. It should be new.

Not the same at all. If a new car was delivered with seat protectors and one was bit dirty would you make a fuss?

There's a mildly interesting, and certainly faintly ridiculous, discussion to be had here.

At what point may the assorted 'wrappings' reasonably cease to be regarded as purely protection and, instead, as part of the item being bought? If the protection itself must be pristine then it ceases to be protection. If the box and protective sleeve come, in turn, in a branded plastic bag, does that also have to be in perfect condition, requiring Rolex to wrap it in an additional bag, presumably non-branded, to avoid further 'liability'? If there are n wrappings, should n-1 be pristine? Deep questions ...

The solution is for Rolex to provide their watches in a Tesco’s bag. Or, on second thoughts, Waitrose.

    Believe it or not.
I took mine in Sainsbury's bag as didn't want to attract any attention and was traveling by public transport from Central London.

When I last bought a car I inspected it and a bit needed cleaning so I asked the dealer to clean it, without asking the combined wisdom of the forum. What I didn’t inspect was the various protective films and wrappings the car had on during its transportation. The item I bought was fine and fit for purpose.

Retail stock rooms aren’t sterile environments and the odd mark on protective packaging isn’t something I’d worry about. I’d put those outer boxes in the loft, or bottom of the wardrobe, or somewhere else out of sight.

I’ve also bought and sold the odd watch and don’t ever recall the likes of Watchfinder asking if the outer boxes were unmarked so they could adjust their valuation accordingly.

In short it makes no difference to the condition of the product, its functionality, or its value (unless covered in pigeon crap).

It's a frikkin waiting list "I will keep the papers " Rolex FFS. It's not a 50£ Seiko.

And it's not a box. As much as Rolex is not a watch.

    It should be peeeerfeeeect.

Rolex are not that expensive. Almost everyone on here has one or more. I think the OP is expecting too much for a mere £5k watch.

This could be added to any thread on most forums across the internet, and make anyone re-think and re-analyse. It's not specific to this thread.

I am sorry for your predicament (as I am for all those who suffer in this world) and I wish you every blessing.

What has a chemo has to do with this? Been there done that btw.

If OP bought a new watch, there should have been delivered in BNIB condition. Regardless of price.

I am sure it was BNIB- brand new in box unless you meant BNINB- brand new in new box:-)

    Well .. that's also option.

    BNIBIBIB.

    *Sarcasm mode off*

With all the fuss about waiting lists and other AD nonsense this whole thread is absurdity in a nutshell.

I think the OP has been given an unnecessary hard time.

There was a smiley face at end of my initial reply but which did not display. These watches are expensive and with ever important discussions about having all the boxes, papers etc which add/retain value, why would you want a damaged box. It is all part of the package and as such, is important in my opinion.

Had this been a discontinued NOS watch, then you would have to accept or reject the package.

I am OCD about my watches but have not reached the peak of retaining stickers from a de-stickered watch. Everyone has their own level of what is normal and the differences should be respected in my opinion.

Unless I missed a subtle use of irony in your post , I think you need to get a grip on reality. If you don't think £5k is insanely expensive for anything, let alone a watch, you are out of touch. There are people who have to live for a year on that sort of money. I am certainly not poor, but I don't have a Rolex.

A bit of subtle irony maybe, but an outer cardboard box is just a bit of disposable packaging. "Oh! my Cadbury's bar of chocolate had a scuff on the outer wrapper. Should I take it back?" I suppose some might. But would you bother to consult with 10k guys on a chocolate forum? Anyone over the age of 5 should be able to make that decision themselves.

And if you argue that there is a difference between a £5k watch and a £2 bar of chocolate, I would answer that its all relative. The outer disposable packaging is still outer disposable packaging.

It's not ideal but Rolex boxes are garbage anyway. Inner, outer, cushion the lot. Cheap nasty tat. I bought a Zenith Stratos and Milgauss a couple of months apart and the difference was startling. One was green leatherette and cloth covered cardboard in box you'd expect to keep fishing tackle in and one was polished wood, brass and plush lining. Think Poundland vs Harrods.
