    Bike stolen today.

Had my boardman Pro mtb stolen today while on hols
In blackpool with my son. Well pissed off
We padlocked both our bikes to a railing right on the sea front near the tower
While we popped into Harry ramsdens to get fish and chips
Tops 10min. When we can’t out mine as gone and my sons left there the chain
Bolt cropped in half on the floor. Can’t believe it
Told the police. We had been here for an hour before it happened
Put a right downer on the 2 day break.

Absolutely gutted for you. Scum of the earth.

Not what you want to here right now, but the lesson is you can’t outrun a bear, but it doesn’t matter as long as you can outrun the competition, i.e . invest in the best lock you can and the scum move on.

I have a Abus Granit 540, and yes if the thief is persistent enough he’ll eventually break it (it’ll take an angle grinder), but odds are they’ll just move on to the next bike.

Good advice. The copper suggested a d lock type
Mine was decent I’ve had it years

About 5 years ago I went on a fitness craze and started to cycle everywhere within a 10 mile radius of home. One day I cycled into town and I run a Pashley Paramount which has a basket over the rear wheel. I parked the bike and secured it to a cycle rack with a really heavy chain and padlock. When I returned to the bike, I realised to my annoyance that the padlock key had fallen out of a hole in my jacket pocket, so I was stuck in town.

I knew that I was not far from a branch of Screwfix and walked down and purchased the biggest bolt cutters they sold. I then walked back to the bike in broad daylight, cut through the chain, bundled it all into the basket and cycled off. All this was in the middle of town with hundreds of people walking around.

No one said anything or did anything and I was back home 30 minutes later. It just shows how easy it is to pinch a bicycle now a days.

My Orange Evo 2 got robbed out of my shed some years ago. Got up in the morning and could see the tyre marks in the dew.

The insurance company paid up without any hassle. A couple of weeks later i called in WH Smiths for a mountain bike mag and in the 5 minutes i was in there some git had pinched the replacement Orange.

Again the insurance paid out but I'd had enough of dissappearing Orange MTBs so i got a Rock Lobster and bought a D lock, thick chain lock and other bits.

As has been stated if thieves are determined enough they'll get it but best to not to make it too easy.

I had a look in cash converters and loot (i hadnt heard of ebay) for my bikes but had no luck.

Hope the op gets a decent replacement and is back on 2 wheels soon.

Sorry to hear this. I think that I've been lucky, as I've now had my bicycle for 39 years. Perhaps no one is interested in old road bikes.

    Best wishes,
    Bob

Our daughters boyfriend had the handlebars nicked off his new bike. To get them though, they just unbolted them but cut through both gear cables and hydraulic brake pipes. This was in broad daylight and the bike was chained up less than 100 yards from New Scotland Yard.

Unless you're prepared to spend three figures on a lock then any bike of value is in danger. The D type can often be picked quicker than using a key, literally. But there are good ones. https://youtu.be/MhwvRQpYquU
Cable locks can be cut easily. 10mm boron steel chain locks are very hard to cut because thieves find it hard to get a proper grip on them while they dry.

If there's one thing in life that you remember its getting your bike nicked. Mine was 30 years ago and I can recall the sinking feeling like it was yesterday. Gutted for you.

Little tip for You.If You have a distinctive bike stolen in Your home town mention it to Your postman. I know a guy did this and one day the postman spotted it outside some scroats flat.

Had a thought. Wonder if I can claim on my holiday
Insurance ? Got it with the nationwide as I bank with them
Had it years. Never claimed yet. Gonna give them a call as
    Essentially I’m on holiday.

I don't see why not or what about house insurance?
I claimed on mine when it was stolen outside WH Smiths.

I once had a bike stolen from the balcony outside my front door! I'm on the first floor. I heard the wee scrotes but thought it was something else.

The police told me to use two quality D-bolts, one front one back and to fill them as much possible with wheel, frame and whatever you're clamping to, set them as low as possible. This gives less purchase for cutters and makes it more difficult for angle grinders.

Good luck to the OP with the insurance.

Bikes being stolen/cars paying you no attention puts me right off cycling I’m afraid. Once I’ve bought a good lock, heavy chain and a decent helmet and high-viz it all seems too much faff tbh. I now walk short to medium journeys and drive the rest. I just can’t relax no matter how securely a bike is locked up so what’s the point?
