    Getting rid/preventing moss

We have some walls in the garden that I'd like to paint but first I need to get rid of the moss that's growing on them.

The walls are rendered (the norm for west of Scotland). Jet washing is blasting loads of the stones off so ideally looking for a chemical solution that actually works.

    Any previous experience or recommendations?

Look for Armillatox or a replacement.

They dont make Armillatox any more thanks to the Eu reguation procedures but if you are tucked away up there you may find some old stock in a chandlers store.

Poly cell also do a paint prep mould remover - that might work

I think a bleach solution works but I stick to a patio/ driveway cleaner which also kills moss - just spray and leave, no scrubbing needed. Takes a couple of days but removes moss and any algae....I use it on bottom of fence too

I’ve had good results with Wet & Forget on our paths, driveway and fences and according to their blurb it works on moss.

    +1.
Used this stuff for ground Moss earlier this year
Took a few days for the moss to die back and then brushed away.

Those were moss in lawns, to be fair; the OP has mossy walls.

A pretty weak solution of Jeyes fluid will do the trick. Kills moss in days. Obviously the dead moss is still there but, if you get a few dry days, you should be able to get it off with a stiff brush without damaging the render.

Render? Same as harling? For moss I use strong thick bleach mixed in boiling water applied with a brush, can be washed away with a hose if you feel the need after a few days.

I always use ‘patio magic’ - spray on, wait 3 or 4 days, goes brown then magically disappears - did my drive, sides of the house and front garden wall this afternoon, won’t do it again until next spring - I think it creates a layer of chemical the moss and algae doesn’t like

Costco sell a product for killing off lichens from block paving. It’s cheap also.

Does anyone know anything about the patio sealing products out there - are they any good for prevention once you've got rid of the moss etc.?

I'll be interested to hear! I usually give my patio a spray with very dilute Jeyes at the beginning and end of the year.. Stinks (carbolic?) for a day or two but works and does have some lasting effect but the lichen (or whatever it is) invariably comes back so repeat applications required.
