    Madrid Suggestions *all done*

    Chaps,

Always value suggestions and experiences and cracking info flagged up for the Krakow trip earlier in the year.

So a few days in the spring to check the city out with food high in the agenda. Looked back on threads from a few years back but any useful trip info would be great.

    Many thanks

Rowing a boat around the park, plaza mayor is nice if you avoid the people dressed as superheroes touring for photos, the kings palace, cathedral thingy, oh and I did the tour at the bernabeau which was great.. and saw muse in athleticos stadium the Vincente Calderon... I really like Madrid it’s got a lot of character just don’t go expecting it to be anything like as pretty architecturally as Barcelona because it isn’t

The Prado's not bad. I'm a complete philistine when it comes to art but the Mrs. insists on dragging me round these places. The Prado's one of the better ones I've been forced into..

    Cheers,

I love Madrid, a great city. I actually prefer it to Barcelona personally.

I've been 3 times all for different reasons. Work, Footy trip and stag do. All 3 were great. Been to see Real twice, love that ground. Gutted I never got to Atleti's old ground.

The Palace is lovely. There's many great bars and restaurants and as you'd expect, some great Tapas

    Prado not bad?
You also have the acceptable Reina Sofia
    All museums close on Tuesdays.

If you fancy an unusual way to see a part of town, try a guided segway ride

If you’ve never seen it, flamenco is a must. You could do worse than Cardamomo. It is also in a part of Madrid that lends itself to nice walks.

In the same street (calle de echegaray )an absolute must, La Venencia: this is where you will sample great sherries with a few slices of Salchichón and Jamón (but it won’t be de Bellota).

    Much of Madrid is walkable.

Do a Google search for watches and food in the Barrio Salamanca - a posh part of the city away from the tourist bits.

Rest your feet in El Retiro.

And, if you must go to an art gallery, the Thyssen-Bornemisza, next to El Retiro, is excellent and quieter than the Prado.

If the weather's reasonable, head out to the Casa de Campo. You can have a very nice walk and then have a meal either down by the lake (will be crowded in good weather at the weekend) or up at the cable car station (which is more of a canteen but the food used to be perfectly decent) and has great views. If you visit the Templo de Debod you can catch the cable car to the Casa de Campo from nearby.

La Taberna de Ángel Sierra for a well preserved old bar serving vermouth in the heart of Chueca is a bit of a classic. Sunday lunchtime used to be a popular time to go.

Go here any time of the day but especially in the evening to eat yourself to death with a huge variety of snacks.

I worked in Madrid for a period about 4 years ago and used to go there 2-3 times a week.
It is in the centre and easy to get to and good value.
I found it perfectly safe to walk to.

I knew I was forgetting something essential. Mercado San Miguel is a must.

Well I am certainly in the camp of preferring Madrid to Barcelona.

We had an excellent four days with a trip to Toledo added in and could not recommend them both enough.

We had the most loveliest apartment on Gran Via with a roof terrace and plunge pool on the roof, views were stunning.

many thanks again for suggestions and assistance.

Oooh looks as if you had a fab time! I was there in January (my second trip) and simply gorged on amazing food for 3 days. We had a local friend which was incredibly handy and discovered some real gems.

For the prices I think one of the best foodie cities in Europe. Brilliant!

We stayed in a hotel on Grande Via too, I could not believe how busy the street was regardless of the time of day/night, and how many taxis were on the go, only place I’ve been nervous in the back of a taxi weaving in and out of the traffic, still, we’ll go again. Glad you liked the place.
