As long as it's safe, does it matter what people do to their cars/bikes. Without people like Chip Foose, Von Dutch, Darryl Starbirc, etc the world would be less enjoyable place and much more ugly.

Personally I love it that people want to customise their cars and personalise them. Whether it look good or not is just a matter of other people's taste.

As for silly cars, we have a Rose Gold Bentley Baggy round our way. Nuf said.

I'm a big fan of customising cars. It's been going one for decades. Hot rods were making a boring car unique.

When I was younger I used to avidly read Max Power. I haven't customised my cars, but I think its great for those who do. Its interesting , fun etc.

Oh my, so crammed full of subjective judgemental critisism.

I see only one problem with it all Sir; the small box you seem to keep your mind locked up in.

Yes, interesting point. Seems reasonable but... not at the same time... I mean, how safe is it that any idiot with a drivers license who puts down the money can hire/buy a car with unreasonble levels of performance for use on the public road?

One thing is pretty certain is that he has wreaked the ride, and most likely goes through tyres faster than a normal Beemer, if that's possible

but at least it's not a standard rep mobile.

also he is óbviously not taking it anywhere near serious (although the plate is equally obviously fotoshopped).

Actually, I have been known to wear a baseball cap whilst driving an open-top car with no sun visors.....it keeps the sun out of my eyes and serves a purpose., it’s almost a necessity to see where you’re going. Wearing one back to front (or even worn properly) in a normal car is just silly, driver thinks he somehow looks cool but he looks like a bellend. A bit like those wallys who wear woolly hats in summer, or in the gym.....why!

It’s not an age thing, it’s more about not looking stupid.

    Same here even wíth sunvisors.
Sunvisors limit the slot you are seeing through.

I live under 300 sunny days/year and reduce glare with orange ´road view´ sunglasses and keep the sun out of my eyes with the visor of the cap while having the unobstructed windscreen.

Does it rise up when you start it? Otherwise how do the front wheels turn? It doesnt look like there's enough room.

Well, you do want it to stay on in a cabrio, but I have it adjusted well so is easy to on/off.

Looks like air suspension, so yes. You can adjust the ride height.

I’ve got half a plan to do something like an Exeo or an A4/6 estate on air. I also quite liked the Skoda Yeti on air ride that I saw.

I’ve modified every car (Focus/Octavia/320/Altea) I’ve owned for the last 10 years. The Focus got a set of Eibach springs because the stock suspension was worn out at 100k and it was cheaper to buy the Eibachs. Yes it lowered the car but it also rode much better and was better with a load. The Octavia had a hybrid turbo upgrade with fuelling, intercooler, exhaust modifications and corresponding software to take the output from 197bhp/260 ft lbs to 360bhp/400 ft lbs with the brakes and suspension mods it needed to go with the power. Went like a rocket, looked like a minicab. It was also half the price to insure of a standard car, by insuring with a specialist.
There’s nothing wrong with modifying a car but there’s no accounting for taste.

That too was obvious. Too funny though to not ´misunderstand´.

And yes, I think it looks ridiculous on me but it is what it is, there is no less rediculous alternative is there, thus so be it.

    Bloody hell!

I have a Mk1 MX-5 with Meister R adjustable dampers, lighter wheels with really good tyres, uprated brakes and a new plug-and-play ECU. The plan is to throw some money at a half cage, turbo set up and a competition clutch which will give 240bhp (around 250bhp/tonne with a target 950kg weight). Same principle as the Octavia, subtle changes without making it obvious (my ride height is slightly lower too). The ECU allows for two rev limiters (so you can have launch control) and you can set it to make it pop and bang on the overrun but I'm in this for stealth performance and not to show off. There is, however, an option for a switch (or power button) so the car has 180bhp or so as standard and 240 with the switch flicked. With no driver aids (apart from power steering) it seems a sensible precaution. Oh and I fancy an LSD again. No body mods though, everything looking as standard as possible bar the wheels and ride height.

I think it got one, I thought it was standard on the late 1.8 mk1s.

Edit: Quick research might indicate JDM cars only, which yours isn't of course.

I kind of smile to myself when I see a young lad in a lowered golf with modifications as at least it shows their into their car, so many young lads (and girls) seem to just want a pcp deal on a brand new bland car that they can’t even tell you what the engine capacity is or even be capable of opening the bonnet.
Of course I’m getting old and grumpy these days and the same lads driving style/standards tends to pee me right off!

    Hi Mitch,
Welcome from another Wakey man........I’m from Ossett originally but currently residing in Normanton, got an offer from a woman that I couldn’t refuse, I’ve been here since 1996!

I think your motor’s OK, nothing silly about it!

I’m into classics, 1970 MGB is my summer toy, I spend more time taking it to pieces than driving it.

Mine has an open diff and it's nowhere near as much fun as my last Mk1, which was an import and did have an LSD. Huge fun on roundabouts and corners in the dry, huge fun on roundabouts and corners in the wet, especially when it was on Parada 2s. I'm not sure I want a turbo and to not always be in control of how much power my tyres are receiving.

Yep, I go to that show every year. Didn’t exhibit mine but parked it at the bottom of the hill so it was accessible for anyone who wanted to see it. I probably saw your 1600e, I remember wanting one as a youngster so I always take a look when I see one.

My MG looks perfectly standard but the engine’s significantly uprated and the suspension’s got a few mods. I like cars to look standard but I don’t mind modding them too, I’m not fanatical about originality.

    Saying whát exactly?!

If something gets into production cars it is safe, legal and finding customers. Period.

    Exactly.
I’ll have another crack at it when the funds allow, something similar but a bit newer and almost certainly a 2.0T 4 pot, but I’ll be aiming for 400bhp (or about 300bhp/tonne - the Octavia was 276bhp/tonne) and I’ll make sure I’ll fit a slipper to it this time - and maybe make it a bit lower......
I don’t think I’ll do it on the same budget as the Octavia owes me £6500 for the car and somewhere around £3k for the Mods with a bit of careful budgeting and liquidating of some of the old bits.

The weight saving was the most effective - a set of TD Pro Race 1.2 saves about 10kg on a set of wheels, the Porsche 4 pots on the front looped off 12kg EACH! A hollow Autotech RARB was 1/4 the weight of the standard one (although I lost that when I fitted a whopper of a 26mm H&R unit.

Same with FFF and the floating discs of his Detroit iron&steel. At amazingly reasonable cost too! It dropped my jaw with ´envy´!!

That is the other side of the medal Foxy of wanting to improve on already quite nifty Japanese runabouts; there is nothing lardy to start with; even carbon stuff being more marginal gains ;-)

    On the subject of huge gains and japanese runabouts in the ´silly´ context;

Only on the front - a standard vRS wheel was somewhere approaching 11kg - the TD are just under 9. A stock front caliper (from memory) also weighed something ridiculous - approaching the weight of a wheel anyway. The Porsche Boxster 4 pot is only 2.4kg and ran on a stock disc, so it was a massive weight saving.

Each to their own when it comes to modifications; after all, 'tis your money, spend it how you want!

However... one thing that does make me shudder is seeing someone fake badging a car (for instance, M3 badges on a 318, etc). Again, spend your money how you want but it feels like the automotive equivalent of a fake watch. Saying that, replicas are probably a better comparison but I'm sure you get my gist.

    Oh mán...

And no it is not the same.
It is like putting ´chronograph´ on a ´daydate´.

Furthermore; so whát. By Jove, if thát irks you, you must have a hard life.

Most car manufacturers put a blurp of acronyms and model names with very farfetched associations on the cars for solely marketing reasons and people áre infuenced.
Like the full paragrah of advertising on the dial of a Rolex desk diver.
So what? If anything , it is hilarious so enjoy; both the blurp and it influencing buyers. Makes for a way more enjoyable life!!

I can’t think of anything sillier than almost every new Vauxhall having “turbo” on the back!

It’s not the seventies or eighties when a turbo meant it was a bit special and more powerful than your big standard car; practically every car on the road has one now, it’s nothing to shout about.

They’ll be shouting about fuel injection next!
