    PRS-82 - Movements query

If you had the opportunity to buy one with the 2783 movement or the 2824 movement which would you prefer? Given that the 2783 movements used were NOS, won’t there potentially be an issue with obtaining replacement parts? Which is likely to be more accurate?

Thanks in advance for your observations.

If two watches in identical condition were offered I’d take the 2824 with no hesitation.

Thanks, Paul. Is that due to availability of parts (or lack of)/ease of maintenance for the earlier movement?

Parts availability could be an issue for all ETA movements in the not too distant future owing to Swatch Groups stupid policy on supply. However, parts for the older ETA movements are obsolete rather than restricted, which causes more problems. The 2824 is far better seved for parts and that’ll continue.

The 2824 is a higher beat movement so theoretically it’s better. However, in use the differences are unlikely to be significant.

Other than the fact that it mirrors the original more accurately (warm feeling territory in my parlance)I can’t think of a reason to choose a 2789 over a 2824 unless you tumble across a really mint example.

I bought mine when it first came out so it has the 2783.

If I was buying it now and had the choice between the 2 I would buy the 2783.

    The reasons being:

    1) I have other watches which use the 2824 - so it's nice to have a different movement;

    2) The slower beat 'chug' is really quite affectionate

    3) Fingers crossed parts won't be a problem

I asked because I’ve spotted one with the 2783 movement. It looks to be pretty much unworn. It’s a watch that I’ve been looking at for quite a while now.

    I wouldn't sell mine - its a fantastic watch.

If it looks in good condition and is a sensible price go for it - I'm sure you won't regret it 👍

The one I’ve seen is £375. It’s a full set from 2013. Either buy that one or put up an extra £50 for the current model with two year warranty. I’ll need to mull it over.

To be honest- I’d pay the £50 more and get new if I were you.

That’s what I’m thinking. £375 for the earlier model seems a bit steep to me. But I also think there’s not much else out there to compete with the current model at £425.

What movement did the original diver have in 1982?

    Hi SeaB.

Please let me know if you decide to pass on the PRS-82 with the ETA 2783.

    Thanks.

I sold mine a couple of years ago! It was the one with the old movement.
I have since regretted selling it so I am also in the market for one!
If I don't find one soon I will go with a new one.
    Such a beautiful watch!

There is one on eBay at the moment with the original movement

    £375 is pretty reasonable

Thanks for this. Unfortunately he doesn't seem to post internationally. Also, when I tried to contact him, it wasn't possible.

Then if one tries to see items for sale, it appears there are none.

    Weird

    Thank you though! :-)

    No problem at all

Not responding to contact is sometimes a worrying sign

I’m sure one will come up for you

They are super watches and I’m very lucky to own 003 from the first batch

    All the best

I bought mine used and it came with a rubber tropic strap and the blue stock nato strap. I'm wearing it on a admiralty gray nato strap from Phoenix as shown in the picture.

It is an 89 (17 Q) and wears superbly, i am hardly aware I have it on my wrist.

That PRS14 is a cracker, one day I hope.

I don't think that I have ever seen one for sale before so have no idea as to the 'going rate'.

With the 18A I am sure it is a great watch but as the original issue was quartz I am looking out for an Eddie first issue Q when funds allow.
