    Silly Cars

I was on the M62 near Manchester, when I saw a VW Golf MK5. It was in matt Olive Green. Very very low ride height. Massive wheels sticking out, but to top it off, he was sat in a race bucket seat with a roll cage.

    What makes people do this?

Have you seen any Silly cars?

Bright green Honda Civic with a huge whale tail spoiler and an exhaust you could drive up. The noise it was making at 5-10 mph was hilarious. The driver had the windows down without a care in the world.
Perhaps it’s a Manchester thing as it was last night in Stretford about 5 pm.

Subaru Impreza with the usual noisy exhaust, swerving from side to side like an F1 car to get his tyres hot! Obviously driving at 55mph on an A road wasn't enough for them. Just in case he suddenly had to go 'full race' I suppose!

They're not necessarily silly, just different.

Some might see this as silly...but it's top drawer Bosozoku stuff ...

    We're ALL different...thankfully.

Any car that can go over 85 mph, any car that costs more than the national average wage, any ‘performance’ car that mostly just sits in traffic jams while the owner see’s it as an extension of their personality.
All seem quite silly to me.

Says a collector and bodger of vintage watches. How do you spell hypocrite again? Oh, like that..

Figured people on a forum about watch collecting might keep a broader mind about people's hobbies. Apparently not, just the usual "I don't like this so it must be weird".

fwiw modding cars isn't my thing either, but I like cars in general and I like seeing the road full of something other than Nissan qashqui convoys and boring Audis. Each to their own.

Er.........that makes my Jaguar silly too. Mine has spent most of the last 7 years sitting on my driveway depreciating steadily, have to admit that’s a bit silly

I’m a reformed character regarding speed, I stick pretty closeto speed limits thesedays. I got caught going far too fast a few years ago on the M62 in the early hours of the morning, the copper who stopped me had needed approx 3 miles to catch me. Fortunately was clocked at the right side of the ton (94mph actually): when made aware if this fact, somewhat relievd to see 2 figures and not 3, my response was noteworthy:

‘ That doesn’t leave you much scope to use discretion’

Surprising how a one-sided discussion in the back of a police car focusses the mind!

Personally I’m glad to live in a country that does not prohibit this sort of individual expression, regardless of how daft the results may seem. Long may it continue.

One thought - was it also silly for Porsche to stick race seats, a cage, big wings and wheels on a 996 road car to give us the gt2 - I don’t think so.

Anything with fake exhaust pipes and/or fake exhaust sound. Like the SQ5 or the button you can press on an F-Type to make the exhaust crackle and pop. It's all from the ECU and very, very sad.

I too have a Ariel Atom, which someone can say its silly as it doesn't have a windscreen, doors, boot, heater, or a stereo and it's just sat in the factory in hibernation until the sun can come out..

So I can go do a track day.

Agree.......definitely a feature for the bellends in this world to play with!

Almost as bad is the stupid modifid turbo cars that make that silly hissing noise.........I call them hissing sids. Usually driven by young drivers wearing baseball caps.

Go and wash your mouth out, an Ariel atom is not silly, it’s very fit for purpose and a joy to own, it won’t depreciate which is also the opposite of silly lol

When I was looking for a silly car to replace my Alfa Brera I looked at the Renault Clio RS. It was too silly due to having an engine noise setting which had various racy sounds like F1 or motorbikey played through the speakers. I didn't like the DSG either. So I bought a silly 208 Gti in white which is cute, economical, £120 tax and very quick for a little thing.

I have nothing wrong with car customization; assuming it's safe(ish).

When I was doing my ADT many, MANY years ago there was a road copper there giving lessons and he was saying how he's 100% behind this sort of thing. Much better the youths spending their time and money on this sort of thing than hanging around outside the corner shop getting pi**ed and beating up old ladies. Another story was he had to pull over a couple of lads in a customized car for guess what.....? Sequential indicators which were, then, not legal - exactly like the ones on my new Audi! Must have taken some ingenuity to make these back in the 1970s. Of course, in reality, any modification of a car other than how it was supplied by the dealer is illegal because it fails type approval e.g. non-standard exhaust.

but véry much applaud the support of the treasury and technical development.

    * although strictly correct, there are surprisingly flexible provisions to obtain case specific exceptions and modifications on the technical specs.

Oh my, that sure pushed yoúr button ;-)

Imo loud speakers playing various selectable programmed/designed ´sporting´ sound tracks in the interior to give the driver the marketed experience is the ultimate silly but it treads on nobody elses rights/freedoms and sponsors the tax man so GOOD FOR THEM!

I feel this is rather special, sits just round the corner from me. Strangely outside a row of retirement bungalows, obviously granddad is down wi da kids. Note the fine batman artwork and numerous studs decorating the bodywork

    Come on guys!
Most here on this forum spend more on their wheels than strictly necessary for functional transport and without the restrictions imposed by the wife/gf would probably spend a lot more still.
Now ask yourself what is réally silly...

    Silly Cars

I love the little touches.... an M3 badge (wonky) on the back of some bland diesel beemer; Audi, or even Bentley alloys (or just Bentley centre caps?) on an Octavia or Golf, etc.

You are confusing differences in taste; opinion, with judgement.

When you ´think it silly´ you still pass judgement because ´silly´ is judgemental.

Out of curiousity; how much more than strictly needed for transport have yoú spent on your wheels and how much would you have spent without the resident female having a clue about it?
    Same applies to watches btw.

Non because the wheels came with the car. The wife keeps buying expensive saddles so she is not bothered as long as im having fun.

Now watches are important, Its a part of our "life", so, it must represent us with the best. Seiko or Patek. LOL

Does this apply to motorbike customisation?

Apparently not given the enthusiastic postings on some of the multiple recent bike threads on here. It seems to be acceptable to put a daft exhaust or some stickers on a bike but not a car!

I sometimes see a very nice rally-spec' Subaru, complete with big roll-cage.

Unfortunately, the bloke I've seen getting into it is a rotund over-fifty chap. He has to crawl in head-first & then basically roll around on the two front seats to get his legs & feet into position. Not a good look in Sainsbury's car park!
