Hadn't seen that, ta. Roger Smith has his own Youtube channel with lots of videos detailing his various methods of making cases, dials and hands etc, using George Daniels' old equipment. Well worth watching if you haven't seen them. Reminds me I'm due a rewatch of them..... again!

He comes across to me as a guy who builds his career on the reputation of George Daniels.
I know an enthusiast who has a lovely George Daniels. He took the trouble to visit Mr Smith on the Isle of Man and wasn’t very impressed.

What didn't impress him, his character or craftsmanship?

I think he felt the guy was selling-himself too much, and that the watches would not be seen, in the longer term, as remotely as great. Still, he could have been wrong. Only history will tell.
As it is, he has to keep the Daniels in a bank , and handles it only with gloves.
    What’s the fun in that?

Is it an actual Daniels watch, or one of the series of "Daniels" watches built by Roger Smith under his supervision right at the end of his life?

I'm glad to see that after a couple of years of your endless second hand rubbishing of Roger Smith you've discarded the factually incorrect nonsense you started off with.

I’ve just had a quick look, using the search facility, and can’t find a single reference by me to Smith in the last fifteen months, at which point I lost interest. Perhaps you can do better.
Why do you get so het-up and personal....people have views, you may not agree with them. So what?

George Daniels was impressed enough and that's good enough for me.

He was inspired by how Daniels did things. I don’t see the harm.

The idea that we should despise someone for faithfully carrying on the traditions they have learnt slowly and carefully from a master seems foolishly decadent. It would no more sensible to hate a mediaeval building for having stood throughout the eighteenth century.

I could listen to Roger Smith talks all day long, and think his watches look marvellous.

    Thanks for this.

Bark and Jack always gives me a slight pain, but Roger Smith is among the world's best watchmakers, along with FP Journe.

I must admit, I do enjoy watching him interviewed. Nice to see a good down-to-earth Northern lad doing so well. His watches leave me stone cold tbh; I can’t see any technical merit in them at all but obviously others have a different view and it is nice to see a success story like his.

I know this is a bit old, but I went to talk Roger Smith was giving locally, and he was great. He talks with a love of the subject and was happy to answer all questions.

If you get the chance to meet him I'm sure you'll be impressed with him.

I have actually met mr. Smith.

He isn't just very knowledgeable, he is a gentleman, who took his time to share knowledge with just a random bunch of watch enthusiasts who shot him an email just before a watch happening in London.

He wasn't selling himself. He was very friendly, enthusiastic about mr. Daniels and the isle of Man (we talked about the TT races as well).

If I had enough disposable funds for one of his creations atm, I would go and get one.

Absolutely this, I find these videos very informative and totally without self aggrandisement.

I think his reputation and the desirability of his watches speaks volumes.
