Picked up the explorer today and all great until I got home and realised the outer Rolex box ( cream cardboard one ) is rather dirty and marked up.
Is it worth taking the out box back and saying give me a fresh one on Monday or am I being a tad over dramatic ?

I'm pretty fussy, but no way I'd be bothered by that outer box. Just get on and enjoy the watch, that box will be stored away and no way will affect resale value.
I would not worry about it... you dont wear the outer cardboard box.
I mean its purpose is to protect the actual rolex box....
So the outer box has done its job then

As long as the green box, inside white liner and watch itself are in perfect nick, that wouldn't bother me personally.

I have have an outer box that is marked but refrained from returning it. I didn’t notice it until I got home as I was preoccupied with the watch. If I had noticed it while at the AD, it would have felt easier asking for it to be exchanged. How do they end up in that condition?
If you have another question/issue, I would email them and say oh by the way outer box was marked... etc. This may appear less dramatic. On one hand, a fortune is paid for such watches and there is an expectation that all should be perfect. On the other hand, you managed to get a stainless steel Rolex and should be grateful.

Even Rolex boxes are expensive these days, so I'd suggest returning it but only when they have a replacement for you. Also, email them so it's in writing. They might challenge you as to why you didn't mention it in the shop before leaving, however.
But no, you're not being bothered over nothing in my opinion.

I heard that white boxes are originally wrapped in a cling film. Be sure to ask dealer to supply that too!!!
No factory clingfilm to be retained by the customer. It's policy :-p

It's definitely annoying as there is a novelty in buying new Rolex from the AD and had you noticed in the shop then sure challenge it.
For now may I suggest that you forget about it and enjoy the watch as all the rest of the items are immaculate and brand new.

As I understand it the watches are shipped to ADs in the plastic "coffin" boxes with polystyrene inserts along with the guarantee cards, hang tag(s) etc. The ADs hold stock of the inner and outer boxes and transfer the watch into them at the point of sale for reason of presentation.
With presentation being the operative word I think that's pretty sloppy on the part of your AD. All things considered I wouldn't be very impressed...

Dude, it’s a box containing a box containing the item of actual interest. In a sane world, the state of ancillary packaging should be irrelevant (save from posing an environmental ‘is such packaging actually necessary’ question). Is your question really ‘does the slightly scuffed state of the outer protective packaging affect the resale value of the watch’? I don’t know the answer to that one, but I really hope it’s no!

I really couldn't get worried about this. It could be argued that the outer white sleeve has performed its intended duty and protected the green inner box.
When you get to my age you don't tend to be too fussy about the state of the box
I see what you did there...and sadly it's true.
I agree, however a quick wipe with a damp cloth before it’s presented isn’t too much to ask surely? Especially as it will probably be ages until it’s seen again.

Isn't there a shop in Burlington Arcade that just specialisers in Rolex outer boxes? I'm sure there are homage versions available as well. Not to mention fakes! Of course, there is always the grey market.

You do know - you have the white outer cardboard protector missing, which is designed to protect the cream coloured box you are showing - that protects the green box.
I always place the complete box set inside a plastic bag (with desecant) for protection - you never know if it may get damaged or scuffed.
Buying from an AD should mean you get new items - looks like you have a scuffed up old box. If that is important to you - take it back to be exchanged (the box that is).

Outrageous, send the watch back; keep the money and buy a nice cheap Citizen or similar. Then you won’t have to worry. I expect the box will be immaculate too.
I have a feeling this thread will enter the hallowed halls of TZUK legend, one to reminisce over in future years.
I have a customer who demands that when he buys a cellophane wrapped item from me it must be completely intact, then he rips it off to open the box of tools, if the cellophane is damaged at all he won’t buy them even if it means missing out on the deal, personally I think it’s pathetic, but he’s the customer.

Not that I know anything, but my guess is that the condition of the box is probably related to
- rather than make you wait for a delivery from Rolex, they found one sitting around somewhere in the estate, and IBTed it over for you. If you like, the state of the box - in tool watch daydream parlance, its battle scars - bears testimony to the speed with which they got you the watch, and so something to be treasured, right?
In my experience those cream boxes very easily & quickly get marked/scuffed. Tuck it away in a cupboard and no future buyer will be concerned

I'd be outraged; just think in the drop in value come resale time. It's the state of the box the true WIS looks for and I dare say this will cost you thousands.
You’ve just spent thousands on a new watch. Question is, are you enjoying it or have you spent most the time worrying about a cardboard box? With prices the way they are it’s not everyday we buy watches now. You really should enjoy it.
Think how liberating it would be if you threw the cream box in the recycling, chucked the green box in the loft. And wore the watch with no regard to scratches and the alike. Like ‘normal’ people.
Good grief man! Most normal humans throw all the packaging away immediately!!! And the instructions and warranty documentation.....
But anyway, who cares? How often are you going to admire a dull cream box?? Its not even badly marked! Its not as if it was stoved in or water damaged.

Given all the well documented crap AD's make customers go through when they get a new Rolex, I don't think it's unreasonable that all the packaging is mint if it's a new watch.
It's not the end of the world that the box is dirty & it might not bother me, but if you're paying money & it bothers you ask for a new one.
In fairness I doubt Eddie would provide a watch in a box that looks as tatty as that, so why should a Rolex AD for a watch that costs a lot more do it?

If you collected in person, you should have asked them to get you a different one if it bothers you
If it still bothers you, you can go to the AD and ask for a replacement
Pointless asking a bunch of strangers if you should be offended be bothered. Even though you will find plenty of sad souls willing to be offended by proxy.

People who fret over a couple of marks on an outer box should probably not be buying multi thousand pound watches IMO.
Actually wearing the watch would bring on an OCD nightmare.
