I have been offered a Brietling Superocean Heritage. Ref A1732136.BA61.131S. I know this is the old model with the eta movement. Price yesterday was €2800ish which is around £2400. Would prob be able to get lower as this was his 1st money off offer.
Thoughts please on price???
Also would I pay VAT on return to the UK??

Have you tried searching the internet for prices on these? Took me about 20 secs to find out that the price is quite good if it's brand new.
And Tenerife is a Spanish island so no VAT to pay on return to the UK.
Someone who lies about the little things will lie about the big things too.
Sorry for the disinformation. I'd always thought it was part of the Customs Union.
Does it only come on the rubber - no mesh? I would have said price was okay (ish) but without the mesh and with vat on top - not so nice. Is he ever on Spanish mainland - he could post from there?
There will be Border Force (not customs) Officers all over Canary Island flights into UK airports due to them not being part of the EU for tax purposes.
People often fall foul when bringing back a suitcase full of duty free fags or baccy.

Exactly.
But that’s what they’ll be looking for; Not someone with a new Breitling.....however, if they search your bags looking for non duty paid excise goods and happen to stumble across the box / paperwork for the watch and you happen to have walked down the Green (nothing to declare) Channel, then they’ll take it off you.

It's not a sport.
It's criminal tax evasion.

More like civil tax evasion. You’re not going to be arrested or investigated by HMRC for the evasion of duty on one suitcase of cigarettes or one Breitling from the Canary Islands.
No prison. But you will lose your goods and may be liable for a penalty.

Thankyou all for the advice. Will be leaving the watch where it is.

This for info:
T1. Intentional evasion of VAT is an offence under section 72(1) of the Value Added Tax Act. Maximum penalty is level 5 or 6 months imprisonment however at Crown Court 7 years imprisonment and unlimited fine. VAT evasion can be investigated under civil evasion regime or under criminal prosecution.
The key part to my post was “one suitcase of cigarettes or one Breitling”

Not sure I ever said it was a sport. Although it is a bit like getting paid to play hide and seek for those uniformed BF officers. I merely explained what happens to passengers on a daily basis in the green channels of airports and sea ports all over this land.
Can the fraudulent evasion of VAT / excise duty result in prison? Yes. Would it on the levels of VAT or duty applicable in this scenario? No.

Lots of experience yes.
Walking down the green channel is making a declaration - you have nothing to declare.
You can’t then retrospectively declare your goods if you get caught and just pay the duty due as you’ve tried evading it in the first place.
For example: if the duty free allowance is 250g of hand rolling tobacco and you’re stopped in the green channel with 20kg of Golden Virginia from Gran Canaria, it’s an absolute offence. There’s no appeal, there’s no ‘sorry I didn’t realise I’ll pay the duty’ and there’s no keeping your allowance of 250g.
Worth noting that the duty rate on tobacco is around £211.00 per kg currently so not sure it’d be worth paying anyway.
Last time I checked the duty free allowance on other goods (ie gifts / electricals / a watch) was £390.00
If whatever you’ve purchased is worth over £390 then you pay the duty and / or tax on the full amount, not just the amount over the allowance.
(It’s lower if you’re in a private aircraft or boat)
