2019 Superleague and rugby league thread

Well just like last year, the time is almost upon us!

Thursday 31st January is the date of renewed hostilities between Saints and Wigan, and I can’t wait!

With almost inevitable predictability, i again called it right last season....

Season Opener on Thursday 1st February is almost upon us!

Well, Saints and KC went their seperate ways and it was no shock after our lack of direction at times and poor recruitment but with new coach Justin Holbrook arriving in time for Magic Weekend we looked a different team but still one capable of an amazing kamikaze moment or two, and the innate ability to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat https://youtu.be/OHphpqI3eBI

Or of course, snatch a defeat from the jaws of victory..... https://youtu.be/zyMESo7gYiY

But I’m confident we’ll be there or there abouts again this season, with young talent like Richardson and Grace, old hands like Wilkin and the ever dependable Roby. With some magic from Daily M winner Barba (with a pre season under his belt) I see us in the semis again at season end.

    COYS!!!!

Barbra indeed injected that extra bounce we needed. Unfortunately he lost form (and some might say interest) at a key stage of the season but ultimately the first silverware since 2014 for Saints (in the form of the league leaders shield) was scant reward after a season of losing just 4 games in the league. By comparison, Warrington lost a barely believable 11 games.

Ultimately, we know how the league works and although the final was a grind-fest, it once again proved that you only need to get into the playoff places and then have a couple of good games.

Catalans proved that grunt and brute force would beat superior skill and guile in a one off game, but we shouldn’t be surprised as in Wanes world it happened a few times!

Barba has gone back to Australia with the MOS which I predicted back on 2nd Feb 2018

It’s like a reversal of the Cahllenge cup from last season where we didn’t turn up......

    COYS!!!!

Ps walmsley has signed a 4yr as well!!!

(I’d like to thank all the opposition fans for telling us each time we played) and hopefully we will be a bit more balanced, and not trying to put 75% of our plays through one player!

    Bring it on!

Yes, the new season is almost upon us. I'm reasonably optimistic that Wakefield will go well this season, we've made some sensible signings although I`m still not sure about Danny Brough, at 36 his best days are behind him but on his day he's still a very effective player. Chris Chester knows him well, so we have to trust his judgement. Unfortunately we've lost Pauli Pauli for approx. 8 weeks due to a knee injury, but with the strength in depth we now have that shouldn't be too much of a problem.

The ground issue still rumbles on, God knows what's happening, but we're still at Belle Vue this year and likely to remain so till it falls down.

I predict we'll finish 5th again, London are likely to finish bottom, other than that I`ve no idea!

Anyway, 22-12 flattered Wigan last night: if Ben flowers try was fortunate, Marshall’s was a gift but Saints much more mobile pack was much better than Wigan’s too-big pack, especially with the reduced interchanges.

Roby turned back the clock with another excellent performance, and it was great to see LMS doing his thing, followed by Mark Percival hitting way above his weight. Powell’s dive was embarrassing though for the Goons.

All in all, I think we had a great start, and the new “team” on Sky were much better, however Eddie Hemmings needs putting out to grass. He kept coming out with such nonsense, trying to suggest foul play that wasn’t there.....

“Did Percival play at the ball before it went in touch", "did Tommy M have his foot on the line when he knocked the ball back",

    "did Fages knock on",

"Is Wigan's disallowed try the first controversial decision of the year"

“Was there a hint of a shoulder charge”

I think tonight is the worst I have ever heard him.

He made Clarke sound like a Saints fan!

Yeah thats the talk re Barba, however until its been officially confirmed thats whats happened it could be owt. And thats if it is ever confirmed/revealed, i guess we will never know the absolute truth, just second or third hand rumours and part truths. One thing is for sure though, he is a wasted talent who doesnt seem to learn, like Sandow, Chase, Hardaker to name a few. Seems the more talented they are the easier they self destruct and implode.

I suppose Eddie has to ask questions during his commentary. TBH at first glance and on TV I thought much the same re foot in touch, was it played at etc. I think he just asks it so they get a replay perhaps.

These new interchange rules will probably favour a more mobile pack that can do longer minutes like you say though. Hilly and Coops can both do big minutes for us thankfully. The likes of a 10 minute ‘impact’ prop may soon be a thing of the past eh?. I think we’ll see more of the backs running and using footwork on the bigger fellas as they tire, a more entertaining game perhaps. On the flip side though, once all the subs are used I dont want to see players struggling, I get the argument they should be fit, but I can see the downside of this as well in slow plays, tired legs etc. The game is hard enough without asking more of the players, we’ll just have to see how it pans out.

Looking forward to the Ull derby tonight, then we face the whinos, just hope we get a win to get our season started.

NRL are reporting it pretty much as fact https://www.nrl.com/news/2019/02/01/...sland-cowboys/

Silly chap. Not the first time he’s hit her, if the allegations are true. He was charged in 2013 for domestic violence.

Eddie is trying to be controversial, he does it so many times in a game it’s embarrassing, last night he called “6 to go” for a deflection, he called “Saints head and feed” when it was Wigan and several other gaffes. Hardaker banging his face on Percivals chest head-on could never, ever be seen as a shoulder charge except by Eddie.....

Agree with Stuart’s comments, I think the interchange rule will have some effects, some good and some not so good. Even though my team (Trinity) have used the old interchange rule to great effect, bringing Pauli Pauli and Fifita on as impact players for short stints, overall I dislike the ‘10 minute impact player’ thing.

I enjoyed last night’s game, a great start to the season. I wasn’t too bothered who won, apart from the first 20 mins when Saints were totally on top I thought it was quite evenly matched.

Maybe Rick’s watched the game through his COYS glasses?..........we’re all guilty of being slightly biased when it’s our own side playing. Rick, I bet you were sweating till the last try made the game safe!

As for Barba, looks like he’s in trouble again. I find it hard to have sympathy with these ‘flawed genius’ types, I didn’t enjoy seeing Hardaker playing again last night either. Will Barba pop up in Super League again?.......I hope not despite him being an excellent player on his day.

I enjoyed last night’s Sky presentation, I like Jamie Jones-Buchanan and I like Jon Wilkin......except when they’re playing against the mighty Trin

Just watched the hull derby and it was a cracking game, much closer than last nights game imho.

    Great game for the neutral.

Yes, just watched it myself, thoroughly enjoyable match played in the right spirit. Whoever lost the game by such a slim margin was bound to be disappointed.

Well, glad we got the first game out the way and came out unscathed. King in the SR was a surprise but he held his own and we now know he’s a viable option there as well. Thought Mamo may have figured somewhere after his hat trick last week against Widnes, and also for his pace.

The binning of King was harsh imo, ok it was a ‘dangerous’ tackle in the strict sense, but no intention or malice there at all.

Austin is fast becoming a fans favourite and got the sponsors MOM but I agree with Sky, Ratchford was superb last night. Bit early for Man of Steel talk though. Our pack overwhelmed their counterparts as well. Unless Leeds improve considerably could be a long season for them on that performance. Ultimately though, it was 6-6 second half so maybe they aint that bad....

Didn't see that coming, thought we might struggle but never expected this.

I`m fuming, thank god I didn`t go! Just tried regulating one of my own watches whilst listening to the commentary, had to give up and walk away from it........Teddy has temporarily left the cot.

Just poured myself a large whisky, I`m off for a soak (and a sulk) in the bath. Wifey says I`ve to stay in there till I've calmed down.

I suppose it's only a f*****g game.....Saint Helens will get a cricket score against us next week on this form!

Castleford win their 2/2, against Hull.

Looked a pretty close game to me, and could have gone either way. The Cod’s Losing streak continues......

Hull are on an awful run! Think the lack of signings in the off season will show. We’ve got Bowden and Green injured but missing some size in the forwards. I think it’s a season too far for Manu and Mini too...

Hull were unlucky imho, Connor tried to take the game himself in the last 20 minutes and was close a couple of times. Hull will be fine, but I can’t see them above 6th.

Personally, I’d be worrying about keeping Connor. He’s developing into a top class player and if he can cut out his dissent and wind up tricks, he’ll be on all the top top clubs radars, if he isn’t already.

We beat HKR but truth be told it wasnt a good performance. A better team would have done us I think. However if we can play bad and win I suppose it bodes well for when we hit our straps.

After the WCC hullabaloo it’s nice to get back into SL.

Wakefield spanked Les Dracs last night, making a mockery of all this “Catalans will be a force this season” from Eddie Hemings and the like.

I didn’t even think Trinity played in top gear but brushed the dragons away with relative ease, and the MattySmith/Gigot/Timmins conundrum continues.

More of a worry was David Mead’s injury, I wish him all the best.

In other news, Widnes look in major financial trouble, and I hope they can pull out of it.

I haven’t watchd the Trinity-Catalans match on TV yet, I’ve got it recorded and I’ll watch it when I’m in the mood. I was at the game and I was relieved that we won, but I wasn’t impressed. Our attack isn’t sharp enough to open teams up, we ‘re struggling to turn good field position into points. That’s why we lost to
Saints, we had plenty of possession in good areas but failed to score, and the first 25 mins against Catalans looked similar. On the plus side, Danny Brough had an excellent game, I was impressed with his cover tackling and the pace he’s still got for a 36 year old. He looks leaner and fitter than last year, hopefully he’ll stay injury-free and have a positive influence on our season.

Last night’s Saints-Leeds game was a good one, looks like Leeds are moving in the right direction. Possibly Leeds were unlucky to loose, had the ref got the knock-on decision correct in the last few minutes they would’ve had an attacking set close to Saints line and one score coyld’ve won the game. We play them next Friday at Headingly, first home game of the season, I’m sure they’ll be well up for it we may end up feeling the backlash.......or maybe Trinity wil piss on their fireworks and spoil the party.......I certainly hope so!

Trnity gave been fairly lucky with injuries over the past 2 seasons, but our luck may be running out. We’ve already lost 3 players for 8-12 weeks each, all forwards, not a good start. On paper our strength in depth is excellent, we have quality players to bring in, but it’s still a worry.

Wigan lose to a golden point, so they are rooted at the bottom on 0 points......

Leeds 18 Trinity 35........I`m wearing a huge smile tonight

Didn't see that one coming, I honestly thought we'd struggle tonight. One or two refereeing decisions went our way, and I think we were fortunate with the disallowed Leeds try, but I`ll take a win at Headingly regardless!

Watched some highlights earlier, you murdered them!

Johnstone is a real talent, he was very unlucky with conceding he dropout which led to a Leeds try. I thought the score line flattered the Rhino’s.

Conceding the dropout was a strange one, if Johnstone had left the ball it would've gone dead from the kick-off for the second time. Easy to say with the benefit of hindsight.

Johnstone's good with ball in hand, but his defence is still suspect. He tackles well, but his positional play needs to improve.

Well Warrington struggled and lost to Catalan but that wasn’t the biggest upset....

Excerpt from the WiganToday match report from their loss to London:-

“This was the Warriors' fourth defeat in five matches but it will raise more eyebrows than any of the others.

    They were awful.

Adrian Lam said they couldn't get out of second-gear against Hull FC a week ago.
Today? They stalled on the driveway.”

Saints 6 from 6, and Benny “He’s 37 you know” Westwood shows his hard man credentials by head butting Escare, the smallest Wigan player on the pitch.

More worrying is the injury to Trinity’s Tom Johnstone, a great player to watch and I hope it’s not too serious.

Haven’t heard anymore about the injury to Tom Johnstone, hopefully it’s not as serious as initially feared.

Ben Tupou also ended up on crutches after getting injured, hopefully that won’t be a bad one. Ironic that we lose our two best backs on the same match, I guess the fact that we won is some consolation. Trinity were fairly lucky with injuries last year, but this season’s not looking good so far. Fortunately we’ve got depth in the squad, particularly in the forwards, looks like we’ll need it!

The only side playing consistently well at the moment is Saints, but Leeds gave them a scare and so did Trinity........it’s turning into an interesting season. Come the end of the season I think the top 3 will be Saints, Warrington and Cas, but I wouldn’t like to predict any of the rest! I expect Wigan to come good eventually, and I can’t see Leeds continuing to struggle, but neither are good at the moment.

Just learned today that Tom Johnstone is out for the season, anterior cruciate ligament damage again but not the knee he damaged in 2017 when he missed much of the season. Apart from the obvious loss to the team you really have to feel for the guy, second time this has happened to him.

Fingers crossed that he makes a full recovery again.

Watched the Cas game last night at home, then called in the local for a couple of late pints. Bumped into a few Cas fans who had been to the match, they trudged in like a defeated army and got no sympathy from myself and a couple more Trinity fans. That’s what it’s like in Normanton, roughly 50:50 split between Cas and Trinity, always plenty of banter!

Saints were v. good last night, but Cas should’ve done better. Daryl wasn’t happy, I’ve never seen a coach stage a one- man pitch invasion before to castigate his players, a comedy moment I won’t forget.

Unless the wheels come off the Saints bus big-style I can see them dominating the game this season.

Powell looked to have a total meltdown!

I thought Cas were poor, ahentons try was a mile offside so the score line flattered them.

I think that performance on Friday would have had some motivation from JJB saying on Thursday that Warrington hadn’t hit top gear but we had. I STILL think we’ve got a couple of gears left in us but we were ruthless. Bearing in mind we had 2 tries chalked off and missed conversions, the score line could’ve been a lot worse.

Roby was awesome again, and if he stays injury free I can see him as MOS...

Well this weekend has thrown up some odd results so far. The Pies conceding a 20 nil lead, Cats doing a job on Saints was the one I never saw coming, but to be fair to Cats they do turn it up on their home soil as we found to our cost. Next week we visit Saints and that should be a good game, should be !!. We actually made hard work against a very committed London side for the first 25 mins or so, we cant do that against Saints tho.

Refereeing was poor, Cats messing in the ruck and diving around was poor but the weather killed us more than they did.

No Fages or Lomax didn’t help neither did Louie M-S staying home, selfish swine wanting to see birth of his child!!

As I keep saying nobody wins anything in April but Wire and Saints look head and shoulders over everyone this season.
