Thread: What’s your unpopular watch opinion?

  1. #451
Comment sections are just about unreadable now, because every single launch and review article is plagued with anal retentives whining that the watch is far too big and that they would totally buy one if it was 'correctly sized' between 36.25mm and 38mm. Not every watch is for you...

  2. #452
I think less of anyone wearing a Hublot, and Biver should not be so praised for creating a naff version of an AP RO.

Richard Mille produces some of the most offensive things in history.

The hype for vintage submariners is now utterly stupid. They’re lovely things but they’re tools.

Tudor is a cynical marketing driven enterprise making watches at prices that rolex would if they weren’t now focusing on their BRIC customers. I wish people would stop saying Tudor are so ruddy good.

Almost all watch content on social media is offensive. Hodinkee might be out for your cash, but they are a good touch point for watch content in a broader context.

Batman, Hulk, in fact any Avenger is a fantasy figment.

I cringe every time when grown man refer to his watch as a bluesy or other childish nickname.

"Why buy a Rolex when a Casio keeps better time?"

My F91W has held its own for several years longer than my boss's Rolex. It cost about 1/2000th of the price.

Rolexes with the maxi case have lost the Rolex DNA. The Oyster Perpetual and Explorer are 2 of the very few modern Rolexes that have maintained the Rolex proportions. The other watches may as well have been made by another brand.

Nor can Rolex. An AD slapped me on the wrist and told me they’re “professional” watches.

"Sports" watch is used in the same vein as "sports" jackets. The sports in question are/were huntin', shootin' n' fishin'.

That said I was mountain biking the other day with a lad who, bizarrely, was wearing a Breitling Chronomat, so that's the exception that proves the rule!

While being in total agreement with the sentiment -

“Brand”. I bought a ‘make’, and if it needs work - it goes back to the ‘maker’ and not the ‘brander’.

Dunno on this one ... I'd say 90% of what you bought was brand.

    Maybe some repetition here:

I really don't understand Sinn watches, every time I hold one I don't see how or why they have the reputation they do. Same goes for Nomos
A quartz Grand Seiko is a giant waste of money

Any strap that increases stack height looks horrendous - NATO, bund, wraparound leather, whatever.

The fact that many watch companies only make their premium and limited editions in the largest sizes is indicative of how poorly they understand the enthusiast and collector market.

Omega, amongst others, seem to have totally forgotten that peoples' wrists aren't rectangular/square. No lug drop, no curvature in the bracelet links, just awkwardly flat (and usually far too thick) bricks.

Fashion is now king and it's killing function. This has been my ongoing complaint with dive watches in recent times. They sell more dive watches because they are pretty than well functioning because the target market is now desk-divers.

The Daytona lacks the most useful complication (date) yet its face is cluttered with dials that nobody uses.
Many Rolexes (including the Submariner) have their simple looks spoiled by up to 4 lines of script.

Sinn is a brand I want to like and it gets an inordinate about of love on this, and other, forums. I think it benefits from a general German engineering 'halo effect' (or, as the locals (probably wouldn't) call it, Deutschetechnikheiligensheineffekt) despite seeming to have genuine QC issues (subjective impression of mine judging by posts on this forum).

The 104 is lauded as one of the great 'one watch fits all' watches but I find it quite prissy in the flesh, neither fish nor fowl.

I know why brands do it, but I wish they wouldn't or didn't feel like they had to

If you're selling your product based on the fact its a beautifully handcrafted piece of engineering made by experts working at the highest level of their profession, then sticking it on David Beckhams/The Rocks/Bradley Cooper's wrist just cheapens it. If a grown man shows me their watch and tells me its the watch that so and so wears I feel a bit bad for them (with the exception of old James Bond watches)

    Might just be me
I bet that is not an unpopular opinion! Although I also dislike James Bond endorsements myself!!

If it didn’t have those dials but a date it would be a Datejust.

I agree - but have to admit, that I was seduced by the Rolex adverts in the ‘70s showing endorsements by explorers, climbers, pilots and racing drivers (Jackie Stewart).

I’m convinced that everyone who has a ‘birth year Rolex’ will tell everyone that fact - if they mention his watch.

”Nice watch - is it a Rolex?”

”Yes - it’s from the year I was born”

I really like Grand Seiko however IMHO Zaratsu polishing should just be called 'Polishing' as I see no discernible difference between what Seiko's team of polishing ninjas achieve at the top of Mount Iwate and what EVERY SINGLE OTHER LUXURY BRAND can achieve.

'Dive' style watches are just man jewellery.
Also people posting pictures of their watches is fair enough but then some fanny follows up with "mine says hello".

I like some Bell and Ross.

    I like some UBoat.

I hate most modern Omega. The Speedie leaves me cold in the flesh.

I like most Rolex including the modern ones.

A black dialled watch worn on a brown leather strap doesn't work for everyone.

The authenticity of many threads has become increasingly questionable, having become so inane and brand repetitive as to be almost indistinguishable from marketing fodder.

Bremont is the most naff brand around and I don't understand why people on this forum stopped hating them.

Don't be so dismissive. Some watches even sing to their owners or prospective owners. They wouldn't buy a watch unless it sings to them!

Poor old Bremont. I dislike the marketing, but I had a Bremont 300 and it was a superb watch. Too much stick.....

Jewels should only be used on the inside of a watch
