Sir James Wilson Vincent Savile OBE KCSG. Plenty of others still at it.
Good luck everybody. Have a good one.
Tina Turner.
You never hear her referred to without the prefix "Icon".
Surely Elvis should be on the list?
This is the BBC don’t forget. All on the list will have to be women. Affirmative action to correct the historical gender imbalance don’t you know.
Neil Armstrong
Churchill
ABBA!
HRH Queen Elizabeth 2
The Beatles
Queen Victoria (d 1901)
David Attenborough
Einstein
Richard Burton

Should we assume that Icons have to be good! If not and we are going for all comers.
Stalin, Hitler, Churchill, Thatcher, Gandhi, Castro, Che, Kennedy, Reagan.
Pele, Maradona, Bradman, Jessie Owens, Jordan, Best,
Elvis, Madonna, Sinatra, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Queen, Bowie, Dillon,
Einstein, Von Braun, Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, Bill Shockley, Hawking,
Joyce, Christie, Steinbeck, Rowling, Hemingway, King
Pollack, Lichtenstein, Hirst, Picasso, Dali,
And so many other icons.
but fair play to the BBC for trying to distill the entire achievements of the 20th Century into a meaningless list.
Ref Armstong, what about Gagarin.
Whoever does not know how to hit the nail on the head should be asked not to hit it at all.
Friedrich Nietzsche
I think you’ve missed Mussolini. Re Gagarin everyone knows Armstrong was the first human in space duuh
Anyhoo, Goebbels would very proud of BBC efforts.

Alexander Fleming .
Oppenheimer?

I thought about Mussolini, but he is not really "iconic" as dictators go. Perhaps Ho Chi Minh or Pol Pot should be recognised.
As for space, a special mention to Albert 1 and Laika. , but people forget Aldrin actually piloted the LIM and all Armstrong did was climb down a ladder.
Whoever does not know how to hit the nail on the head should be asked not to hit it at all.
Friedrich Nietzsche
Is it just me who is thinking this whole exercise is about 18 years too late?

Oppenheimer's a good one, and what about Tesla.
I think many of you are missing the point. They have already decided who is on the list (as per AFB's BBC link), and our challenge is to guess who wins. So make your list by chosing one from each category.
Having said that, there is plenty of room for discussion about some of the people that have been selected, and how exactly they fit the criteria of "the 20th century's most important and influential figures".
My selection (from the options provided):
Mandela
Armstrong
Einstein
Chaplin
Luther King Jr
Ali
Picasso
Overall winner Einstein
I think some posters may be missing the point a bit here!
The object is to select from the BBC list and make your predictions from that - then see how close you are at the culmination of the series...
So clever my foot fell off.
Final tonight. I see I only guessed 3 out of 7 of the categories in line with the judges (note I didn’t say ‘correctly’).
Surprised no one has mentioned Alan Turing yet ?
z
It’s a bit like sports personality, it’s from a BBC list, I thought someone else did this a few years ago and Ali won it.
‘Icons’ is a misnomer- surely Hitler, for example, is a bigger icon than many on the lists.
Nonsense to fill the schedules.
Has to be Ali for me.
He's bigger than boxing and was and still may be the most recognised face in the world.
I don't understand how Bowie could be before Elvis.
I used to drive past Alan Turing Way in Manchestoh a few years ago. I already knew who he was.
As i put in my post, Ali was/is more than a boxer. He's not my favourite boxer, or favourite heavyweight, or favourite American heavyweight.
He's much more

There is an urban myth that the Apple logo represents the cyanide-aced apple that Alan Turing bit a chunk out of when he committed suicide.
