Watching BBC News channel when not in UK

Anyone managed to successfully watch BBC news 24 channel when in Europe on a phone or iPad? Many links will work for a few minutes then say its a trial and stop or you get directed to dodgy looking sites which want your CC details..

    Any suggestions, thanks!

It’s not an ideal solution but you can steam iPlayer on your phone or tether to an iPad. I assume bbc news is available on iPlayer?

This essentially tricks the iPlayer into thinking you’re in the uk. This of course only works if you have a big data plan as eu data comes from your standard allowance.

DNS Proxy. You can have a trial for free.

I take your point about using a DNS Proxy but i don’t use it enough to pay for one and ideally it would be simpler streaming it than going through a Proxy as well.

A VPN should work.. Windscribe does a free account that gives 10gb a month traffic so should cover you for your BBC fix. Auto sets up on the iPad and iPhone you just open the app select to connect to UK server... and you should then be able to view bbc no issues from iPlayer...

In my experience, the IPs of commercially available VPNs are picked up by the BBC and quickly blocked (same with Netflix/Amazon etc).

My router at home allows me to set up my own VPN, and this works 100%.

This is a bit off topic but could you explain how you do this please? (Maybe start another thread?)

A decent router will allow you to configure it as an Open VPN server.
This means you can have a set up where it looks like your device (phone, laptop, PC etc) is connecting from home rather than your remote location.

    This is my router:

    Is it this one?

Bit of a faff to set it up, but once it's done it's very useful.

It could be, thank you. Mine is indeed a VR600, but no ‘v’ after. I need to try and understand this.

I agree with you but its something like $79 for two years

changing your DNS settings means DNS traffic only goes via them - whereas using a VPN *All* your traffic goes through them

The issue is that if you use a VPN then you're getting much worse streaming performance because of all the encryption & decryption that has to be performed. If you can get away with just using a smart DNS proxy then you're not having to process the video stream. Most smart DNS services have a free trial, for example:
    https://www.smartdnsproxy.com/page/bbc-iplayer.aspx

Of course VPNs have many other security advantages & are definately a good tool to have.
