Rolex Baselworld 2019 teaser. Any thoughts?

    Went live this morning.

My guess is Explorer ll with ceramic bezel? Or perhaps steel Yachtmaster 37/40

The first shot is a Sub surely. Something relatively mundane like new movement in the 114060 :)

Doubt its the Explorer 2 as its not clear there is a GMT hand in the centre stack at the beginning of the video, and the hands looks more like the Submariner Date, YM or GMT. 114060 ruled out also as it says "DATE".

Rumours are of a GMT Coke in white gold.. So this could be it, or the submariner date with upgraded movement.

A couple of people (unconnected to each other) have said that getting an explorer 11 has become harder and one AD told me they’ve (very unusually) had a lot of calls about them and wondered if it’s being discontinued/upgraded, so would make sense.

While I am at it, it is not 'Brietling' but Breitling.

    Thank you

    Sorry, it was just time

BTW, black hands on a black face; don't think so....

We should find out on the 20th (day before) where the Rolex site should have previews of the Baselworld collection

What makes you think they will do that? I don’t recall them ever showing their cards until Basel opens. Unless you count the leaked Explorer II debacle the year the 39mm Explorer was released.

Rolex website says it is unveiling 20th March.

I am holding off on buying my first Rolex to see what is to come.

Are Basel watches in stores soon after ?

Yes, usually a matter of days and often discounted to boost immediate demand for the newly launched models.

    Welcome!

You’re new here, aren’t you? Have a read of some of the Rolex threads. Their business model these days is to launch new watches that everyone wants but make supply so limited that no-one can get hold of them at list price unless they are a regular big spender with their local AD.

Unless you have have unlimited resources, your best bet is to get something pre-owned.

An AD informed me that he expects the Rolex site to show a preview of the new watches on the 20th. It wasn’t clear what time it would be but likely to be early evening GMT. That said I’m new to this forum and I didn’t know about Baselworld until January this year.
Let’s hope this tip proves true

There will be an Explorer II with ceramic bezel. I haven't seen the teaser pics but I do know that watch is coming.

    Black ceramic, or another colour?

That has been the rumour for the last two years.

I hope so because from previous mock up pictures it looks a beauty.

Always liked the mock ups of these. The white dial / black bezel would be good, but the black / black may be quite similar to the GMT, so interesting to see what they do

Just been in an additional who, because of no black GMT recently, speculated it may be going. Something else will replace that so...?

George Bamford bored Rolex into submission.

I doubt it is Explorer II. Explorer model name is written on top of the dial under Oyster perpetual date.

  28. #28
I'm thinking outside the box here and going to say it's a Space-dweller. Perhaps Rolex think it's time to look forwards instead of backwards, Space is where our Explorers are looking, not in plastic filled oceans or the corpse sided mountains.

    Or the Forum Dweller..

  30. #30
I was thinking Explorer II due to the layout of the lettering, however I now think it's likely to be a Sub or another GMT.
Almost all other dials have the name of the watch below "OYSTER PERPETUAL DATE"
Seeing Rolex-58 in the HTML path to the teaser got me thinking along the lines of a Space related model due to NASA forming / re-branding in 1958, but I doubt that's relevant.

On the Rolex page there's a looped video of the watch and at the end something appears to move at speed across the sky.

Agreed I think 'Explorer II' had always been written underneath the crown and 'oyster perpetual date' unless they have moved the writing to below the hand stack. So oyster perpetual date plus mercedes hands probably means GMT, sub-date, sea-dweller or a new model entirely. Based on this teaser anyway. Each year people focus on the one watch that is teased or leaked and think it is the total offering of the show before it has started. Of course there will be other models too.

The current Explorer was released two years before the Explorer II. Thought it would get an upgrade first.

I'm no Rolex aficionado but I'm almost certain the current Explorer II is a Basel 2011 watch and the current Explorer got a refresh (lume, longer hands etc) at Basel 2016.

Correct it was 2011. Was the 2016 a proper upgrade?

No, same case, movement and model number so a face lift only but I can't see them touching it three years later. It still has a more advanced movement than most (all?) the Submariners.

Omega seem to have NASA sewn up but I’m sure Mr Musk wouldn’t say no to some cash for SpaceX from RoleX.

Blacked out hands on a black dial? Rolex have clearly chosen to take leave of their conservative senses.
