Thread: Is there any recommended Black PVD sport/dive watches around???

Is there any recommended Black PVD sport/dive watches around???

So we're not allowed to wear smart watches or fitness trackers any more in the industry I work in so I'm looking for a nice all black watch to wear.

I've seen one or two with one being a joke to track down in particular but just asking if anyone could recommend something?

    No G-Shocks please, I've seen:
Seiko SRPC49 Turtle, out of stock and unreal prices on eBay.
Hamilton Khaki Field Black, look nice.
    Victorinox Inox Carbon looks nice.
Victorinox Army Maverick Black looks nice.
Brietling Colt Skyracer, Brietling is really pushing the boat out for a day to day watch for me, not to keen on the strap design on it.

Anyone think of any others??? Less than a 1K please, it'll be a daily wearer...

I'll ask what everyone else is wondering, what industry.

    How about a Speedmaster DSOTM?

I know you said no G Shocks but I've just bought an MT-G S1000V-1AER which is a bit different than the usual G Shock and comes in under your budget (might fit the bill):

Black Fortis look amazing on the wrist - those that I have spotted.
I'd expect this to be no different.
I am very drawn to this one even though it breaks a lot of "no"s I normally stick to - no numerals no 12 hour bezel no yellow...

    I've got this

It also comes in PVD with a black dial (white indices and hands) and at about £220 delivered, you could have 4 in your budget.

12 hour bezel is optional. They do 5-55 as well..

I am about to have a Seiko Turtle (Steel) cerakoted to mat black, with mod to a coin-edge bezel and ceramic insert. Not an expensive mod and you can get a bespoke(ish) watch to fit your spec

That sounds interesting. What is the rough cost, particularly for the cerakote?

  23. #23
About £100 I think. Requires crystal and movement out to do properly but end result looks awesome from those I have seen.

And all done by a fellow forum member here - well known for Seiko mods. Look at Tempus Watch Mods on Instagram or Facebook.

I’ll be sending 2 this month - cerakote one, and either polish out an issue, or beadblast if a certain scratch is too deep. If I beadblast, will do bracelet too, add in a signed pvd crown and probably another ceramic bezel.
£60-odd for the beadblast I think.

It’s not a lot of dosh for something interesting and personal.

So potentially you have a turtle that looks like the Seiko black ninja turtle then?
    Is that right?

Sort of - but better. Hand mod, bezel and insert mod part of the plan.... but if you mean it will be black, and there is a black one that Seiko also produce, then yes.
But mine will be less expensive than the original Seiko version, look better, be more fun to have created, feel personal, and be available to me almost immediately.
But apart from that, yes - the same.

I’d personally recommend a CWC SBS, providing you don’t mind wearing natos.

Well I've managed to get a Victorinox Inox Carbon at a very (imo) reasonable price so I've gone for that, appreciate the comments and hopefully this will be the right choice for work lol, dam those pesky H&S people banning smart/fitness watches...

Ha! So did I! I'm guessing you got the last one from Hillier as it was sold out when I went back but managed to find one on ebay from a UK jeweller.

    Haha!

No, Hilliers was sold out when I clicked through also. I found one online in a jewellers in Preston (I think). Last one - was in the window!

I'm a big fan of understated tool watches. I already have the the Citizen 'Mears 2018' which I highly recommend.

I received it today as the jewellers I bought it from shipped Special next day. First impressions are good. Nice and slim, very stealthy face (compared to the Mears with its oversized Arabic numerals it's nice to have a face without numerals).

The finish is black in some light and a sort of gunmetal grey in others. I'd compared it to the Victorinox 'black ice' dive master I used to have in colour. Very different to the Seiko diver I got recently that has a very matt black finish that is black in any light!!

The lume is decent. Greenish which works well with the rest of the watch imho, and the minutes hand lume is blue (never seen different lume colour on a Citizen before).

Seconds hand hits it's markers spot on (I did check this before buying lol - a bit of an OCD thing for me with quartz watches).

The sapphire crystal sits just a little proud of the bezel. No big deal but personally I prefer crystals to be flush or even a little recessed.

The strap I'm not sure about. It looks nice on the watch and is visually interesting with its rubber-cordura mix. The strap is however quite long. I have a 7" wrist and the strap end extends a little further than I'd prefer it to. There's two keepers (one fixed and one not) so it's no biggie, but nevertheless worth mentioning.

Overall I'd say it's about as toolish as I've got. When I first opened the box I must say I was a little underwhelmed, but having worn it for a few hours the sheer simplicity of it is really nice.

I'll post a few wrist shots in a moment..

Thanks for the thoughts and your pics, I feel I need a PVD watch again so will be keeping an eye out for one of these, your images have certainly helped me make my mind up. This will be my first purchase of 2019.

Just to let you know, the force is strong with this one. Sitting on my bedside table this thing just feels more like a piece of equipment than a watch one might buy because it looks nice, if you understand what I mean.

A new level of utilitarian 'toolness' for me :)

Hard to say really, they all have their particular good points, they are all titanium and DLC. It wouldn't be the Promaster SST though.

I think if I had to choose just one to keep it would be the MRG-7500, it has the best fit and finish, though all of them are pretty good value in that respect.

One of the reasons I bought this TAG was because a guy on a ship I worked on in O&G was wearing one on the back deck and it never picked up any cosmetic damage. They are discontinued now but you might pick one up secondhand within your budget

I only currently have one, but it's great. Indestructible, tritium tubes, quartz for convenience, light as a feather, looks brilliant (in my opinion). Plus it was around £200 so you could afford this and 1 or 2 other nice watches with your budget!
