Suggestions please - Chronograph for a present

    Hi,

    My godson is 21 shorty.

I’ve been asked to advise on a watch present.

He want a chronograph, something like a speedy I guess, and the budget is approximately £600.

Not bothered quartz v mechanical, would go for good second hand with B&P.

I like the look of Dan Henry but have not experienced them.

    Any suggestions?

    Many thanks, Mark

    Certina Precidrive Chrono?

Currently 15% off here which takes it to £531...

    https://www.hsjohnson.com/watches-c1...yABEgKFBfD_BwE

Or £488 for the flyback Chrono (rrp £695) using the 15% off code along with the already 17% off...

    Aerotimer is great.

If he likes the Speedy Pro, he might like the Bulova Moonwatch too.

In that price range I personally think the A-13A is almost unbeatable. New it is slightly above budget, used below.

Not sure if it's expensive enough but I'm a bit of a Seiko nut

Or for similar money, this from citizen

Have a look at Certina or Victorinox, quartz & auto 7750 for relatively little money.
Forgot to say 'Eddies' PRS 45 looks super cool & a hard to beat price as mentioned above.

I’ve 3 sons .... 24, 22 and 19 ..... believe me - a 21 year old will not appreciate a WIS brand unknown to him and his pals. TAG F1 is the way to tick this box

Why not go for a Newmark https://www.newmarkwatchcompany.com/index.htm Lots of history with the 6BB

    Or Timefactors PRS-45 http://timefactors.com/prs45.htm

    Both are great watches

How about an issued Seiko 7T27-7A20 RAF Gen 2. Should be possible to find a decent one within budget.

If you could find one from 1998 it would be a birth-year watch too.

Hamilton Jazzmaster Seaview Chrono Quartz. In my opinion go new with bracelet, recognisable name and heritage, swiss made, quartz.

This, but a new Tag may be a bit pricey?

I would avoid second hand. Unless he is already a watch anorack.
Second hand may just tell him he is not valued.

Farer make a good looking watch.

In case your godson would like a chronograph because he feels he might use it, a 30-minute chronograph might not be enough to satisfy. TAG makes a few (a rather tasteful Formula 1 and an Aquaracer) with the rebranded Ronda 5040.D movement which is accurate down to a tenth of a second but the 1/10th subdial also doubles as a 10-hour totaliser.

If he is not into wathes I d suggest a quartz. Bulova Moonwatch if you like the Speedy or maybe Bulova Accutron II like in photos. Certina is also great in terms value for the money. Definetely some great options with Citizen eco-drive skyhawk or any other chrono. For that money you can buy a 5yrs warranty Citizen with sapphire...

I think this is a really good suggestion. A brand that can be recognised and had some of the looks of the Speedy. At 20 years old I probably would not have wanted a pre-owned watch myself(certainly without choosing it), how things change as we get older hey.

That was my first thought. Tag f1. A boxed, used one will be sub £500 typically. I bought a mint f1 for 320 and a mint Aquaracer for 350. You could even send it off to one of our forum experts for a fresh battery and seal and case rebrush within budget.

Well under budget but there's a few Citizen Ecodrive chronograph models, this one caught my eye in the Goldsmith sales, but there's other models worth a look at.

    Thanks for all the advice.

I think the point about he is a 20 year old lad, not a middle aged WIS is relevant!

I have recommended a Bulova moon watch or a Tag F1 if budget will stretch or second hand is acceptable.

I additionally suggested Dan Henry he likes the look of these.

    Thanks again. Mark

Just make sure it is waterproof enough to deal with random events which somehow seem more frequent in your 20s......

If it’s anything like my 20’s I think a G-Shock might be needed!

What about a Bulova Moon watch or a Strela Kosmodrome?

  28. #28
Another vote for the Bulova Lunar Pilot. You will have the choice of a steel one with either a bracelet or leather strap of a black finished one on the leather NATO type. You could test the water and see what sort of thing he is drawn to without giving the game away.

If he likes the classic look (ie Dan Henry) I would strongly recommend the Baltic Bi-Compax. Fantastic design and visible mechanical movement with clear caseback. I have bought two second hand as presents for close family non-WIS folk and they have gone down well. I’m on the look out for one myself..

Precista PRS 5. There's one up on the bay at present. No connection to myself. Should be had for well under budget. A perfect chrono size for me.

Another Dan Henry-esque suggestion could be the Kronos Vintage Sport - great quartz movement, great wrist presence (I tried on a different branded version and loved it but couldn't deal with the lack of date), solid endlinks, and possibly screwdown pushers, though I can't remember for sure.
