Was walking the dog the other day and stopped off at the local for a quick pint. Sat across from me were a couple of old guys having a quiet beer. One says to me, "that's a moon watch you are wearing there". Impressed with his WISdom I glance over to see what he is wearing. It seems he was quite a collector in the old days. He was wearing his from new Rolex GMT. I couldn't quite identify it at first as the blue and red on the bezel had totally faded. It was almost completely silver. He told me he paid £200 for it!!!! Shocked, I mentioned he should get it insured if he hadn't, which.....he hadn't but said "if it gets stolen so be it" he replied :(
He then tells me he also has another.....I couldn't believe it......bought from a diver.....yes, yes....who worked for COMEX, only a DRSD, my holy grail! He paid a whopping £300 for that one and again it just sits in a drawer uninsured :(
I so wish he had been wearing the comex, but it was so interesting talking to him. Knocking on for 80 years old and able to spot a speedmaster from 10 feet away and owning 2 absolutely amazing watches himself. Sorry no photos but that may have seemed a bit strange to the old boy especially as I was so intruiged as to what else he has in his drawer at home.
I love that kind of story - especially when the old guy had obviously worn the watch for years and used it well as opposed to it being treated gently and pampered.
Nice chat to go with your pint.
That does make me feel quite sad I hate the idea of a generation without family. I also wonder how many of that generation have these watches worn and well used with no idea of the value, which to me is a great thing as they are used as they was intended to be. But how many of these will be thrown out without a thought if people are not WIS?
I am doing too much thinking this Sunday morning, as it has made me wonder what are the next batch of watches unloved now, or such that will be collected in future.

It's great when that happens. Happened to me about two years ago, a guy at the bar was wearing an Ed White. I had a chat with him and it turned out that he had a jewellery shop and someone brought it in. He claimed he didn't know what model it was other than a Speedmaster - yes, right and I bet he paid bugger all for it 👍
Last year I visited Amman, Jordan.
We were in a nice Coffee place when I noticed this elderly gentleman wearing a flightmaster.
I approached him and asked about his watch. Turns out he used to be a pilot and traded in his Rolex GMT master to get the flight master when it came out. He was adamant that it was a much better, more functional pilot’s watch.
He even obliged when I asked to take a picture of it!

Is there such a beast - as a "COMEX Double Red"?
I thought the COMEX was all white legend
Comex DRSD exists and I have held it - but no logo on its dial.
Separately, some Comex divers also had their own, personal-purchase DRSDs. I have such a watch and I suspect that this is also what we are reading about here.
