I posted this on another forum...

Pic taken few years ago before I bought the two pams I posted earlier

In my region (Asia),pam still remains popular for those who still cannot afford the likes of AP ROO or steel Rolex...personally I do enjoy wearing pam more than the watches by those two brands

Personally I enjoy wearing mine as they’re different, bold, simple yet still refined...

This `04 111 must be considered almost vintage compared to the rest of the fayre on this thread.
Worn on one of Micah`s stinkin` old Mausers - knarly, rugged, proper.

One of the things I like about panerais,if your out and another paneristi spots what your wearing they’ll approach you and comment on your watch.
It’s like having an old mini or beetle and seeing another, headlights start flashing straight away.
I’m not sure you get the same response when your wearing something else .

I got my 111 in 2009 - gosh 10 years now! Was my first 'proper' high end watch. Currently have a 111 and 190. Both in the safe and need to come out. The 190 also needs a service (pricey....).

Had a 183 (sold to get a 190, I kinda miss the slim profile, though the 190 is a much better watch) and a 233 (fabulous, but didn't sit on my wrist well at all).

Some great Panerais here, though I seem to very much prefer the majority of PAMs prior to the mass in-house charge. Keep it up!

Some of mine from years gone by and 2 from the present...

Started for me with a 086.

    Then a 176 followed.

    Then a 312.

Then a 190, which was a bad move as i quickly realised why i couldn't get on with the 312.

It was 312's lack of gold hands so that was moved on for a 351.

Then i traded the lot for the 2 present ones...

    127

    232

And of all that have gone, i only miss one, and it was the one that i took the longest to bond with, but at the end it was tough to let it go and i very nearly didn't.
    So Panerai.

Also loving the smaller Radiomir 512. I think that’s what I’d go to if I changed my 268. Any more 190’s out there?

Very basic question, what's the smallest model available, probably an older one? I really love the look, especially the sandwich dial, but can't get away with the large sizes and bulk.

What references are 42mm or less?

    Thanks

By 2005/6/7 they were an established brand must have for nearly every collector, still a niche brand with limited production and a compact model range. Bring in the economic crash of 2008, some poor decisions from Panerai management both on production levels and increased model ranges, the secondary market was awash with Panerai which just diluted any aura of exclusivity and with that the secondary market prices, which have never recovered.

For Panerai like many brands, once you fall off the mantle it seems you never again reach that level again especially with a saturated marketplace. I feel that have settled in the mid terrace level within the watch market, not quite Rolex but above Omega and JLC in the desirability stakes. They are creating some very attractive models but with a pricing strategy that makes me think that they feel that they are a bigger player than they actually are, which just leads to piles of unwanted stock and the perception of a brand that no one is that bothered about.

    Insightful piece.

However I think the main drop off for the brand was the Brooklyn bridge disaster (2010?) when PAM owners found very cheap unworked movements inside their expensive watches. In fact the same type of thing that would be found in fake Pams.

Many didn't believe it at first...

I do like the original sandwich dial vintage types, but it takes a lot to live something like that down.

    Neil.

Brooklyn Bridge was but one watch that no one I know ever brought. They still remain a iconic brand and a great alternative to the ‘safe’ (read boring) options most chose.
Panerai journey has been up and down. Plucked from obscurity and brought out by major corporation that catapulted them into the upper echelons long before they were ready to be there they did well considering.
But here we are today seeing a nice steady and reliable Release from them each year and many returning to those classic and timeless pieces plus collectors scrambling to find some of the earlier Classics that have that charm and character.
Add to this the move to in-house across the board and smaller models that cater for those who prefer a slender watch and if nothing else they have listened to their critics and acted Upon that.

    I’d missed this thread!

Really bad pics of some of mine.

    190

    590

    232

    233

And by no means least the 372

I do regret selling my 243 and would love another as i am missing a Sub. However top of that Sub list would be a 64, so Howard please give me a shout if you ever have a want to move the 64 on!!!

How do you find the 687 wears? I’m thinking about putting my 42mm Exp2 on SC to help fund one. It’s the 47mm that is stopping me at minute.

    Some lovely examples here

Do have a hankering for one of the submersibles

My 118 stopped working, so currently with Panerai, thankfully just needs a service to sort it out, and should be back in another 4 weeks, been away for 2 weeks

    Cheers

I’ve owned quite a few references over the years but the only one that remains in the collection is my 90. It was my first ‘proper’ watch, and a gift from my wife, making it a keeper. A little different from other PAM90s in that I’ve had it engraved and a non-cyclops crystal fitted. I must dig it out soon.

I agree. I think its is an often misunderstood brand, which hasnt been helped by poor management and over zealous marketing by Richemont. But if you take their models, I find many of their movements are quite solid, like for example the P.9010 has a double bridge anchor, 28800 BPH, 72HR PR, Hacking, Quick Hour. Its honestly a solid movement, or even their hand wound ones like the P2002. This coupled with a design that has in many ways stood the test of time, as its not a brand new design, it was actually the design of the tools used in the military so there is some heritage there too.

I have fairly chunky wrists at 7.75 ish, but it was my first 47mm & have found it not to be a problem at all. Sits surprisingly well, it's quite slim which helps & doesn't feel too much at all (although that picture possibly isn't the best). Personally my 44mm 233 feels chunkier but that may relate to the height.
