Think that's a bit unfair tbh. The first Apple Mac probably looks the same.
Everyone has heard stories about the Swiss watch industry and its problems during the "quartz revolution".
I knew it was bad but never realized it was THIS bad.
Think that's a bit unfair tbh. The first Apple Mac probably looks the same.
Good luck everybody. Have a good one.
Yes I'm aware that the first digital watches were expensive.
But it's still shocking. I wish I had a time machine. :)
Everyone was hung up on the tech of quartz but seriously look at them visually, the Speedy is a thing of beauty where as the CX003 reminds me of Maximilian from the Black Hole.
Pointless thread.
When I shared an article from my website someone said that I shouldn't promote my 100% non-profit watch articles in a watch forum.
Fine. I won't share any articles here anymore.
Now this is "pointless" too.
Is this a watch forum or something else? What have I done to annoy you guys that much? Is it because I'm not from the UK?
Just let me know and I'll take my f...cking coat.
Perhaps you just need to depart gracefully.
So what is the equivalent of £158 in whatever year the ad was from in today's money? And how much do they charge for the Omega??
Ironic that the modern equivalents of the Seiko digital have decreased in absolute terms 90%, and even more in equivalent value. I guess those contemplating this trendy new Seiko wouldn't be impressed to know that in the future you could buy something similar (or better!) for a tenner!
As has already been said, if only I had a timemachine! Not sure why the op has attracted snide comments. I’d rather read posts like this than some of the nonsense that gets posted on here.
It’s just the way it is on here for some reason, very similar to pistonheads I find.
I always like to reply to people as if I were talking to them in real life but on here it does seem a different tone and I guess it was set a long time ago and it seems to have stuck with a lot of people. You should be used to it by now given your join date!
The Seiko looks like a microwave welded to a bracelet
Thanks for sharing, that was good to see. Reminder of how much things can change from what we think is obvious today! Maybe with younger generations growing up without the wish for a watch, the brands we covet today will be far less in demand.
Thank you for posting.
I am not sure how old this advert is but if I had to guess, mid 70s judging by the Omega bracelet (I could be wrong). It is amazing to see that the Omega seems almost identical to the current one.
Just had a quick search, if any of the Seiko's have survived you would double or treble your money, a surviving Speedmaster, 30 - 40 times the original cost
Love the ad, I have saved it, I often wonder how many great watches where thrown out when the digitals first hit the market ?
ps: In the mid 70s £158 was quite a bit more than a weeks wages for me as an engineer.
So... do all pointless threads on TZUK only relate to Rolex, or is it just that, as pointless threads go, those relating to Rolex are less interesting than those pointless threads relating to other brands?
Or... to put it another way, I guess what you were trying to say is that this thread is of "more interest than another pointless thread", whatever that may be about, a sentiment with which I would wholeheartedly agree.
Interesting post JPE ignore those with nothing constructive to say. I found the comparative pricing informative.

Spot on. 😊
Quite amazing. I would be interested to know the exact date of this advert. Thanks for posting. Ignore the bile from usual suspects.

Love these time capsules. Thanks!
Anyone have any others?
Interesting post. Certainly a far cry from today's pricing and just shows - whether it's an automatic watch today or a quartz watch back then - the prices charged have much to do with the way they are marketed and thus perceived by the buying public.
To the OP, l echo the other posters who urge you to ignore the negative comments. They are not in any way constructive, informed or informative.
Quartz v. Mechanical is a bit like Vinyl v. CD Market forces, technological advancements, industry promotion, fashions, desire to have the latest shiny toy, etc. We all have choices; I have both in watches and music.
Love the ad. btw - thanks to OP
Many thanks for posting, it's always interesting to look back and see how things have moved on / changed,
"Once is happenstance. Twice is coincidence. The third time it's enemy action."
'Populism, the last refuge of a Tory scoundrel'.
I too found it an interesting and informative post. Just have to ignore the trolls
In more interesting news, Rolex have put a jubilee bracelet on a gmt (like they did for decades before and nobody really liked it) and the bezel is a different shade........snore......I thought the original post was quite insightful, no idea what all the moaning is about?

I love to see these old adverts.
Thanks to the OP for posting.
Love those old ads.
How things have changed, respond by cutting the corner off an posting it ...
Refreshing thread :-)
I can remember in the early 70’s my best mates mum, buying his dad a pocket LED digital calculator for Xmas..
My mates dad was horrified that his wife had spent so much money on this thing, and made her return it..
He was a quarry manager, and the calculator cost was about 2 weeks wages..

Thanks for posting, OP. The forum could do with more threads like this.
I found it a fascinating snapshot of how new technology attracts a massive price premium for early adopters before volume production kicks in and prices plummet.
No doubt the Seiko was seen by many as being a far better watch than the Omega - both in terms of accuracy and functionality.
