Two I think I’d really struggle. For a while now I’ve thought about this the OPs other thread on consolidation helped me think more. I came to the perfect trio for me..

Then a Rolex Pepsi as my GMT ..
So I started to save and look for the missing part the GMT but as per normal the watch business throws you a spanner in the works! There is no way now I could let the 2254 go I just enjoy it too much!
I reckon if I got the GMT I’d be happy with 4 the three listed above and the 2254 as beater and holidays.
I guess then in answer no I couldn’t do 2.

I wore my Sinn U2 for over ten years straight as my only "good" watch. I still wear it daily for work, but my Sinn U1000 is getting some wrist time too.
My Sinn 103 hasn't been worn for around 8 months and my Stowa Klassic 90th Anniversary hasn't been worn for months now.
I could easily go back to just two watches as I think this is the minimum to allow for servicing.
I should be going to Kenya soon for work and while I know my Sinn U2 can tackle any terrain and environment (as it already has done)... its not immune to some bastard trying to steal it from me.... so I might just buy a cheap Casio or some other "Field watch" .
I could not do it, my tastes and preferences are somewhat fluid and seem to ebb and flow. Its a bit like choosing your top ten albums, or desert island discs, it depends on mood and recent listening experience which both influence your choices. Given all of that, there are two watches that I love and have a lot of memories tied up in so I could not sell those, so I am at two before I chose. Its an impossible ask!

I would keep my (modified) Sub and a Seiko kinetic beater for mountain biking, camping, brawling etc.
Having more and different watches gives me pleasure but I think I could find a way to survive without them.

I was between my 16710 and the Ebel chrono but I chose the chrono. One Rolex is enough and that must be the Dweller. I could go anywhere with that watch.
I could get down to and stick at two watches no problem. When life zigged when I was expecting it to zag a couple of years ago I looked at my collection in a new light and offloaded some. I tend to wear three watches almost exclusively now and could easily drop one.
I reckon I could manage it, but I’m glad I don’t have to.
If it was from my current box, I’d probably have to pick my Zenith EP 1969 and my Sinn 857 UTC.
If it was a case of sell whatever you like and buy or keep two with the proceeds, I’d probably try to raise enough for a Rolex GMT II and then have to figure out #2 with whatever I have left. Probably a G-Shock!
I could easily do it but I would need to make the conscious decision to stop taking an interest in watches and spend my time on other things. I would find this a fairly monotonous and frustrating pastime if I couldn’t buy new watches.
While I’m in a “not fussed about watches” phase I’ll easily wear the same watch for months without a second thought.

Interesting enough thing to wonder about in theory but I honestly don’t know why you’d bother in real life.
Because, at heart, I seem to be a bit of a Puritan. I like ‘things’, but at the same time believe ‘less is more.’ I think psychiatrists call this ‘cognitive dissonance.’ I both want stuff and don’t want it , at the same time.
I’m not alone in this dilemma.
Which is fine, but to not be allowed to change the watches if you felt sufficiently strongly about it in future? That’s just daft.
That poses an interesting question. Is this really about number of watches, or the value of those watches. Is having one expensive time piece really having less stuff than three or four (what we would call) midrange watches that have a lower value?
I don’t think I could do two only. If I had too then I think it would BLNR (dressy, plenty of WR, date, nice bracelet, GMT) and Speedmaster on NATO/leather. I couldn’t part with my Reverso, and that would be a great 3 watch collection with a Seiko diver as a beater. That’s 4 as my realistic minimum...

No real interest in anything else and have always had variants of sub/dweller and ROO/RO in stash as they're clear favourites so it wouldn't be a hardship.

Interesting. You say you pretend Quartz don’t count. Is that down to the value of them? If so, could you do as you say and keep the perfect 2 watch combination and yet still have the fun of a couple of lower end autos ? There is a massive world of them to explore.

It’s because what drew me to the hobby were those intricate, lovely, mechanical designs. Miniature engineering at it’s best, drawing on centuries of refinement. Quartz is fabulous electrical engineering, but it’s just not ‘romantic.’ To me anyway.
So what draws you to the extra quartz watches?

Thinking from my current collection, the best three watch selection might be
Chopard Chrono One, Rolex 1680, G-shock 5600.
But that would leave me without a Seiko. I don't think I could go to three without really regretting getting rid of the 6139, so no, not possible for me. 4 watches, maybe I could do. Big Maybe.

Correct, I do still currently own 2 Panerai but can't remember the last time I wore one. I have decided I prefer 40mm watches and less now and the slimmer the better.
I'm thinking I could manage with one since wearing my Speedmaster non stop from October last year, do I really need another watch, other than a beater ?
