OP - interesting thread! Great Seiko is a dogs dinner

Did anyone here choose an auto over a quartz or vice versa at the point this was all kicking off??? I would have been allured by the tech I’m sure! I was one of the first kids in my school to have a digital watch in the 70’s and I remember crowds of kids want to take a peak at the new wizardry…. I was king of the school for a week!

As many others have said JPE, this is a fascinating insight into a particular moment in watch history. Thank you for sharing and keep it up!

Skyman’s comment was childish and inappropriate - just ignore the troll.

To be fair, that Seiko was pretty significant at the time, it’s a 0634-5019 , the worlds first lcd chronograph. I’ve had a fair few over the years, really nice watches.

I think the post was interesting and worthwhile, thanks for posting.

Ignore Skyman, most of us do.

Those of us old enough can remember the impact of digital/quartz technology.

The forum needs more posts like this and for those that find these posts 'pointless', perhaps TZ-UK is not the place for you.

It is the spirit that matters not pumped up ego driven dross.

I'm on the interesting side of the fence. I always find old adverts, especially with prices (and gratuitous sexism), fascinating.

Interesting thread. And the afters is one of the reasons I hardly post anything these days. It seems the most innocent of musings can't avoid someone jumping down your throat. The last time I dared to say that cheap watches in the 60's were vulnerable to water ingress I attracted a clanging grid who just used it as an excuse to go on an ego trip.

Same here and taking turns to play the game on it. You had to match the numbers scrolling on the screen to make them disappear before they reached the edge. You don't get that with a Speedmaster

Hopefully not to take this off topic but that is sublime - how come the dial text reads as it does, “To the King”?
A bit like the modern Royal Warrants, just an indication that the company would have supplied items to the Royal household.

I loved the ad posted by the OP. Not just for nostalgia purposes but it reflects the longstanding value of a good Swiss watch.

The quartz digital on the right is nowhere near intrinsically valuable as the omega is today.

The price of the quartz at the time equalled the retail price of the mechanical. I think it's comparative to today's smart watches although not as equalled in today's retail price in a smart watch vs omega . It just proves little technological marvels at points of time don't really compete longstanding to a decent mechanical.

I love seeing old sales ads for watches especially those online Argos, index back catalogues

I'm not a favouring one over the other as I own g shocks but it's just obvious to see that sometimes technologies sort of become redundant in perceived value. Then again where is huertecilla ?
He would take that digital over the mechanical any day !

I recognise that smiths logo !

Ooh!!! Intrinsic value of a Swiss mechanical watch - now there's a statement! Perceived value, certainly. What the intrinsic value might be is far more arguable.

It is fascinating to see watch adverts and the change in pricing from decades ago. I wonder how today's watch ads/ pricing will be viewed in 40 years time. No doubt the Speedmaster with still be in production.

Great thread OP. A bit before my time but a great comparison and contrast.

It takes me back to when I got a calculator watch in the early 80s and I remember having much fun typing on it in lessons and the playground.

Sad to say that as a young teenager, at the time of this add, I would have much preferred the new technology of the Seiko. I remember looking at my dad's old 'wide up' watch, can't remember what it was, and thinking how dated it was compaired to my sparkling new LED watch. Seems really strange looking back!

Of course, this means that as the materials become more exotic, the watches will also become more expensive to purchase and look after. An important point to bear in mind is that Swiss watches will retain an intrinsic value that most luxury watches will have regardless of advancing technology like the smartwatch.

Certainly more interesting than "what sexual favours do I offer my AD to let me buy a watch from him?" threads...

I can vaguely remember quartz watches being expensive, compared to mechanical ones, but then that was before a mechanical watch became a symbol of people's perceived importance and their price still bore some relation to their cost of manufacturer...

I never liked digital watches, same as I hated Chopper bikes, even as a kid.

My parents bought me a bike when I was 9 and I asked for a racer, they kept saying "You can have a Chopper if you want", sure I'd have been a cool kid, but I'd have had a shit bike, so I got the racer.instead!

This old ad shows how bad things used to be...

There’s another pointless thread here that may be of interest (from last year):

Plenty of Rolex ads so something for everyone :-)

I’m off to look for a Seiko Pogue... who says advertising doesn’t work?!

I've actually got a #6 Sicura (Breitling!) Globetrotter! I've a Leica 3 also, an old ad I saw from 1937 for them had them at about £45 or so much a week on the drip. Worked out around £3,500 in today's.

Old ad wise, I....a'hem, came across a 60s Playboy recently. Hardly any titty surprisingly but some cracking ads for 'slacks' & suchlike.

Great thread - thanks for posting. My parents bought me a watch for my 18th birthday in 1975. I wanted a digital watch but not one with red LCD digits, I liked the type that the Seiko has in the advert as that was fairly different at the time. Can't remember what make it was but it had a proper heavy bracelet and I remember the price - exactly £80 which wasn’t cheap at the time. I haven’t a clue what happened to it but I think I stopped wearing it when the battery died.

Precisely the point. The era when people cared about performance is now over. Nowadays you don't even need a watch so watchmakers sell something else. Like mechanical virtuosities or resale value. Better doesn't matter anymore. Ah the good old days.
