Hi depends on how you are motivated, Peleton is the latest development of rollers->turbo trainers-> Zwift now interactive riding. I know cyclists who swear by static training and have embraced power meters and really benefited from early season in developing their summer rides. Often going out and bagging a few european cols.

Yes the bikes are expensive, but try using a cheap turbo and you will quickly tire.

From my point I found turbo training boring and quickly lost interest, however the months of Jan to March are hopless months if you want to ride on the road due to weather and light. So if Peleton hits the spot and suits your lifestyle I would say try it.

£2k plus £39 a month would get you a lot of personal training or small group sessions out in the real world!

Perfect for the agoraphobic who loves to drench himself in his own sweat whilst getting marginally better at cycling nowhere

Start looking for a (second hand) Concept II. Preferable over a bike trainer. Point is that a lot of people don't 'master' a proper rowing technique. Concept II is still market leader, but I'm impressed by the RP3 rowing machine!

We bought an almost brand new water rower from e?Bay over summer for £450 - just put music/tv on and go for it.

I cycle throughout winter and supplement the missed days with wattbike sessions organised by the cycle club
But if the ads for peloton are anything to go by I’d last 5-10mins before throwing something at the screen.

You could try looking for a local spin or wattbike class and give that a go first.

Have a friend who swears by his turbo trainer and Zwift. He does a fair distance every week on it and if his speed now when he comes mountain biking is anything to go by then he's on to a winner. Just can't picture myself sitting on it for 3 odd hours a go like he does though. To be fair though he did come 3rd in the Fred a few years back and used to rid semi pro so he's a bit addicted🤣

The peleton trainers are not great... but if you come from a more exercise class / spin experience then their virtual classes are excellent. I have a pal who is right into this... but if your background and aspirations are more towards proper cycling on a real bike at some point then Zwift and any good turbo is the way to go. Cheaper, more rewarding and ever expanding...

If you get a treadmill and endless pool as well, you can go from pool to bike to treadmill and do a whole triathlon without going anywhere, brilliant!

Friend of mine has one - certainly hammers it - loves it

It looks costly I guess - but then so are watches

We have a local council based leisure centre which costs £26 pm pp. You can do any number of classes and atm I do three spins a week minimum. I find it more motivating to attend a live class.

Did you get one of these in the end?

Debating one myself. A neighbour has one and loves it. I love spinning but struggle to get on classes at my local gym (always full as soon as booking opens). I ride regularly on my MTB's but am a bit of a fairweather rider. Not interested in rowing machines or similar, as I say, am a fan of spinning.

The cost seems excessive but then again, my MTB's weren't cheap either. Have had a couple of times recently where I've not been able to get out but thought if i had this, I'd be doing a live or on demand class.

If you can afford it and think you will use it then go for it.

I couldnt be bothered with the faffing about with online classes. I've got a concept 2 rower and will jump on it and do 6 x 500m sprints and i'm done.

I like the rowing machine though and some people hate it, like senwar above.

If it was me i'd probably buy a concept bikeerg rather than a peloton, but then again it's because of the simplicity of getting on and doing some sprints and being done. After that i would be looking at a Rogue Echo, but my needs are probably different than yours and i couldn't be bothered sitting on a bike doing a spin class for 45 minutes.

Edit: just realised i am replying to an old post.

Have you got a bike already? Just get an erg indoor trainer and a trainer road subscription. Much, much cheaper!

I get worn out just watching the adverts, I know a guy who cycles a lot and does iron man comps, in the really bad weather he has some kind of turbo thingy that he hooks a bike to, £400 ish it was, he’s happy with that rather than buying a static bike a £2000? that he can’t take outside.
His idea of fun is 100 miles or so on a Saturday on the bike, aye right, I do that in the car with roof down for fresh air.

I’m not keen on bike trainers. Had a few in the past and never done anything for me. Have looked at the smart direct drive ones but as I say not keen.

Just done a class via the app in my gym. Tried to do the live class but connection kept dropping (signal not brill in gym) but managed to do an on demand one and thought it was great to be honest. Not as cheesy as I expected. Going to go with the app trial for the next 2 weeks and see how I think it is

We have a few of them in the office gym. Work fine and much more engaging than a standard piece of cardio at the gym.

Would never pay for one myself though. At the moment I bought a years membership for puregym for £180 and get all the classes for free. It's not for everyone but even a top end gym with classes to suit any time would be less than the peloton and is much more motivating.

Also have to question what happens if they go bust at some point, could just end up with a very expensive basic spin bike.

The wife likes spinning so I bought a decent spin bike and she uses the peloton app through our Apple TV, I’ve had a few goes and aside from the actual number resistance they tell you in the classes which I just went by feel. Decent spin bike from eBay cost me £250 (used twice and then became a clothes horse lol) and the peloton app is £20 a month rather than the £40 a month if you spend 2k one of their bikes. It’s not my thing but the few goes I’ve had have been very enjoyable and the wife really likes it so my thrift way maybe a cheap way for you, I just didn’t want to spend 2k on something that becomes a clothes horse in 6 months time if she’s wants the proper one at some point fair play if it’s getting used.

    Edit to add

Yeah the bust issue does concern.

I get free classes at my current gym. But spinning books up well in advance annoyingly (literally minutes within opening). I went down today and tried the available bikes with the app and was really impressed. As someone who has done spinning for a number of years I found the experience really good.

I bought a spin bike similar to this from a gym that was replacing all its bikes.

It's a good, solid workhorse that's easy enough to maintain. Cost me a couple of hundred, if that.

I'm a big fan of the Les Mills spin classes, they have RPM (45 min regular spin class) and Sprint (30 min HIIT class). I take the classes at my local gym, but the instructors are unreliable and when they don't turn up, which is far more often than I think acceptable, the class is cancelled--there are never subs. So I made it my business to get hold of some of the 'virtual' RPM and Sprint classes, put them on my iPod and I use them with headphones when the instructors go AWOL. I notice no difference in terms of motivation or how hard I work vs. a live class.

It think Les Mills offers an at-home subscription service for these virtual classes, so that's an alternative to Peloton if you get hold of a spin bike.

Obviously I’ve not used one of their actual bikes but I can’t see what would be worth the extra to buy one of theirs vs the app on an iPad or Apple TV not to mention the extra £20 a month subscription for what’s essentially the same experience. The wife is happy with the setup so unless she suddenly decides she wants/needs the full thing then we won’t be buying one, I think the way people justify the cost is the interest free finance of circa £100 a month rather than the £2.5k outlay in one lump and if a couple of you in the family are using it then the value is better. Check out eBay for spin bikes I’m sure you’ll find a bargain or wait until February when loads are selling off failed New Years resolutions which is what ours was lol.

That’s very similar to the one we got

I would be very surprised if Peloton survive another 12 months. Their losses and cash burn are simply too high.

When I were a lad, spin classes were all the rage and I could be found most nights partaking in a sweaty session. At the back taking in the view of all those Lycra clad ladies asses. You won’t get that view with Peleton however there was a hot blonde instructor in one of the earlier FB advert videos.

I've recently got one of these and first impressions are that its great!
Been doing spin classes in my local gym for about 2 years and gradually the number of classes have been decreasing. Couple that with shift work and its lucky if I can attend any more than 1 class a week.
The forte of Peloton is I can attend any class at any point during the day. Couldnt sleep this morning so straight on the Peloton for a quick work out.
My wife also uses it, and as the kids get slightly older Ive no doubt they will as well. Thus cutting the cost of a gym to a certain extent.
Already following a member on here but if there's anyone else who has one shout up as it would be good to give each other a bit of encouragement/competition.

Join the gym and get involved in their spin classes..

After my Ibiza holiday, returned Oct 12th 2019 and 15st 11Lbs,I decided I needed to blitz the cardio, spin class being my preference as I always loved the fast results,(if you put the effort in).
Went this morning and after posting this going back to do another 1.5hrs,I'm now 15st 1/4Lbs.

My job allows me plenty time to be @ the gym thru winter,so I take advantage.

Id never have the same drive at home, and just behind me in the conservatory sits an unused spin bike!!.

This kind of statement does frustrate me (sorry, not a dig at you specifically).

I'm a member of my local gym, will continue to go (and have been at lunchtime today) and actually got a Peloton last Friday - its not to replace the gym for me anyway, its an additional exercise option. I'm also having weekly PT sessions

As it is, I can't get on every spin class due to it filling up, so this is a great option for me. As the post above, my first impression of the machine is fantastic. Its the benefit of having immediate access at all times. Also, I don't want to go to the gym for just 30 minutes (if I've got ready and gone, I want to spend at least an hour there). But having the option of just doing 30 minutes HIIT at home is a real motivation and boost. My goal at the moment is 1x PT, 2x gym and 3x Peloton sessions a week. Any more would be a bonus (i.e. I may do 2x Peloton classes on a single day)

How it feels in 6 months is a different matter but I'm extremely happy with my purchase at the moment - other than my mrs saying I need to soundproof the garage as she says it sounds like I'm enjoying a porn film or something in there given the weird noises I'm making!

Apologies for the thread resurrection but I was wondering how you were getting on with your Peloton bike/classes? I'm a keen spinner in the gym and would normally do 3/4 hours a week however since the gyms are closed I'm really struggling to find some other exercise I actually like doing. I went for a run last week and my legs have only started feeling normal again now. The price does look expensive but Im starting to justify it with man maths!

Mrs Bert and I got one in November, we love it, I'm on it 5 or 6 days a week, whereas I never made it to the gym more than 3 days, on a very good week. I've never felt as fit and healthy.

Thanks for that which is good to hear. I'm normally really bad with home exercise as I much prefer to go to the gym do the workout and then come home so wondering whether I'l use it when the gyms reopen.

I’ve never been motivated to do anything at home, but this is different. I do a spinning class, then some strength training, just basic stuff with dumb bells, then a bit of stretching or yoga, it’s a great way to spend an hour or so at this stressful time.

Thanks again and I hope I would be the same. Now if only I could get one on the ride to work scheme now that I'm working from home!

You'll probably struggle to find one available, given the current lockdown, but I'd strongly recommend a Wattbike Atom if you fancy indoor bike training.

I've had one for a few weeks and think it's great (enjoy would be too strong a word!) The Atom is a 'smart' trainer, so it can vary the resistance. I use it with an app called Full-Gaz, which means that on dark, wet January nights I could cycle up sunlit European cols (watching the video on the TV or iPad in front of me) with the resistance varying with the gradient in real time.

This morning I cycled up Sa Calobra (Coll del Reis) in Majorca, something I don't imagine I'll be able to do for real for many months now.

    Best wishes,
    Martyn.

No problem - and see you've had a few replies already.

I love mine. Find it fantastic. It motivates me to do extra. I use it quite a lot. Since getting it on 1st November I've done 106 rides on the bike and other class types via app - 15 treadmill runs, 2 cardio classes, 2 strength and 2 stretching. I'll be doing more app stuff as this lockdown continues via streaming to my telly too.

They set monthly challenges - eg ride the bike 5 times get a virtual bronze, 10, silver, 15 gold. I've done Gold every month since it started. Just joined one for April which is a class (so on bike or app) every day. Currently 2139 mins down in the annual challenge too (2000, 3000 or 5000 mins over the year)

The bike and screen setup is very intuitive, very immersive and bloody hard. I used to spin quite a bit but have never sweat like this. The live stats are fantastic. Given where we are now, I got one at the right time.

It's helped my cycling power and strength and there's probably been 2/3 times max I didn't want to do a class but did and was glad I did. I usually do 30 min ones, prefer live classes (which are still running) but have frequently done the 45 mins ones too. Favourite instructors are Ben Aldiss & Alex Troussant. A couple are OTT but fun to be fair. There has only been one occasion when I couldn't be bothered to do a class. In 5 months, that's good going. I travel a bit with work but have still been able to fit in a good schedule. I try and do classes at 12 or 5:30 if at home and do one on a Sunday (usually do Boot Camp at the gym Saturday). I have tried to do a class both before and after a ride or boot camp but I'm wiped. So it's usually one or the other.

I did look back at the thread myself earlier this week but I said I'd see how it was in 6 months and I'm only on 5 so was going to wait but happy to give VERY positive feedback on it. Oh and I got my Peloton century club t-shirt last week which came within 2 days despite the current issues (thought it would be a while to be honest). Just a nice little boost.

Alongside this I have continued to go to the gym and have PT plus cycle. I can't lose weight for some reason despite all this (has to be diet) but my energy, fitness and strength have improved massively. Yes it's expensive, yes there's a monthly fee but at the moment, exactly 5 months in, it feels like a fantastic purchase and great value

No horse in this race as I row indoors and cycle outside. But was having a poke around the Peloton sit out of idle curiosity and saw the following:

” I purchased my Bike on a financing plan before 06/02/2020 and my agreement states that my purchase is subject to 18.9% APR, is this true?
Our financing product has recently changed. If you purchased the Bike on or before 06/02/2020, your balance is subject to 18.9% APR if you miss payments or choose to pay the minimum payment. To avoid missing payments, you can set up automatic recurring payments via the Klarna App or web portal.”

Struck me as a bit shoddy to say pre Corvid-19 lockdown customers tough, post you can have interest free credit to help boot sales even more.
Even a gesture of offering the all access to interest paying customers would be a nice gesture.

Many thanks for taking the time to reply so comprehensively and good to hear that you're getting the most from it too. I very much like the idea of the classes/instructors as motivation rather than just doing my own thing on a bike and which is why I go to spinning classes anyway. I did go on their website today and found out that even if I did buy one today it wouldn't be delivered for 4-6 weeks anyway so you definitely did get one at the right time. I am still tempted though.

The frustration, and the only reason I haven’t bought one, is the inability to put any other feed through the screen. So you can’t watch TV you can’t use another cycling app, it’s just very restrictive for something so expensive. Stuck forking out £40 quid a month ad infinitum or the thing effectively becomes a very expensive clothes horse.

I didn't realise the per month was so much! Incredible business model really - fork out a couple a grand to have the privilege of owning one. Yet you still need to pay £40 a month to actually use. Remarkable.

Sorry but that’s such a lazy comment (expensive clothes horse) - up there with ‘just go to the gym’. People who have replied on here have said how much they are being used. If people spend that amount of money on one and don’t use them then the system isn’t the right one for them.

You’re obviously not the target market. Why do you need to put TV or another cycling app on something that has a USP is immersive training through its own app/setup. The whole use of Peloton is the interactive nature of stats, live feedback, visible training. Put TV on and you aren’t using or having a need for Peloton. Hence the not the target market comment.

£39 a month for 20+ classes (in my own example) is great value. I based my initial class on using it 13 times a month minimum seeing each class as £3 each. As I’ve said I use it a lot. And if I could hook up TV or another app. I wouldn’t. I’d have bought something else.

In fact it's like saying you want to buy an iphone but won't because you can't put Android on it.

This gets said a lot as a reply - but the irony of such comments on a forum where people spend thousands on watches and some thousands OVER RRP.

Using the phone analogy again - you buy a phone and pay monthly for a service. You pay for the technology to provide you with the service.

Heck I’m well into fitness - I probably spend close to £200 a month with sports, gym etc. So if it works for you, then GREAT!

However you totally miss my point. I cannot get my head around the total and absolute locked in nature of the product. That is my issue.

At least with a mobile I have a choice between technologies and carriers. Here I have a proprietary equipment and service. If I decide I want another service, tough luck. Selling the bike I guess is an option, but likely a pricey loss. That’s my issue.

But you DO have a choice - that's what I'm saying. You don't 'have' to buy this. Nordicktrack, Echelon both do smart bikes. Wattbike (which I very nearly bought instead), Kickr, others that use Zwift.

I used the phone analogy as I have an iphone. Totally locked in to Apple. Same kind of thing. People criticise how much that costs - but for many it's a fantastic option. As is this.

And as for locked in - you can hack the unit if you want (so like jailbreaking an iphone). I don't see the need - but after all it's just a big android tablet.

Anyway, for me, this is a fantastic bit of kit - also not an alternative. Alongside my gym membership and my mountain bikes, it's a monthly spend I'm happy to pay. I was interested to see how I did in the summer months (when I want to be out on the MTB more) but at the moment, that may be a bit of a dream!
