Rolex GMT Master II versus sub

I have a 16610LV Kermit and have retired it to the safe as it’s too precious to be a daily wearer. Have replaced it with a 116710LN but am not entirely convinced I like it. Am on waiting list for a 114060 sub no date and want some advice on whether to sell the GMT and keep the no date sub?

OT, but isn't it a shame all these watches are being hidden away in a safe and not worn like they should be.
This doesn't feel like a hobby anynore.

The LN GMT for me is the best watch Rolex do.

The green really sets it off and I think it beats a sub hands down.

The only negatives are the polished centre links but I'd get those brushed and the clasp is better on the sub obviously.

Are you going to prefer the Sub to the GMT?

If you are not keen on the GMT then perhaps its time to move it on.

5 digit GMT + 6 digit Sub is a great combination. Each wears differently, and makes for some nice variety. Prefer the 5 digit GMT over the 6 digit GMTs, and prefer the SubC over the 5 digit sub.

Cant see why the Kermit is sought after, it looks like cheap tattoo.

The Harrods Tudor looks miles better than it

Ironically i was just debating a similar thing
Put my hulk on today for the first in ages and im not liking it
Cant deal with the green anymore and hate the cyclops date
Thinking of a non date sub
Did they give you any indication of wait times

I'm going to echo the posters who have expressed a sadness that watches are "retired" to safes.

If l buy a thing l make sure that l can actually afford to use it as intended.

To try to end on a positive note - the no date sub is a great watch. I sometimes miss mine.

You’ll make more profit on the LV and a little profit the the 114060 when you get it so keep those.

There isn’t much profit in the 126710LN so sell that to a mug.

I’d probably be as sour as you if I couldn’t get one as well

Indeed. It's now like an investment club meeting in some parts.

Rolex sports watches were designed to be worn in harsh environments, why would you want to baby them?
    Cheers,

All just opinions my friend. To me the LV is a bit meh. I wouldn't buy one if I could walk in tomorrow and get it.

I had the LV and sold it when prices were a lot lower than they are now! EEK!! anyway, sold it to buy the same GMT as you have there, tbh, wish I kept the LV, as I felt the GMT was too 'precious' to wear everyday but didn't have a problem wearing the Kermit everyday. So, sell the GMT and wear the LV is my vote.

I really like the Sub ND so I’d probably go for that over the GMT. Just depends whether you will miss the date function.

LV - Unremarkable in your opinion. It's one of my top 10 watches of all time :)

GMT is a great watch, and deserves to be worn to a lot.

There is nothing wrong with PCLs and they are easily polished up when needed to tidy them up.

Personally, I have a preference for the older watches on the old style bracelets, and I've never liked the 16710 GMT Master II - just nothing better about it than an earlier 16750 or later GMTc for my tastes.
It's just a matter of time...

Anything of monetary value tends to be bought by collectors who just cannot resist hoarding.

I once had a chat at a Vintage Motorcycle Club (VMCC) meeting that I once attended, there were eight of us sat around the table and the average amount of bikes owned by a member was five. I was the peasant who only had one. Not because I was virtuous but because my garage was full of other stuff.

You will never stop it happening as seen in SOTC threads.

The GMT complication is neither interesting, nor useful. It also clutters the watch with the daft fourth hand, and is one more thing to potentially go wrong.

    Similar sentiments here.

Why not just enjoy wearing the GMT?
...& if the PCLs get too much - just de-bling it with a Rubber B.

No reason for a no date sub when you can get this.

    The best of both worlds

    It's simple.

They only made a comparatively low number of them.

That makes them collectible. And if they're collectible today, then especially in the Rolex world they'll be even more collectible tomorrow. And more valuable ..

Rolex GMT Master II versus sub

I vouch for the GMT. It could easily be the only watch you’ll ever need. Never looks out of place. Much more interesting than a sub in my eyes.

Adding or subtracting integers is remarkably easy. And the sub looks nicer, too.

It is - but it's that split second 'no-thought' analogue mental processing of the GMT hand against the bezel for the different time zone that I find useful. No '8 hours ahead'/count on your fingers type computations - just a glance.

I like the GMT complication but I must say I find it quicker to do the mental arithmetic than look at the dial, find the hand, squint to see where it lies on the 24hr track and then work out the time.

Just got back from my sixth Aus-UK-Aus trip in 13 months and the GMT function plus the quickset hour hand is a VERY useful feature. The only shortcoming of the 16710 is the relatively weak lume on the narrow hands. An Omega Seamaster GMT 2234 would be much better in that respect, but doesn’t have the classic style of the Rolex.

6 trips to Oz in 13 months?! I did it twice over the past six months and that was enough for me Chapeau!

I have the GMT Master II and adore it, the PCL really add a sense of class and occasion to it imo. I have just ordered a ND Sub and will treat it more as a 'beater' at the weekend etc and use the GMT more for work and travel.

I understand why the GMT could have the 'busy' accusation levelled at it, but tbh, after a few days wear I didn't find it an issue. Having said that, there is something really endearing about the simplicity of a ND Sub and it will never age.

    Good luck with the decision.
