Garmin and Apple are going to largely bankrupt G-Shock. G-Shock is trying to milk the limited editions and go more into fashion watch territory and it won’t work out for them long term.

G-Shock is not exactly helping itself with its pricing. I mean you can get the new Apple Watch Ultra 2 with all it can do for £800. Or the G-Shock GMW-B5000TVB-1ER, essentially a bog standard G-Shock in a fancy titanium jacket, for £1,500. OK, that is the list price and you will get it for less, but even at half the price I don't see that as a compelling offer.

Yep, they are doing an omega and milking collectors where they can. Cant see it continuing forever.

I appreciate this is the unpopular opinions thread but in the interest of discussion:

I think they appeal to different segments of the market. If I want to go g-shocking, an Apple Watch won’t do. If I want a smart watch, a G-shock won’t do.

Garmin does have a foot in both camps, but only middle aged men who like to signal that they exercise wear them (unpopular opinion).

I don't disagree that they are different segments within the wider "electronic gadget watch" category, but the value disparity does seem quite glaring. If you're making Apple look good value then you must be doing something wrong.

...but an £80-£200 G-Shock probably will?

I don't think I've ever actually seen anyone wearing one. Maybe they fall between two stools, not rugged enough for G-Shock Man, not fancy enough for Apple Person.

Then again I don't spend a lot of time on mountainsides, which could be infested with well-weathered outdoorsmen consulting their Garmin watches for all I know.

If you can't change the watch battery yourself then you have a disposable watch cough-Apple-cough.

Ditto torches, GPS, phones etc. etc.

I've had a few Apple Watches, gone back to a G-SHOCK (GW-M5610U, best watch in the real world etc, the pricier ones make no sense whatsoever).

Sinn’s recent stuff leaves me cold…

The 756/757, U1000, 156, 157 and others were classics which have now sadly disappeared.

Used to love a good Sinn!

Alas, I agree, they have not made anything of interest to me since the EZM10.
    Shame.

Owning two or more Panerais does not entitle you to refer to your watches as your "Pamily".

The Swatch x Blancpains look better than the new limited edition 50 Fathoms releases

Regardless of DNA 47mm watches look comically too big on most wrists.

The only bezel worth having is a 12 hour rotating one, allowing travellers to use their watch as a GMT.
Tachymeters are pointless because you’ll need a 1km or 1m stretch of track or whatever to time your item along, and realistically require a Chronograph (unless somebody decided on a rotating bezel version, which I’ve not seen outside the modding world. Pulsometers are frustrating if the bezel is fixed because the user must wait for the next minute, and the frustration of waiting would likely elevate their heart rate.

Chronographs with rotating 12 hour bezels are the only watches worth buying, but nowadays are very rare unfortunately (unpopular enough opinion?) Eddie, there’s a market for you

    would scan better.

Also, in this video, they portray the opening of the REG. T.M. crown guard in dance form

I wouldn't put Richemont anywhere near a trinity, let alone a holy one in case they damage it at service.

A fat bloke rates 57 watch brands, ably assisted by a medium-fat bloke with odd clothes:

    https://youtu.be/J2r1NCSBycc?si=xywE6WQr-srZgPML

Quite an entertaining half hour, with a few opinions that may be unpopular. I find the fat bloke, Federico Iossa, quite engaging and to me he talks quite a bit of sense.

I loved your reference to Schrodinger ., I actually meant to say that unlike some people seem to think,a 36mm watch on a 8inch plus wrist can look just as wrong as a 45 mm watch on a 6 inch wrist .

Anything above a certain price is absolute balls.

A friend came over this week to show me his new Aquanaut and underwhelming is an understatement.

That’s been my ultimate dream in watches for about 8 years now but in person I felt a bit catfished.

At least you found out without buying one!

I don’t know if I would ever drop that kind of money on a watch, but if I did I’d want to see it reflected in a remarkable movement. AP wouldn’t be on the list.

    100%
The more watches I buy the more my mind settles on the basic no date Sub being the best watch you can buy. Perfectly in the middle of some kind of WIS Venn diagram.

See also: tourbillon. A solution that doesn’t work to a problem that doesn’t exist.

(…unless the problem is framed as: how to use a watch to part a wealthy person from a large sum of money)
