Good grief, I cannot afford one Patek let alone the whole brand.

I'd like to say id be surprised if it's anything but rumour, but then there's no smoke without fire. I think for brands like AP, PP and Rolex being independent is part of their selling point and I can only see a sale harming the brand long term.

How long until the Calatrava is on sale with a swatch ETA movement??

Purely from a finance point of view I can see a sale being attractive to the stern family. Swatch or Richemont would pay over the odds to acquire the company.

Perhaps they are expecting a slowdown in Asia and think now the time is right to sell.
I just hope a hedge fund doesn’t buy it!

Yes, but they keep them for 6 months to stop the buyer flipping for a profit.

Why would they sell? Seems like it still has potential to be making big money for a long time to come.

Seems quite likely, and some of the things they've done in the last year can definitely be seen as "window dressing" for a potential buyer...

I suspected something was up when the twenty4 automatic was announced on a Monday, and in shop windows by Wednesday... Liquidity issues?

Lets remember its only the Nautilus that is truly popular, and quartz twenty4 the moneymaker...

Any potential sale will take that into account. That’s the difference between the value of the sssets and the amount someone is willing to pay to acquire the company.

I actually think LVMH would probably be favourites. They don't have anything like Patek right now. Richemont would be overlapping a lot of their current brands - Vacheron/Alange

But the inside info said the highest bidder doesn't have any experience with luxury watch, but it has several luxury cars in its portfolio

*hopefully they don't change it to Patel Philippe after they bought it....

I always think the LVMH watch brands play it ‘safe’ too often with the design. Especially true for Zenith and even Tag. I love that they designed a tourbillion for 14k but the case/face is truly dull and I’m probably within their target market.

Play it safe?! Have you seen the older Nataf era Defy Extreme range?

Just because you are the highest bidder doesn't necessarily mean you will be successful in acquiring the company. More often than not it's a balance between value and startegic fit/bidders proposed direction.

Doubt they'd do that. Do you seriously think they'd change the name to Patel? It's the high IQ people with a lot of money who are buying Pateks. I'd wager those people are mostly in places other than Great Britain.

Lots of rumours swirling around that the Sterns are having troubles, marital, next gen - ironic - and now would be a good time to sell, PP's stock has never been higher.

    Yes...and I don’t like them! Haha

The el primero range is really what I was talking about when playing it safe. Same with Tag.
I liked their f1 gulf limited edition this year but it was only available with quartz movement.

On reading about the potential PP sale, I came across Breitling being sold for 800m! Seriously!!!

    Brave buyers. Very brave.

I’m sure that lots would love to buy it but what should the sterns do with the money? My bet is they they won’t sell it

Could turn out to be seriously cheap. One of the true big brands and previously in private ownership forever - there couldn’t be many similar players available or likely to become available, so...

It’s a private equity investment - just don’t mess about with the historic models too much, and it should pay off.
