As do I. 5 times World Champ, most pole positions, second in the list of all time GP winners, but I think we might be disapointed.

Anthony Joshua, also has a good chance I suppose and it would great to see either Cookie or Jimmy Anderson get something.

    Thin pickings this year.

Jonathan Rea not there!! Baffling, 4 time World Champion consecutive years. Not sure what else you're supposed to do to get a nomination.

    I'll guess at:

    1. Lewis Hamilton
    2. Geraint Thomas
    3. Lizzy Yarnold

I would like to see that, but will probably be Kane or Hamilton but so is Thomas and Joshua

Hamilton or Thomas for me. Just realised that Hamilton only has an MBE! Surely that has to change in the new year!

I feel Yarnold should probably win it as back to back olympic golds is an impressive achievement, however I cannot see her winning it as the sport is not main stream.

I don’t get the fuss about football, yes it’s popular, yes England did better than they have in the last few years, but they still lost, all the other contenders are winners

Exactly - pretty crazy really, maybe if he does 5!

I cannot see Thomas winning purely on the basis that he was not the first Brit to win the TdF and Froome won it more times (without getting SPOTY), unless all the Welsh folk block vote for him.

As for Lizzy Yarnold, I had to Google her

I think Kane fans will out vote Hamilton fans.

Hamilton's achievements I think are greater than anyone's there. No other 5 times World Champions with only 1 person (Schumacher) having achieved more in the entire history of the sport. Kane can't say that.

If the netball win was the best sporting moment of the year, Hamilton has no chance

It can only be because he's not UK born. Neither was Bradley Wiggins for that matter. Maybe Froome will get it once he equals the most TdF wins

What's more outrageous is Hamilton is at the same level as Derek Bell MBE, which is a complete travesty. Bell should have been knighted long ago. I can only assume he turned it down.

It was hardly an off year. He won the Giro d'Italia at the end of May & the Vuelta at the end of the 2017 season. The 3 Grand Tours back to back was a big ask

I think you might be right. I bit like when Ryan Giggs won.

Perhaps you have forgotten that Bell raced Sportscars so shared his winning cars/drives with the likes of Hans Stuck, Belloff and a chap called Jacky Ickx, notwithstanding he only" won 2 world championships and his total F1 points score was ONE. People like to mention he won 5 times at LeMans (which just happens to be the same number of World Champships won by LH, plus the same number of times LH has won at Silverstone) and his 4 Daytona wins (which happens to be the same number of wins that LH has achieved at Spa and Monza to name a few.

But I do agree that DB does deserves to be knighted (as should Damon Hill (OBE) and Mansell (CBE ).

As for LH I think he will have to wait until he retires before getting his assuming he actually cares.

Any of the following (or all of them)

Not enough people who are interested in Cricket actually care about SPOTY or actually know how to vote on-line.

They suffered many years of highs and lows watching England performances in Test Matches captained by Cook.

Can only remember some of the folks on TMS who called for him to be sacked or dropped.

    Not Welsh

Indeed - a true reflection of what it means to be a brave sporting hero.

Scoring 100 isn’t enough to win SPOTY, that’s like winning a tricky stage of the tour, both pale in comparison to winning a grand tour itself or clinching a hard fought series against stiff opposition away from home after years of defeats.

I don’t remember Stuart Broad winning SPOTY for scoring 169, surely that’s more of an achievement than an opening batsman getting a ton.

Thomas was a worthy winner and all the more deserved for not being a money grabbing ball chaser (golf/football etc), thrashing dog food in waiting round a grass oval for a corrupt betting vehicle (horse racing) or having an insufferably huge ego.

Probably the same as Foggy was told in the 1990's.

Foggy asked " 59 wins, 4 world championships, what else can I do?"

BBC bimbo replied " Win a fifth"

Biking is always looked down upon as opposed to 4 wheel racing, really not sure why.

Certainly more skilful, let's face it you can't fall off a car

  42. #42
Surprised Patrick Barrie didn’t get on the list along with the other spurious contenders mentioned.

That's more like it. Anyway being something of an underdog helps I feel.

    Anyone is a worthy winner

Hamilton 5 world championships has won it before
Yarnold two gold medals in consecutive games no Brit has ever done that plus the other World Cup wins
Jimmy Anderson taken more wickets than any other bowler for England!
Thomas winning the tour, I am with the Froome camp here
    Harry Kane golden boot winner
Dina Asher-Smith has done well but not a great yet?
