Square sports watches. Show us yours.

I keep thinking to myself that my life won't be complete until I have a square sports watch with a grey or green (or possibly blue) dial.

What a ridiculous thing to think, really. It's shameful. What's wrong with the fifteen watches I do own? Nothing. But they're not square, you see.

Whilst I battle my demons, help me out by posting your square sports watches here.

New arrival on Saturday, on the Velcro strap it wears surprisingly comfortable for a big watch!

^ I never used to like those, but I've come round to them. Looking good on the Velcro there!

Bit too big for my wrist, I think.

Marmite, but a lot of fun to own, and worth having a scratch-proof ceramic watch in the collection.

The GO is superb. Way outside my price bracket, sadly.

Definitely! Extremely cool Zenith, though again too spendy for me. I'm also thinking of a time-only watch specifically at the moment.

In order to make this thread some use as a general reference, I think I'll post some of the watches I've been looking at.

    First up, Spinnaker Hull Riviera:

    Pros:
    - overall rather good looking to my eyes
    - currently very cheap (£173 in the sale on the Spinnaker web site, usually £304)
    - grey dial

    Cons:
    - square watch with round dial, would prefer square watch with square dial
    - no lume on the 9 and 3, for some reason
    - the killer, it is 15mm thick. It beats me why anyone would make a time-only watch that isn't a diver that is 15mm thick. I want something fairly slim, so this is a turn off.

To add to the Cons list -

It's not square. Spinnaker decribe it as a cushion case.

    Mido Multifort TV Big Date:

    Pros:
    - very handsome watch, not thick
    - big date complication is, to me, extremely cool

    Cons:
    - both the green and grey dials are a bit darker than I'd like
    - not sure about the horizontal lines texture on the dial, though it does fit with the "1970s TV" theme
    - at about £1,000 this is pricier than I really want to go

A valid point, though it does look a bit squarer when seen directly face on.

My other reservation is that I feel there's something a bit cheesy about the way Spinnaker sort of try to look like a British microbrand when they're really just a brand of a larger Hong Kong based business. Nothing wrong with Chinese watches but I think you should own it.

When I was looking up the definition of cushion case, I saw it described as a 'squircle'. I hope never to type said abomination of a portmanteau word again!

There's a 3-hand TAG Heuer Monaco, 37mm too which makes it a much easier wear, and since it's never been wildly popular, it's available from ~1K up used. There's a silver dial too.

FWFW, I Liked the Mido from day one, would probably be my choice. C24 has them under £800 (add ~30% for import costs, tax &c.).

Love the Mido too. My current favourite new watch is the Hamilton PSR. Not exactly square. More oblong-ish, but very cool nonetheless.

That's lovely. Do you have the reference?

It's a really cool watch, but hard to find below a thousand when all costs are considered.

Maybe I should just wait until I can justify a grand for that or the TAG...

    Vesuviate Attivo:

    Pros:
    - I really like the look
    - modest price (around US$425)
    - hardened steel case and bracelet, a feature I always appreciate

    Cons:
    - the grey dial version which I like best is out of stock
    - integrated 24mm bracelet so no real chance to use other straps with it, though Vesuviate do have a leather strap designed to fit it. That said, I want to wear my square sports watch on a bracelet anyway.
    - polished bezel and middle links of bracelet possibly make it too shiny?

I was leaning towards getting this. But as ever, the siren song of more expensive watches is distracting...

That's the digital one right? There is something about a chunky steel LED watch that always appeals to me...maybe just because it reminds me of my late Dad in his 1970s prime.

Don't compromise, in the end it's money lost. Take your time - and try a WTB on here of course.

  25. #25
Yes that's the one. Interesting story behind it, first ever commercial digital watch and was mega expensive. Now it is just moderately expensive!

Thanks very much. I see it's quartz though, which slightly takes the shine off it for me.

Some absolutely cracking watches being posted!

Here's a forthcoming retro item from Ferro:

Very clean, but it feels a bit too 'generic 70s' to me.

Another not-really-square watch that I like (maybe I should just admit this is the squircle watch thread):

Titanium with hard coating, and available in beadblasted finish (as pictured) - which just adds to the sheer manliness of it. A little on the chunky side at 12.3mm thick, but good looking with it. NH35. Currently sells at €479 inc. VAT.

There's also this Brew Retromatic which is a looker:

Once again I deviate from my mission, as this is more of a rectangular hipster watch than a square sports watch. Not actually available any more. I'm just posting watch porn at this point.

Here'e a rectangular cheapie from the Seiko Recraft range:

Also available in blue and brown. Good looking watch but basic spec (7S26, Hardlex, 50m). Strap looks a bit nasty, blue version has bracelet that probably is no great shakes either.

I can see why you like it. Good looking watch and a friendly price. Got me looking at their website and I'm a little afraid to admit now I even kind of like this:

You need a Glycine Airman 7 Plaza Mayor -

    Automatic, four time-zones & a modest 53mm x 53mm.

There's also a humungous round version.

    Those are mad.

I actually emailed them about the grey Attivo, and got a reply from the founder Y K Wong the next day (a Saturday). He seems a nice chap. They're not doing any more of the grey Attivos, though.
