When you take pictures close-up, the depth of field is very narrow - often no more than a couple of mm, depending on the magnification and aperture used to take the shot.
Focus stacking enables the photographer to take multiple images, moving the camera slightly each time either forwards or backwards to alter the plane of focus. These images are then combined in photoshop or other applications to create a composite image which has better front-to-back sharpness.
