Hardshell Carry on / laptop luggage

Hi, there's probably a thread on this somewhere but searching for luggage or carry on brings up nothing I can find.
So, I'm going to be travelling with the family later this year (our first proper holiday since my son was born as he's now old enough to enjoy a foreign holiday) and am in need of some carry on luggage. Having broken a laptop screen on a previous business trip to France while it was in the overhead locker I'd prefer a hardshell style of bag or backpack with pockets or tie downs for multiple bits of consumer electronics. Googling for hardshell backpack seems to bring up specialist drone or camera cases which don;t really suit. I'm not averse to a more traditional style of rolling case but I've found travelling with a backpack to be far more convenient in the past.
I'd also like to be able to use it as a general laptop case afterwards as my current laptop bag is getting a bit tatty.
Budget? I'd prefer to keep it under the £100 mark so no LV or similar but would be prepared to spend a bit more if it means getting the right tool for the job.
Any suggestions, links to old threads, etc. would be much appreciated.

Have a look at Gate8 luggage - they are not hard-shell, but are carry on for pretty much all airlines, well made and you can un-zip the laptop part to keep that bit under your seat.

Was about to post a similar thread, but may as well tag onto this if that's ok?

Im going to be travelling a bit with work soon, something i've not really done before.

Need a laptop carry on bag. Big as possible within carry on limits as i'll be going for 2/3 nights a time, thinking soft rather than hard case, budget under £50

    Cheers

I'd certainly recommend something with either heavy laptop protection or a hard case. I have a nice soft leather laptop bag with quite thick foam protection on the laptop pocket and still my screen had a lovely crack right across it. I suspect, caused by another passenger ramming their bag into the same overhead locker, on top of or next to mine. I'm going to be flying with 3x ipads, 1 a 12.9 pro so I want substantial protection from that kind of thing.

I'll take a look at gate 8 and see if there is anything that takes my fancy.

Just saw an advert for Gate8 in Private Eye. If there is anything you like the code PE will get you 20% off.

I think you have three options.
    1. Pelicase backpack.
    2. Normal backpack with a pelicase insert
    3. Hard sides suitcase.

Whatever cases you look at, don't forget to factor in the weight.

More and more airlines are limiting cabin baggage to 10 or 7Kg (or even 5Kg), so a case that weighs half of that will seriously limit how much stuff you can actually put in it.

The point about all you luggage limit being the case is a very good one. You could just get a harder case for the laptop in a softer bag. I use an Osprey Farpoint 40 for small trips https://www.ospreyeurope.com/shop/gb_en/farpoint-40-14. People actually use them for full on trips to avoid any hold luggage. It has a padded laptop section. It has carry handles and a shoulder strap so you don’t need to look like a hiker as the rucksacks straps are hidden. Look surprisingly smart but obviously no wheels but then again you can move quicker around an airport and places without dragging a case.

As mentioned the weight is generally prohibitive for hard sided carry on bags, These are normally 2+kg and this eats heavily in to a 7kg luggage limit. I have hard sided cargo cases and these are 5+kg so take up a bit of weight.

I have recently started to work overseas where I am away all week. I use the following.
    https://www.amazon.co.uk/Vango-Unise...vango+nomad+45

this is enough for a few day cloths and a laptop and still within the 7kg limit the airline enforce. The laptop compartment is next to the back padding and your clothes so pretty protected. There are plenty of similar bags that are a lot more expensive but I found this to be sufficient for my travels without being over the top. I also have a cabin max oxford bag, whilst this has some advantages over the Vango, the materials used in the Vango are a much better quality for around £5 more so tend to use this the most. Whilst I think the principle of hard sided sounds good, I think it would be a wrong choice.

Ahhh, to clarify. This would be in addition to hold luggage (We Have some Samsonite Termo Young luggage for that), so weight is not that much of an issue as it would only be holding the expensive electronics necessary to stay entertained on a long haul flight (ipads, kindles, power banks etc.).
