Basel 2019 - return of the Tudor sub?

just posted on their Instagram - looks very like the sub dial on the 79090

I did almost update the Tudor Basel 2019 thread when I saw this on IG this morning but it doesn’t go down well for some reason.

No applied markers, lume direct on dial... fingers are crossed for a sub case!

What I find intriguing is the juxtaposition between the world of mechanical watches and the modern digital age. Many thought the mechanical watch was dead when quartz came along. They were wrong - thank goodness. But, in the modern age manufacturers are reliant on social media to help drive demand for watches that have less functionality to an average smart watch or mobile phone.

Here's more speculation. Much more, actually.

That minute track is embarrassingly bad

Yeah dunno what that’s about - I’ve looked at most of the Tudor’s I’ve had under Loupe and finish is excellent on the dials. Maybe loss of resolution through the image being lifted from Instagram - don’t know but doubt it would like that under scrutiny

I think it’s some sort of distortion, if you look they discrepancy is all in the same place almost as if a crystal is distorting the lines maybe. No way is that modern Tudor finish, some explanation I’m sure.

I think that's the original 80s prototype again, but clearly indicates where the inspiration for a new model is coming from.

Different minute track so it’s not the original 80s watch

Basel 2019 - return of the Tudor sub?

Maybe it’s not a sub. Maybe it’s a bb58 but with a sub dial..... so no new sub case. That might make sense. Could be the red bezel too. So bb58, older sub dial and the orig red bezel. Yeah I could see that happening. Might save me some cash too lol

This has to be a Tudor Sub.

    1) Triangle marker at 9 (not a 90 degree shot of 12 as no shield close enough)

    2) Printed markers

    3) Distortion clear of the indices so domed crystal/plexi

So I think it’s safe to assume that it’s a Mercedes handed Sub black dial as the snowflake would have square markers.

I’m going to suggest maybe they have gauged the market for the smaller 58 case and will use this, upgrades for the bracelet etc... but there will be some thing modern for the bezel or something, rather than just like a re-release surely...

Why wouldn't this be the re-emergence of Tudor's other unique handset, the lollipop??????
76100s had pointed quarter markers too, so it is not necessarily a mercedes variant.
Looking at the print quality, I think that is a scanning issue, all the bad bits are where a horizontal scan would have to suddenly go from light to dark (or vice versa) if you were scanning to a low resolution.

I would be surprised to see Mercedes hands. Tudor have done snowflake hands and round plots on a sub before.

My feeling is this is the most likely scenario.

I agree with your sentiment on the bank balance too. A Tudor Sub would mean another hit to the Rolex fund, something the BB58 has already taken a chunk out of.

My money is on a BB and BB58 with triangle dial and lollipop hands.
All will have black dials but with the various coloured bezel inserts to match the current BB offerings.

Me too, 42mm, please. Oh and a burgundy one too. Be the perfect combo with a Tudor BB chrono.

I don't see it happening but it is nice to fantasise

That’d be a mess of later decades of parts on a 50’s style BB58 case though wouldn’t it.

No more than the current BB offerings (which I like) as far as I know there was never a big crown snowflake for example.
They are not producing a facsimile of the original watches but modern watches inspired by the company history.
I think it could look quite good.

I would say 38/39mm far, far more likely than making it bigger!

That's unlikely imho. Dont think they'd go to the trouble of building the new movement for the 58 case and then not expand the range.

I'm not knowledgeable enough to know the intricacies of all the back catalogue that they could use for inspiration, but from a business perspective this comment makes the most sense.
The 58 is lovely and variations on this will reap the rewards for tudor.

Speaking to my man in Goldsmith’s, who was speaking to the Tudor rep, consensus was they’re not expecting any Sub-style release this year.
But they probably only know as much as we do...

As a precaution, I told him to get me the first one if they do release them this year. :)

    They misread the wish list.

"Oh, you meant USMC rejected prototype"

"No I meant Tudor Sub, you know, while we packed oyster cases with Felsa and AS movements"

"No I think I heard Commando"

    "No... Dammn.. read. My. Lips.

    SUB!

    TUUUUUUUUDOOOOR

    SUUUUUUUB!

    Are you dumb?!"

    ....

Meanwhile at the next desk. What Rolex do they want this year? Let me see... Got to keep them guessing... something they will never suspect... I’ve got it, we will cancel one of our most popular models, the 116710LN and then just not replace it with anything. They will never see that one coming.

Trouble is I bet the hype train won’t be as packed next year. I know they never directly hinted the sub was coming but people will have the hump about it I reckon, the next teaser will be met with sarcastic replies and people digging up obscure old references to guess at.

I don’t mind the new release in its own right having seen really good quality video of it but I’d never wear one due to the lug to lug length and the 12 hour bezel which is useless to me. It’s almost sad seeing that dial though with its vintage’esque painted lume markers.
