Today's Guardian - The Art of Watchmaking

Nice little photo feature in today's paper.

    Anyone used them?

So no mention of unicorn dust then 😒

Plenty of immigrant and benefit seeker stories though, I'll bet?

You also ought to warn them that this article won't contribute to their daily ration of Jeremy Corbyn / Labour / EU slagging -they will have to go elsewhere for that!

Some really interesting tailor made and project watches covered on their website too. Restoration limited to pre 1960s watches which goes to show their must be a good demand for their passion/skills which is great to see.

checked out their website ...one of their simpler models starts at £17k ..... wonder who their "typical" customers are

Pity the faces on their watches say London, rather than Birmingham.

Interesting comments about the limited funds available for apprenticeships, and the retirement of watchmakers without anyone to pass their knowledge on to.

    Thanks for posting

Probably a bit like me. I am 55, not bought a watch for a long while, would need something really interesting to separate me from my cash, pre you-tube so not interested in what pretty boys and pop stars are wearing, disinterested in resale values.

I was looking for a three hander around Xmas last year as a present from the missus (first watch buy for a decade). Well crafted and max budget of £20k. There’s really very little out there of interest.

The trinity produce boring mass produced stuff at that price. 1815 would be an option but I already have one. The famous independents are all way above that price level etc...

I really think there’s a big enough niche for a number of this type of firm to prosper in and if they are British so much the better.

Thanks for sharing the link OP.

There was also an article in the NYT about the art of watchmaking, and its potential protection status under the Convention of the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage (I'd probably argue that watchmaking was relatively tangible, but that's being churlish). Watch- and clockmaking is already on The HCA's Red List - https://heritagecrafts.org.uk/clock-and-watch-making/.

Interesting article - and its good to see people like this still exist - although unfortunately their watches are out of my league
