Thread: IWC Mark XII

    IWC Mark XII

A bit of an unscheduled incoming yesterday, a '96 vintage Mk XII. This is a watch I've admired for some time - an aquaintance had one around ten years ago, probably still has as he's a one watch guy. A good all-rounder, discreet at 36 mm. Seems to be running at +2.5/day, which is obviously pretty good. No shortage of WABI, the bezel and caseback are covered in small scratches and dings, but that's fine with me. Trit lume has gone a nice shade of custard.

I’d love one of those. They’re pretty rare these days. I’m wearing an XV that I bought last year. They’re real quality. There was an XV on sale here recently with bracelet, box and papers.

Very, very nice! I had the opportunity to pick one up a couple of years ago and occasionally kick myself for not doing so!

Looks stunning, congrats. I was annoyed that I missed the Mark XV on sc the other day, beautiful designs.

+1 and looking forward to local AD getting stock in

If only the XII was bigger than 36mm I'd add one to my collection

It's a matter of personal taste of course, but I think the size is just great

No one was interested in the one I bought from SC,I mentioned it a few times when people said they wanted one.
It was serviced and in excellent condition as good as you are likely to find,it’s not available now.
36mm is a good size for this watch.

I remember it well. A good price too.

About 2.2 to 3.8k, quite a range. Mine was very much towards the lower end of that range.

Wow, great lineup! The Big Pilot is way too big for me, but the others are really nice.

Yes, a great movement. I've seen photos of IWC's iteration of it, and it is rather utilitarian in finish, but a solid caseback solves that.

I had a big pilot. Way to big for me but I couldn't care less, it was so nice I was just happy to look at the dial.
Contratulations on a stunning watch OP. Love it

Gorgeous. I was talking about mine with another TZer just today... I miss it.

Thanks for all the nice comments. This is a very charming watch, I'm very chuffed. It strikes me as very versatile and very low-key.

A lovely watch, have you tried it on the bracelet? Although I keep mine on a leather strap it does look quite good on its original bracelet.

  21. #21
No, the bracelet looks great, but none were on offer at the low price I paid.

If you could only ever own one watch at a reasonable price, surely that that would be top of the list.

    Perfect in every way really.

Would love to get my hands on one. Only problem is I probably wouldn't take it off.

That's the Tribute to mark xi though isn't it. The mark xi came out in 1948 so I expect that's why there's 1948 pieces. The mark xi on my 5 watch arm shot is a 1948 issue.

I'd really like the beads of rice bracelet but I've only ever seen one on sale separately & it was $1000.

Agree looks low key but stunning nonetheless

+4 seconds in 48 hours, so far. Very impressive for a 22 year old watch which (from the state of the bezel) has clearly seen heavy use, but still has its original dial and handset, and original crown, which suggests that it may never have had a full factory overhaul. Many other examples I saw had service luminova dials, hands and/or crowns.

I'm guessing any decent watchmaker can service the JLC 889?

The (bricks and mortar) seller said the usual "serviced by our in-house watchmaker", FWIW.

Brendan Hoey (Webwatchmaker here) will do a great job on it when it’s needed. He serviced my XV last year and since then it runs at less than plus one second per day.

Great. Less that one sec per day is exceptional.

I'm getting a timegrapher fairly soon, so I'll check it over using that.

I love mine. I find the size perfect, the newer IWCs are too big and blingy for me.

Very nice. I love the squared-off hour hand, not something I've seen on any other brands (homages aside).

Dial size is about the same as a 40mm Submariner, so it doesn't seem small.

That all started on the mark xi, where it's even more pronounced. The idea was to make the hour & minute hands obviously different when the device was being used for navigation. I've heard a story that a pilot ordered that the hour hand on his early prototype mark xi be literally cut short after he'd mistaken the hour hand for the minute hand during flight, & that the resultant hand configuration was adopted for the mark xi's.
