    Rolex on Antiques roadshow.

Just caught the tail end of a piece just on. A young lad had a Rolex GMT pepsi and they reckoned it was worth between £15&£20k. Possibly £25k at auction. Surely not?

A pair of superb watches in original condition. The GMT was an early 60s gilt dial with chapter ring and small 24 hour hand.

and a valuation at Auction of £6k for the Heuer

I thought that he was way out, (too high) on both counts, but he is the expert

I didn't see the watches but if it's as described by Ken I wouldn't think the GMT estimate was way too high

Would the owner's name being engraved on the side have any effect on the value ?

Don’t believe all you see on these programmes re valuations ... it’s good for the wow factor but in reality they are top top prices achieved very rarely ... however some of the “experts” are more pron to reality on “estimates “ .
I speak from a position of “knowledge “on some of the auction tv show antics .
It makes the genuine antique auctioneers and values jobs very difficult as every customer use the excuse “ but on the antiques road show they said it was worth xxxx !”
Once again reality is somewhat different to speculation ... still it makes for easy viewing ... just keep a pinch of salt nearby on some of the valuations . There are of course always exceptions.

The gilt dial gmt was a peach absolutely beautiful. The autavia was also beautiful! Why did I sell mine 7 years ago for 2.5k!!!

Just watched this and I thought about 10 k for the GMT . The engraved side with his name was only small so would not put many buyers off .

I didnt know they made this watch in the early 60s with ' Pepsi' dial bezel. Always learn something on the Roadshow

Thanks. I'd have thought that GMT valuation is pretty close. I'd snap their hand off for 10K. I probably would for 15K as well

It needed a damn good clean between the lugs, there was a lot of DNA in there.

I watched this. Just a pair of scruffy old watches to my eyes, I’ll never understand the appeal.

    +1

Both would require sympathetic restoration so another £2k?

I thought 4-6K for the Heuer and 12-15K for the GMT - but it was a pointy crown guards too in super original condition as well as the RAF provenance of the owner who had flow spitfires etc...
so a creative auction house with some great marketing could get the prices they were valued at no doubt on a very good day with strong tail winds of collectors blowing their way

I'm with walkerwek on this to me just 2 mankey old watches that a few years ago no one would have given a second look the dial and hands on the Rolex look as though they have gone mouldy, glad I bought my shiny new looking Rolex for a fraction of the price.

I thought the Autavia looked nice but the GMT just looked knackered.

That said the prices seemed strong, amazing the lad was so clueless. Just 5 minutes on line would have given him a good guide.

Saw it too, they didn't look loved, rather just found in a drawer I 'wonder what they are worth'...The Heuer didn't even have a strap and the rolex was filthy. Never the less both looked very original. Price wise I just think it shows how silly the investment market has become. A lovely new Daytona for 9 grand seems a bargain now.

Didn't think the watches were in that a good condition to command the values quoted by the expert.

I guess real collectors would still paid a premium nowadays!
