Thread: Platinum case - any special considerations?

Platinum case - any special considerations?

    I'm considering a platinum-cased watch.

Is there anything in particular to look out for when buying, or to consider in the context of long term ownership, with regard to platinum cases?

    Thoughts greatly appreciated.

Only thing I can say is they are seriously heavy. So you must make sure they are a good fit and it feels comfortable on your wrist.Any movement could annoy you over time.Adding a bracelet just magnifies everything I've just said.Michael Michaels the watch repairer at watchbox on YouTube did a video on different materials.

Quit your gym membership and buy 2 of the same watch...you got your personal gym on your wrist

Many thanks - that was certainly something I had in mind. I’m lucky enough to already have the watch in steel and enjoy a very secure fit with it - so hoping it will be fine from a balance point of view.

Other than the weight there aren’t really any practical differences with SS in my experience.

I've no idea where you are buying your platinum, but it's hardly soft.
It's just a matter of time...

I hate to agree with anything henk says, but even a broken watch is right twice a day. Platinum is pretty soft.

On the 1-10 Mohs scale, Steel and White Gold are about 4.0, Platinum is about 3.5 and Brass & Bronze are about 3.0.

All the 'abouts' are because there is no one type of each alloy, of course, and it needs to be remembered, too, that hardness is not the only determinant of performance.

In jewellery and watches, Platinum does well and is liked by those who know it.

That’s nicely put and helps my decision-making too. Many thanks.

Also keep in mind that scratches and subsequent polishing of platinum removes far less material than on steel or gold.

I’d love a platinum watch, but I’d prefer it with a matching bracelet. Which makes it far too expensive for me. A platinum DayDate, brilliant . But the prices....awesome.
For what it’s worth, my partner loves her platinum jewellery.

It's already been said it's heavy, but here are the numbers:

density of steel: up to 8.1 g/cm³
    density of lead: 11 g/cm³
(density of gold: 19 g/cm³ (most alloys are 18k, 75% gold))
density of platinum: 21 g/cm³ (most alloys are 95% platinum)

Almost twice as heavy as a lead for the same volume!
