NOS/mint 114270. My perfect do it all watch.

What would you buy and why?
just a low key "chatty" thread
Not much imagination from me - I suppose I would buy the best Rolex 14060 that I could find and hopefully get some change - plenty around
(I have a 16610 from 2008 - but in a way, because I wear it in rotation, unless I keep it wound, I regularly have to change the date - so a Non_Date would suit me better as my main watch)

214270 plus cash in hand.
Breitling aerospace - good tool watch, plus one you wouldn't have to worry about residuals.
Failing that a Tudor BB.
Whoever does not know how to hit the nail on the head should be asked not to hit it at all.

If the thread gets a few responses, it will be interesting to see how many involve a Rolex
I've been looking at similar watches to the 114270 - I mean similar in size and maybe design - Tudor and Longines figure - of course they are much cheaper than the Rolex and what surprises me is that say the Tudor Heritage BB 36mm sell at a discount if you shop around - Swatch Group watches, i.e the Longines are always being advertised at discounts
I like the Zenith El Primero Tri Color - the 42mm one - lovely looking watch and within budget used.

I think i'd go for the zenith defy classic, seen them go for well below £5k in sales already.
If sticking to a used watch I would go for the best 114270 you can find. No date, excellent do it all watch that doesn’t attract attention, comfortable on the wrist and with a similar size dial to the 16610 that you are used to.
Spending less and going for new I would look at a BB58.
Sinn EZM 1. Impeccable heritage and a triumph of legible design.
Another vote for an Explorer - either 36 or 39 depending on taste
I had a BB36. The round indices on the small face made the watch feel too feminine - like the indices were jewels perhaps? No such problem with the 116000. Can’t vouch for the Longines I’m afraid.

I’ve always wanted a Zenith El Primero Stratos Flyback Striking 10th Felix Baumgartner. Available in good condition for a smidgen under £5k...

IWC MK 11 6b/346 fabulous manual wind military tool watch with layers of history.
I'd scratch around for a few hundred extra and buy this brand new:

Ooh, let's see, something like a Zenith Pilot or JLC Master Compressor.

If it were me I would be looking for a 114270 with the "ROLEXROLEXROLEX" rehaut. Or a nice 16570 and some change?
Away from Rolex, an IWC mark XV with lots of change. Look for ward to the incoming post!
I would look to pick-up a pre-owned Rolex Explorer II (either the 216570 or the older 16570) or perhaps a Tudor Pelagos (there is a nice one on SC at the moment for just 1900 GBP). The Pelagos is a lot of watch for the money. A couple of years back I was looking at both the Rolex SD and the Pelagos and on the wrist I much preferred the Tudor model. 14060Ms are starting to head well above the 5000 GBP mark but you should still be able to snag one within the allocated budget.
These days I tend to think that every collector should have a Rolex...but that you don’t need more than one. They’re all very similar, and all excellent.
That frees you up to be more adventurous. You can get brilliant deals on lightly used watches from the likes of IWC, Zenith, Grand Seiko, Breitling, Blancpain; well, virtually everything but Rolex. You’l find they too can be excellent, and, bought sensibly, highly cost effective.
My tip: An El Primero Chrono from Zenith. Less than two-years old, under guarantee, not much more than half retail, and a fabulous watch.
More fun, I think, than another Rolex. Variety is good.

Your taste in Rolex can change - In the past I never liked the Datejust, but I've come to appreciate it more and if going modern Rolex I now quite like the 116300 - 41mm - you can get a mint used version for well under £5k if you look around
im gona be very mundane and go with an explorer or speedy, just because a speedy is on my grail list.

Couple of nice pieces here on budget. Great to deal with also. But as has been well discussed they do not post. However makes for a nice trip or weekend break.
Good luck
Polar explorer 2 42mm or Blancpain fifty fathoms.

I guess it depends if this will be your only watch or if it’s part of a collection. For me after much research and thinking I know what I currently like and I don’t like it would be and of the following:
One watch
Rolex Datejust 36mm jubilee/fluted
Part of a collection
Zenith EL Primero 38mm
JLC Reverso classic medium

The Zenith Defy currently on SC would be a strong contender or, if you want no date, possibly an IWC Portuguese chrono or speedy 60th.

I could do with a dress watch so either a Glashutte Original Panomatic or a JLC Reverso Grande Taille
Options:
Rolex Milgauss
Omega Seamaster Aquaterra
Some of the 2018-19 releases will fit your bill too!
Have fun picking.

Go for some high quality but under the radar watches. Chopard Luc pro one or Ebel 1911 btr chronograph or glashutte original sports evolution. You could get 2 for your budget

There was a chopard luc XPS in white gold on sales corner a while ago for around this money. That would be the one just for the gorgeous micro rotor!

I would suggest a nice IWC Doppelchronograph 3711 or a vintage Omega Speedmaster of some sort, if the budget allowed.
In fact, scrub the Omega and get the IWC

Chronomaster have a few nice ones incl A Zenith, an Omega and an IWC.

Chopard Luc Chrono One in stainless steel. I recently spent £5k (roughly) on one of these, I really think you'd be hard pressed to find a better, more impressive, more beautiful watch for the money.
Not sure about retaining its value from here, but the price I paid for what looked like a completely unworn watch was less than half of the last retail price, so how much lower could it go?
The 214270 is a great shout. Its the only Rolex I still have in the house. Another option for me would be the Speedmaster 60th Anniversary. Stunningly proportioned chronograph.
IWC Mark XII, for about 60% of your £5k budget. Excellent watch, even more excellent movement.
