Can't say I'm a massive fan of yellow gold but I do think the red bezel works well with it.

I like the hue of the gold here. Doesn't look like it is an LE though I may be mistaken.

50 years ago, mankind took its very first steps onto the surface of the moon. The OMEGA Speedmaster was there, strapped to the wrists of the astronauts, and this year, we’re paying tribute to the mission’s lasting legacy, with the new Apollo 11 50th Anniversary Limited Edition model of 1,014 pieces.

One of the worst-looking Speedies that I have ever seen. Terrible colour scheme.

Was the original version a good seller I wonder.....am sure someone here will know!

Personally a shame we didn't see the 'new'/old 321 in a watch like this.

At the time, in the sixties, chronographs were considered expensive and were not selling at all. It was so much cheaper to buy a three-hander wristwatch AND a separate stop-watch timer that the market for chronographs did not exist. Essentially they were tool watches for the select few, like doctors, pilots, and some racing drivers.

Which explains why Heuer watches were initially sold through specialist racing/timing shops rather than watch shops. And presumably why Siffert was paid commission to sell them to his fellow drivers.

Just like the special run Omega did in 69/70, one of which went to Nixon and each of the astronauts. I nearly bought one in Canada around 2000 for £6k, I hate to think what it would be worth now.

Exactly. That was the original moon landing celebration model, this is a recreation of it with some modern touches.

I think it's a superb idea but not for everyone, and it's reflected in the limited number of 1,014 pieces and a Euro 30k price tag.

Maybe Omega decided that this time they should be the ones making all the money on a new limited edition Speedy?

I hate to be a killjoy and know lots of other people will disagree but for me the only Speedy Pros worthy having are pre-moon. Much like Morgans, anything after that is just a replica of itself.

I have the same with moon-2-mars version. The only Speedmaster discounted in AD almost 10 years ago.
Saw, checked and gave up - mainly because of ugly subdials. It was for less than 1000£, new, boxed...

Has anyone else got their name down for one of these? I have to say, having seen the Rolex 2019 newbies announced earlier today - as underwhelming as they are - I am glad to have something different in the pipeline.

My AD has got an allocation and has put it aside for me I understand as he thinks I may love it, I really like YG watches and have not purchased Omega before so definitely interested. Seems a high price tag though, but it’s a beautiful watch, looking forward to seeing it in person.

And the price is now even higher, £26,480 :( according to Regent Street.

There it is again, that Dunhill cigarette packet colour scheme, which makes it a trend that only Omega seem to know about...

    One of these...

I am partial to a beautiful bright burgundy bezel though.

I'm sure this is only the opening salvo in a 50th anniversary LE series. If they can shift these they can shift anything.

A lot of comments regards the high pricing of this Speedmaster but when compared to a gold Rolex daytona £28500 approx or the £60K+ that Audemars ask for an offshore in gold, the Omega pricing seems comparable to the current market RRP.

We rarely see all gold speedmasters produced and that is maybe why the pricing is making a few watch lovers shake their head when we are so used to all steel models prices.

The one stand out on this piece is the bracelet, would be interested to see if this is to be replicated on the steel moonwatch.

I like it, looks like a good copy of the original and that's no bad thing. Price will be silly, but at least it's more praiseworthy than yet another steel derivative........a theme that they've done to death to say the least!

I think the red bezel and black markers works, but I thought that when I saw pics of the original. One of the classiest things Omega have done for a long time.

Don't get the choice of movement...why not the "new" 321? The mix of co-axial and Cam switching seems at odds technology wise.

That is Omega retro-fitting Co-axial escapement into the normal moonwatch movement, the 1861, hence 3861.
    Interesting piece of technology grafting.

    The original BA145.022 used an 861, that's why a 321 wasn't used.

    I absolutely LOVE that model!

It is No 2 on my alltime wish list, just after the 'Grail'...

As always would prefer an original given to an Astronaut by Nixon....or so ;-)

    Cheers,
    Serge

    That's a tough ask.
Will this do? LE of 300 345.0082
Signed by Jim Lovell of Apollo 13

  42. #42
Fair enough. But I'm guessing it didn't have a coaxial escapement! Wonder if they will put this movement into more regular speedies to improve the daily rate?

There's a steel anniversary version of the Moonwatch on the way - 6969 pieces and it'll have some yellow gold highlights making it slightly two-tone.

Like it or not, is this not the ideal "flip" or "investment" watch...?
With such limited numbers, and the whole anniversary thingy is it not a sure thing for prices to rise...

not for me, but if i thought i could make 5K off it (and had 25k lying around)... well.....

Doubt it. Hell of a sunk cost, limited demand for YG when you can have TT or Rose gold in other brands for less cash. And, the Speedy has been milked to annihilation...
