Thoughts on a Grand Seiko SGBA259/SBGA211

I’ve just tried one, in fact it was 2, but the only difference was the gold on one of them.

They fitted perfectly and were a really good price. Adored the dial and I’m extremely tempted by them, but something’s telling me not to buy one.

    What’s everybody’s thoughts on them?

The gold looks terrible in that picture, but having seen it in real life it's a stunner. That said if probably still have the non-gold.

I haven't regretted buying my GS. It's now, pretty much, my only watch and I love it.

That power reserve kills it for me. If it must have one, stick it on the back, not on the dial!

I was in the Seiko boutique last month. Was saying I was tempted by a spring drive and was told to ‘wait for later this year’ as GS will be bringing out a number of new ones, including ltd editions. Apparently this year will be ‘spring drive year’.

I think the Snowflake is a modern classic and sized perfectly at 41mm. I had one for a while and sold it as I wanted to try some other GS but I think I will come back to one at some point. I am not so sure on the gold version as I loved the blued second hand and the impeccable finish of the hands on the original version and would miss that blue second hand sweeping the dial smoothly.

As for waiting, GS is constantly releasing LE's, thats their strategy to build brand awareness and it is certainly working. I don't know what you would be waiting for exactly.

    Cheers

As I was saying, they are focusing on SD this year specifically.

Now I’m not a gold person at all but the gold snowflake is jumping out at me, I think that would look super classy on the wrist with lots of different reflective surfaces shimmering in the light..

Saying that I still prefer the full stainless..

It seems that they have done plenty of SD LE's but if they are planning to focus on SD for 2019 who knows what they might come up with. I haven't been attracted to many of the LE's to follow too closely.

I don’t think it’s just LEs but he seemed quite excited about what was coming. Guess we’ll see in good time

Neither! I like GS’s, but unfortunately I have no love for snowflake dials.

I don't have a problem with gold details on a SS watch, but I think when you see them side by side I would pick the full Steel version.

The blue hand is one of the things that stands out to me.

I’m going back later for another look and to see if they can tempt me to part with my cash.

Just do it. Lovely watches and revered design for a reason. Let us know how you get on!

Buy it!!! Lovely watches, I have just tried both of these on at the grand Seiko boutique in New York they are amazing watches..
I also tried the blue faced ltd US edition which was fabulous, in fact if the prices weren't so crazy here I'd have bought it!!

Titanium-only (is the bi-metal steel or Ti?) version all day, for me - as others have said, it's a classic. The Ti makes it supremely comfortable to wear, the dial is just gorgeous and details like the blued seconds hand make it (to me at least) endlessly enjoyable to look at. It's my first (and so far only) Spring Drive watch and has me completely sold on the technology and on GS' aesthetic.

I'd go for the SBGA211 as its the one watch that GS are well known for. Beautiful dial and the titanium makes it supremely light and comfortable.

If you can wait, you do see them popping up here on SC once in a while.

Standard blue hand version for me, lovely watch but would prefer it in steel.

I actually really like the gold option. I've had the "standard" Snowflake for a couple of years but would consider a trade to the gold for a little more exclusivity dare I say...

Yellow Snow is never a good look!

I love my classic version. The blue second hand is mesmerising to watch.

Same for me. It’s put me off a lot of Spring Drive watches - I’m fairly sure I’d have bought more than the handful I have over the years if they didn’t have the feature on the dial.

Other than that, I think it’s a great looking watch.
It's just a matter of time...

I love the dials on these. In the pic the gold looks a bit tacky (I've not seen one in the metal) but the blue hands look pure class!

Well......it looks like it hasn’t worked out for me, which is a bit of a shame.

The watch was a bargain, but it would have had to be pre-ordered and then shipped out to me later in the month. I really wanted to pick it up and take it home with me.

I did however pick up a samurai which I will post up on the incoming thread, and I’m also tempted by a golden turtle that I’ve seen here.

You've certainly gone from one extreme end of the spectrum to the other on that....
