I didn't say a Rolex in that thread, so I guess it makes sense to admit in this thread that what I want, what I really really want, is a chocolate dial, rose gold Skydweller. I doubt I've the wrist for it in steel, let alone the lifestyle for it in gold, but, ah, what a dream
Yummmm.
It's just a Seiko. under the radar quality watch.
Buying a non Rolex watch simply would not do. If no Rolex was available, I would grate my teeth and buy a mobile phone.
It would have to be a Rouchefoucauld World Complication.

Grand Seiko Snowflake or Grand Seiko HAQ Diver.
AP Royal Oak jumbo extra thin. Not that I can afford it or even get one mind
Good idea for a thread, although maybe it needs a price limit, or it’s just Haute Horologie for all
Having given it some thought, and sticking to under £10K, I actually have no idea. Pretty happy with my Aerospace Evo, but it’s not mechanical. A lot of the watches I find interesting are because they complement, or are different to, ahem, Rolex
As a sole watch, Monaco is too square, Luminor too big, Bremont too military, or too large.
Maybe an IWC 3714, or a time only manual wind Grand Seiko

After a bit of thought I think I’d go for a vintage seamaster 300
That's what I'd go for

It would be my SKX007.
My Jaeger...
If I can't have a real Rolex, then I want a fake Rolex. However, that's not enough. What I want is a one off fake that is completely unavailable, from a waiting list that only I can get on to and preferably handmade. By me. (It's the only way to be sure.)
What I need is a fake Rolex hand made from the ground up using techniques so perverse as to make the finished product utterly unobtainable.
Obviously, a fake Rolex case has to be manufactured to exacting tolerances. However, for Artisan credibility, I'll need to do it all by hand. The fake has to be of a model so arcane as to be virtually unavailable to start with. Like the MK1 Octagonal Oyster.
I've made a start...
Apparently it take a year to make a fake Rolex...
Only vulgar know-nothings like Roger Smith and Laurent Ferrier would like Rolexes...
If you don’t like them, fine. It’s not a mark of virtue or knowledge. Expressed like above it’s boorish. I don’t know why you’d presume that others have arrived at their preferences ‘robotically’. Many people who chose Rolexes in that thread no doubt have had all sorts of watches, some of which are many times more expensive than a GMT or Seadweller.
To answer your question... I was tempted to say a Patek 1436 in steel, but that’s getting into the realm of proper historical importance given the production run of four, with only three extant (one was recased in yellow gold because no one wanted such an expensive watch in stainless steel).
I’d probably ‘settle’ for a more humble Patek perpetual calendar chronograph... a 3970 in white gold, perhaps. Probably a bit less delicate than the older stuff, too.
This is based on the assumption that I usually have my phone with me, and as such I might as well have something expensive, lovely, and complex to give me the best chance of not getting bored of it.
One of these bad boys!
Would have to get it new shoes once I'd pulled the trigger.
WIGH!
Omega Constellation or Cartier Pasha
Tudor Black Bay 58 ticks all the day-to-day boxes for me
Re: If you don’t like them, fine. It’s not a mark of virtue or knowledge.
This.Though the OP is not alone in this misconception. As Rusty would say- jilted lovers or something like that:-).
But I am sure you had your tongue firmly in cheek when you made the thread.
If no Rolex, I would probably opt for the next best thing- a Lolex.
Now we need a thread- what one watch that is not actually a watch?
Though I will give you that PRS is nice and a fine pic too

Easy... this.
Omega Aqua Terra would be my choice.
Breitling Aerospace. Blue dial, on Pro-II bracelet, however even more specific than that. It has to be post-Avantage (when the dial said Chrometre Certifie) but pre-Evo (43mm) and also pre-42mm Tuxedo. That means 2007-2010. They were still in the 42mm case but just said 'Chronometre Aerospace' and the dial was flat with no texture. Right now, it would be the last one I sell.
Chopard Chrono One. I talked about buying one of these since they were released, 2010, I think that was. I finally bought one NOS at the end of last year. A joy to wear. <+1s per day. I think I will sell my 1675 to pay for it ;)

This was my first thought too - great looking watch!

New Vacheron Overseas dual time with the Silver dial, also comes with a cool quick change strap system and a leather and rubber strap included so you'd have the look of three different watches
A one watch should be able to do smart / casual / swimming, so is probably a smart looking sports watch - stainless steel on bracelet, reasonably rugged, decent water resistance, not too huge. An Aqua Terra ticks those boxes, but is it exciting enough to be your only watch? Plus the new one has polished centre links, so that’s a no from me, while the old one is a bit thick and top heavy. And much as I enjoy GS, would I have one as an only watch? As others suggest, the Royal Oak and Overseas seem to do the trick, for a price. But the versions that actually fit me, which means 14790ST or possibly 15020ST, and first gen Overseas as none of the others do, they’re just too big. This is harder than it looks and I’m afraid this thread has only served to remind me how good Rolex are at the sensibly priced ‘one watch’ and how few decent alternatives there are - sorry! I’d like to see some suggestion that prove this wrong.
Wouldn't be a Rolex, anyway, it would be a Sinn 203 Arktis.
Not the most expensive, most complex, most prestigious, best known, etc, etc, etc, but it suits me on every front.
I own about 40 watches but I could live with just this one.

Sinn EZM2 Hydro. By far the sturdiest watch around.
Zenith el primero chronomaster
Since its the only watch I owned for 15+ years, Breitling Chronomat gets it by default.
AP RO if I could break the £10k rule.
Breguet classique
Hmmm
Probably Patek Nautilus, as it's now one of my favourite watches, and possibly about the most valuable in used prices out of my current stash.
Alternatively I'd be happy with any one of my Omega Seamaster 300m's or Tudor BB Harrods.
I think for me as an only watch it would have to a watch on a bracelet, apart from that I'm not that fussed though, as I like them all.
It's just a matter of time...
If it needed to be something I don’t already own, then I’d probably say a Blancpain Fifty Fathoms.
Simon
Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore full diamond pave.
Because it's not Rolex so why the eff not.
I would agree with Simon, and apologise to him for the NATO.
