    Rationalisation quandary

My interest in watches has waned over the last year or two, and certainly over the last 9 months since bikes came to the fore. Accordingly, I'm going to move some of my collection on in the coming weeks.

My quandary comes in the form of my simple dressy watches, namely these three (of which I intend to keep two):

1960 IWC Ingenieur 666 AD - a birth year watch and one of the most collectable of the old IWC's. This one is a beauty.

1960 Jeager LeCoultre K880 - another birth year watch, in solid gold and with an astounding calibre from JLC. Unusually good condition.

2016 Grand Seiko 130th Anniversary SBGW033 - this watch was released back in 2012 as Seiko’s limited edition 130th Anniversary model and a tribute to the first ever Grand Seiko. Almost impossible to find and took me 4 years to source.

My inclination at the moment is to keep the IWC and the GS, but I have to say that it would be hard to let the JLC go as it's so nice an example (and it's a birth year, which I rather like). Anyway, I've added a poll and would be interested in any views that might be expressed.

No access to polls on forum app, so I'm not sure what question you've asked. But from what you've written, it seems there's a disconnect between your thinking you need to sell and your feelings about these three watches - are you trying to cajole yourself into finding a reason for selling one of them? It can be very hard to square one's thoughts about one's collection as a whole and the individual watches. iirc you've more than once regretted selling a watch, and here I see three more candidates for that....

I think your inclination is right…

Keep the IWC…. It’s the standout watch amongst that trio

If it were me I'd keep all three and sell the bike, you fool.

I would keep the JLC, if you are going to have a special dress watch it may as well be gold.

Your one of the forum stalwarts, you can’t be loosing your mojo for watches!
I had a 1960 9ct gold Omega very similar to the JLC, I loved it but it just wasn’t going to be worn so it was sold and I haven’t really regretted it.

How far is your rationalisation v’s the size of your collection going to go?

I'd also keep the jlc as it's gold. I voted to keep the iwc also, it would be harder to get back than the seiko I suspect.

I go for vintage every time (you only need a couple of modern watches in my view) and so would get rid of the GS. Plus the other two are birth year and one gold one steel. Having said that, Grand Seiko have never interested me in the slightest so that may be clouding my judgement.

  10. #10
The IWC and JLC commemorate your birth year, and you have a nice mix of gold and steel and date and no date.

The GS commemorates Grand Seiko’s birth. Is this significant to you?

I'm a fan of GS as you know Tony, but from those three I would definitely be keeping the JLC and IWC and especially as they're birth year watches, and assuming that you do actually wear the gold JLC. If you don't wear the JLC because it's gold, then that's the decision easily made.
Alternatively if you love all three then why not sell one of your non dress watches so you can keep all these, which are all lovely.

  12. #12
    Keep all three, much easier.
It's just a matter of time...

  13. #13
I’m also losing the love a little and have downsized considerably
But, back on track, keep the IWC and flip a coin on the others
I suspect you’ll put more in the bike fund if you sell the GS...

The IWC is a beauty and definitely a keeper. I'd also hold onto the JLC.

Tony although i don't have as many expensive watches as yourself i have reduced my collection as i have other hobbies.

My solution was which one does not get any wear.

If i haven't worn it for 12 months it was sold.

So which of the three do you wear most...sell the one you don't.

All three are beautiful watches so if it were me the thought process would be that I would want to keep a birth year watch, I would choose one of the two stainless, so by a process of elimination my choices to keep would be the the JLC and the GS.

TBH if I were to be able to keep only one of the three it would be the JLC.

I don't envy you having to make the choice.

This somewhat follows what I am going to loosely call the logic behind my thoughts too.

Further, the IWC has been a watch of interest to collectors for all the time I have been seriously into watches and the JLC must have been produced in such low numbers it's sure to be scarce (being precious helps too - it could save your life in an emergency 🙄). Sell the Seiko.

FWIW I would sell the IWC. For me, I don’t need for a date on a dress watch and GS and JLC speak more to me than IWC.

I'm in a minority but JLC + GS for me. To my eye, the JLC looks really classy, a much prettier and cleaner design than the IWC, which looks a little industrial in comparison - neither the date nor the dial markings do it for me.

I would keep the IWC and the JLC personally, if you set on selling one and can’t decide advertise all three and see which sells first, decision made?

Which would you select to wear over the others? I appreciate that's over simple but we all struggle with these simple questions because we over complicate them with all of the other criteria, how hard to find, what bases does it cover in the collection, monetary and personal value etc.
I suspect the JLC and IWC are more special to wear due to their vintage so keep them. I'm leaning increasingly towards vintage so think it's an age thing!

    Easy call IMO.

If you weren't a WIS (not that I'm calling you an idiot ) then the GS would subjectively never get a look in, it's just a vanilla modern watch.

The other two are not just asthetically lovely watches but classy vintage watches - rather like the classy (almost) vintage owner.

The IWC is a very special watch (heritage, classic looks and rare), the JLC is a beauty of a classic gold gents watch of its era.

I'd lose either the IWC or the GS, as most similar in this trio. I'd personally keep the GS, as the IWC leaves me cold (but appreciate you feel otherwise, as per your post). On the grounds that a birth watch would tend to be worn more on special occasions, the JLC seems the most special of this trio (to me an outsider).

Thanks everyone - some interesting views, and the poll is probably going in the direction I thought it would.

Just for clarity, I probably wear all three equally and genuinely do love them all. However, in a couple of years we're going to be moving over to Tenerife so Bea can be closer to her parents, and I very much doubt that I'll take more than half a dozen watches (at most). I'm probably trying to make the reduction more of a transition than a fire sale, if that makes sense.

Anyway, I'll keep listening to opinions and watching the poll... it doesn't help that I really am fond of all of them, though.

The IWC is a special watch for many technical and historical reasons, not least that SmithS copied the pellaton auto winding mechanism. The JLC is simply elegant, understated class... pure dress watch porn. The Seiko is an artifice created to seduce watch collectors. It's an easy decision in my opinion. Three wonderful watches by the way.

Another vote saying sayonara to the seiko - which is a bit daft as I’m currently in Japan planning to pick up my first GS!

I would keep the GS for sure as it’s amazing!

Of the other two, I think I would keep the JLC, but mainly for the shallow reason that I’m not keen on date windows with this kind of watch, so would let the IWC go

I’m massively jealous of the GS

Bikes are way more fun than watches. Most WIS are just weirdos anyway. Sell them all and try Motocross in your spare time.

  30. #30
I couldn't participate in the poll as my option is not there- keep all three.
Bikes are a sign of midlife crisis and it shall pass. Watches will be there for ever.
Unless 30% of your BSA ( body surface area ) is covered with ink, or you are big and hursuit ( which you are not ) the fascination for bikes will end soon ( purely my opinion but as good as any scientific data  ). Watches are a much more classier pursuit and a more durable passion.

If storing them is not an issue and you don’t either need the money or intend to replace one, keep all three.
If one has to go, keep the JLC and the GS

The obvious answer is to play it safe and keep IWC and JLC, as the IWC is a solid classic and the JLC is a known quantity with impeccable heritage, as well as being different due to being gold. While the GS does have its own heritage, modern GS still feels like a new brand that’s finding its place, and no one knows how the current pieces will feel in future - it depends on how things go and if the brand consolidates its place in the horological top tier.

However, that’s the head speaking. In reality, if I owned those watches, the JLC probably wouldn’t get out that often. Apart from anything else, gold doesn’t suit me, and my vintage dress watches have only rarely been worn - funnily enough with the exception of a vintage Seiko. I have very much lusted after that GS though, and suspect it really would get worn. But then, for me it’s something I always fancied trying and haven’t, while you’ve been there and done that, and I don’t know which you would miss most.

Fwiw i would keep the JLC and pass on the other two. I like gold for a dress watch and the fact that it is your birth year makes it more special.

They are all lovely watches, so I would try to be pragmatic about it. Either sell the one that will bring the most cash in for your other hobbies, or sell whichever brings most back against what you paid.

Tony. If you have to sell one of these and all things you have mentioned considered. I would sell the (Grand) Seiko. How many others have you got to sell to get down to 6??

Can’t quite follow your logic though, as shipping a bike is a whole lot worse than shipping a small watch box.

I get it. My new vice is high-end vinyl hifi, plus three bikes (but we won’t mention those). Makes the gamut of watches here look cheap. Btw, keep the IWC. Sell me the JLC.

What a sweeping and condescending statement. There are loads of bikers here on TZ, with and without tattoos. Some, like myself passed their test at 17 and have been riding for 30 years. Others for there own personal reasons may have always wanted to get a bike but life, family, children, finances and a myriad of other reasons got in the way.
For me, watches would go, way before my bikes. I can use my phone to tell the time. Midlife crisis is a term coined by individuals happy to plod through life doing what's expected of them. Wash the car on a Sunday and maybe visit the garden centre and have a nice cup of tea.
I always thought Watch enthusiasts would be a bit geeky and dull but I've shared a few beers and had a great laugh with many on here. Would never judge a person by their interests.

As a complete novice and ignorant of the history and value of the three, purely on aesthetics I would rank them at
    IWC
    GS
    JLC

Stick to watches and drop the bikes, before one drops you. I know, it's my day to day.

Mind you, life's quieter in the balaeric's.

    Sell the Seiko........simple!

i would keep the IWC (for the time being) and let the other two go.......if you are ultimately looking to reduce your collection to six watches then you are going to have to be ruthless.

  45. #45
IWC definitely stands out for me as well and the 666 seems to be creeping up in value all the time. Keep the IWC.

For some variety Tony, I would keep the JLC and the GS (if that grinds, then swap the GS for the IWC in my comment and vote).
When you look long into an abyss, the abyss looks long into you.........

  47. #47
Like you, my initial thoughts were to keep the IWC and GS, for no better reason than they are my personal favourites. That said, it did occur to me that as part of a streamlining scheme, you might have greater versatility if you kept one steel and one gold watch, which means the JLC should stay!!

The more I think about it, the more I could talk myself round in circles.

So after much cogitation I voted to keep the JLC and the IWC.

But I d be gutted to see the GS go.

Problem with selling any of those watches is the difficulty of replacing them. I'd find it hard to let any go bit if I had to lose one it would be the JLC.

If you can't keep all 3 - then I agree with a lot of others in keeping the IWC and JLC
