Looking for recommendations for first Tag Heuer (secondhand)

Apologies if this has been asked before, but there is so much information on this forum and I’m a complete noob...

My 14 year old son would like to buy his first Tag and is willing to spend up to around £300 from his paper round savings. Obviously looking at second hand.

Any advice on a good entry model for him? Something likely to be reliable, but affordable.

Or, is this a pipe dream at the moment and, perhaps, he should consider another brand?

    Thanks!

My first thoughts are a classic 2000 quartz from the nineties up to around about 2005 (so possible birth year watch).

There’s lots of them about, they have a robust, decent quality, ETA movement (before TH started putting lower quality quartz movements in) and are starting to appreciate in value.

This is a variation that’s quite nice.

Here’s a standard one that should be around his budget.

That blue one is very nice. I could have great fun tarting up that bracelet back to minty.

I had the white dial/black bezel version a few years ago. It was s lovely watch but wore a little small for me so it had to go.

It’s worth remembering though, that even the “full size” models are only 38mm so slightly small by today’s standards.

It may be worth sending dlgriff a pm as he may have something suitable.

The classic modern tag chrono. A very well made and tasteful watch. I just refurbed the bracelet on mine. But surely well above the op's budget? Never see these for under £900 on bracelet?

    Great starter Watches.
I like a lot of the Tag range (old and new). At £300 you shouldn’t go too far wrong.

With 6.75" wrists, 38mm is Def in my 'goldilocks zone'.

The older 1980s-1990s ones are nicer IMHO, more interesting than newer models and are starting to increase in value. He won’t find a 1000 series watch for that money nowadays but a 1500 series or as suggested by another poster a 2000 series should be achievable on eBay.

    The midsize is 36mm.

Just in case you’re not familiar with the model codes, it was quite simple back then.

    Eg WK1111

W or C denotes watch or chronograph

    K is model designation (K=2000, L=kirium, V=Carrera etc)

First 1 denotes quartz, 2 auto, 5 chronometer etc

Second 1 denotes men’s size (2=midsize, 3= ladies). They’ve since added 0 and A (at least) for larger watches

Third 1 denotes stainless steel (I can’t remember the others (TT, gold etc)

The last 1 denotes dial colour (usually 0 and 1 for black/white but they did seem to be all over the place depending on model)

On the three letter models, I think they just ran out of letters but it’s basically the same but with a A in the middle.

    Hope someone finds this useful.

A couple more examples of the watches I’ve owned

    CL1111 kirium chrono Quartz
CL111A kirium F1 (ana digi) quartz
    CV2010 Carrera chrono 41mm auto
    CV2A10 Carrera chrono 43mm auto
    CR5111 Monza calibre36 chronometer
    CT511A/B Link calibre 36 (white/Black dials)

Agreed; there’s also the 4000 and 6000 models but they’re a bit rarer and the 6000 brackets are fragile yet hugely expensive.

    Thanks for the tips!

The blue one is interesting... would you say that’s typical condition for something of that age and price? The standard one looks like it has less wear.

Would you say it’s okay to buy from eBay? Or, perhaps, from folks on here?

Guy has v high ratings on eBay. I'd probably offer £250 and maybe agree on £280ish.

I have an old 1000 which I love and would recommend one if the price is right.

For me there's only one choice , the WK1110 "full size" quartz 2000 series and you should be able to get one within budget.

Had mine since 1997 and my first expensive watch and everyone wore Tag's back then.

Still love this watch , super accurate and still looks great after all these years imho.

    Cheers
    Neil

I bought a fantastic Carrera Goodwood Festival of speed watch from Bicester Village and saved around 1K off list. Stunning watch 1 of 250. I can highly recommend calling Bicester for sure.

I’d definitely recommend a 2000 Tag, but would try possibly try and find an automatic - they go for around the same money but are rarer so would definitely put him on the road to WIS-dom. eBay is a good hunting ground, but also try your highstreet secondhand stores as they seem to turn up frequently in pawnbrokers.

This thread and the lovely spring weather has prompted me to dust off this vintage piece- am really enjoying it today.

There's a Tag Heuer 1000 for 350£ on eBay, might worth a look.

I'm looking for a pre Tag 1000, but those are a bit more difficult to come by.

Yours any my taste in watches still seems to match well Adrian. I need to dust mine off too as they are a cracking watch.

I think I paid considerably more than £300 mind you.

What about the 2000 multigraph that’s just been posted on SC?
