Have luxury watch prices evened out throughout the world?

Just wondered what thoughts were on this, it doesn't seem that long ago where people would make special flights to buy a luxury watch (Rolex, JLC, Grand Seiko, Blancpain etc) in a different country as they were that much cheaper, or it would be mentioned that certain Caribbean islands and far off Eastern destinations offered the best deals.

With the pound weakening, import duty and VAT payable on all incoming's along with other currency fluctuations and grey dealers is there no "cheap" places anymore to buy a watch?

I still find the US can be cheap on eBay. I picked up the below for £2.3k with shipping and duty last month, which isn't the deal of the century but think I'd be hard pressed to find a 1603 of this quality for that here in the UK.
    Look at those lume plots!

My friend always buys watches when working near Andorra as there is no tax.

I advise you to consult your lawyer before answering this

It seems to me that watch prices have evened out due to the online international marketplace. The majority of prices now are either reasonable or overpriced.

No. With global blue duty free etc theres a 17-19% discount in several places in Europe, add to that some weak currencies and its nearly half price for some.

Depends where in the world you're from and where you buy.

I was in Frankfurt airport 3 weeks ago looking at the moonwatch. It was €5400.
In Munchen airport week ago, it was €4600.

It depends on the pricing model used by the brand. Rolex aim to match tax inclusive prices globally, this means the buyer can go to a country with high VAT such as the UK and get a great deal when they claim back tax. Even if the buyer declares the item when importing, the total price is much less as their local tax rate is lower than where they bought the item.

Other brands such as AP match up pre tax prices globally, and then the final price varies depending on local tax. In this scenario the international traveller has no reason to buy overseas as when he imports the watch, the tax at import would make it the same as the price he pays locally anyway.

Of course if you don’t pay tax when importing then lots of things can be cheaper, but that’s just as a result of breaking the law, not a discrepancy in the pricing model.
