    Whatever happened to...

Songs you could sing along with? In my dotage, I can look forward to singing classics from the last century - what on earth can the millennials sing (other than "boof boof boof")...

Modern music is like babyfood, in the same way that food has to be soft and mashed up for a baby the music has to be simplified to a stage where it doesn’t require conscious thought to appreciate, it all sounds the same!

Whatever happened to lyrics?.....some stupid bird repeating a banal line 3 timess doesn’t constitute lyrical content in my book.......but what do I know, I’m 60, I had to endure the Beatles, Stones, Dylan, Steely Dan, Motown Soul, Eagles, Fleetwood Mac, Joni Mitchell, The Who, The Kinks......if only I’d been born 40 years later!

The caterpillar sheds his skin to find a butterfly within
Caterpillar sheds his skin to find a butterfly within
First there is a mountain, then there is no mountain, then there is
First there is a mountain, then there is no mountain

    and.....

She said, there is no reason
And the truth is plain to see'
But I wandered through my playing cards
And would not let her be
    One of sixteen vestal virgins
Who were leaving for the coast
And although my eyes were open
They might have just as well've been closed

    Halogen days Rodders, halogen days...

They were smoking strange stuff back then... Btw, the first one I had to look up; the second one is easy!

Two boys in my household. The first one loves the Dutch version of rap-music. Horrible stuff. My youngest (same upbringing...) is into old music and more-or-less modern 'indy'. His Spotify playlist is a blessing to my ears.

The wild dogs cry out in the night
As they grow restless, longing for some solitary company
I know that I must do what's right
As sure as Kilimanjaro rises like Olympus above the Serengeti

I can't believe anyone will ever write a better set of lyrics than Africa by Toto.

What better time to revisit this.

A diamond necklace played the pawn
Hand in hand some drummed along, oh
    To a handsome mannered baton
    A blind class aristocracy
Back through the opera glass you see
The pit and the pendulum drawn
    Columnated ruins domino

Canvass the town and brush the backdrop
    Are you sleeping?

Surfs Up - The Beach Boys (lyrics by Van Dyke Parks).

Did you ever see a woman
Coming out of New York City

    One pill makes you larger
And one pill makes you small
And the ones that mother gives you
    Don't do anything at all
    Go ask Alice
    When she's ten feet tall

And if you go chasing rabbits
And you know you're going to fall
Tell 'em a hookah smoking caterpillar
    Has given you the call...
    Call Alice
    When she was just small

When the men on the chessboard
Get up and tell you where to go
And you've just had some kind of mushroom
And your mind is moving low
    Go ask Alice
    I think she'll know

    When logic and proportion
    Have fallen sloppy dead
And the White Knight is talking backwards
And the Red Queen's off with her head
    Remember what the Dormouse said
    Feed your head
    Feed your head

Well, I just got into town about an hour ago
Took a look around, see which way the wind blow
Where the little girls in their Hollywood bungalows

Are you a lucky little lady in The City of Lights?
    Or just another lost angel?
City of Night, City of Night
City of Night, City of Night, whoa, c'mon

Absolutely here sure is, but you have to put some effort into finding it as there is much more dross thanks to self-publication, and anything new and good has to compete against all that has come before it to gain airplay.

A faint haze of delirium creeps upon me
All at once a tall stranger I suddenly see
He's dressed in a silver sparked glittering gown
And his golden beard flows nearly down to the ground.

Fancy having to look up Donovan - shame on you...

I always liked "The Mississippi Delta was shining like a National guitar...." something just brilliant about it, in a simple way.

Maybe some of the drug-inspired lyrics of the 60s and 70s were a bit shite when you analyse them......but at least they were good shite

Best of Jefferson Airplane's on my CD player now......White Rabbit's a cracking song!

    Drinking in the morning sun
    Blinking in the morning sun
    Shaking off a heavy one
Yeah, heavy like a loaded gun

What made me behave that way?
    Using words I never say
I can only think it must be love
Oh anyway, it's looking like a beautiful day

Someone tell me how I feel
It's silly wrong, but vivid right
Oh, kiss me like a final meal
Yeah, kiss me like we die tonight

'Cause holy cow, I love your eyes
And only now I see the light
Yeah, lying with you half awake
Oh, anyway, it's looking like a beautiful day

When my face is chamois creased
If you think I wink, I did
    Laugh politely at repeats
Yeah, kiss me when my lips are thin

'Cause holy cow, I love your eyes
And only now I see the light
Yeah, lying with you half awake
    Stumbling over what to say
Well, anyway, it's looking like a beautiful day

    So throw those curtains wide
One day like this a year would see me right
    Throw those curtains wide
One day like this a year would see me right

    Throw those curtains wide
One day like this a year would see me right
    Throw those curtains wide
One day like this a year would see me right for life

    Dogs at Midnight
Words and Music by Tom Paxton

You might hear dogs at midnight,
    High up a treeless hill,
    Workin' their own graveyard shift,
    And howlin' out their fill,
While down below in Coal Town,
    A woman lies awake,
And hears her sleeping husband fight,
    For every breath he takes.
    [Cho:]
Oh, the rockslide may not get you,
The fire might pass you by.
    When the gas goes up,
    It might not be your time to die;
    But every year gets harder
    To draw a simple breath
When the black lung gets you,
    That's the kiss of death

You might see old men waiting,
    On the county courthouse green.
    Tellin' tales at noontime,
Of the bitter sights they've seen.
It makes a postcard picture there,
    Beside the courthouse door,
Unless you know just why they're waitin',
    And what they're waitin' for.

    Bullet In The Gun
    Planet Perfecto

There's a bullet in the gun
There's a fire in your heart
    You will move all mountains
    That stand in your path
Till the end of all time
    I'll be by your side
    Always dream that I'm yours
    And I'll dream you're mine

    Fight fire with fire
    Fight fire with fire
    Light enemies with love

I left my job my boss my car and my home
    I'm leaving for a destination I still don't know
Somewhere nobody must have duties at all
And if you like this you can follow me so let's go,
    Follow me
    And let's go
To a place where belong and leave our troubles at home come with me
We can go to a paradise of love and joy a destination unknown
Now I won't feel those heavy shoulders no more
My life got better now I finally enjoy,
Yes all the people want to come here and so?
Come on and join us you can do that now let's go
    Follow me
    And let's go
To the place where we belong and leave our troubles at home come with me
We can go to a paradise of love and joy a Destination Unknown

Can't listen to this without playing the awsome video in my mind

Some lyrics make me smile, in a good way.......these by John Prine always do......

She was a level-headed dancer on the road to alcohol
And I was just a soldier on my way to Montreal
Well she pressed her chest against me
About the time the jukebox broke
Yeah, she gave me a peck on the back of the neck
And these are the words she spoke

Blow up your TV throw away your paper
Go to the country, build you a home
Plant a little garden, eat a lot of peaches
Try an find Jesus on your own

Always liked this from Al Stewart,

On a morning from a Bogart movie
In a country where they turn back time
You go strolling through the crowd like Peter Lorre
    Contemplating a crime
She comes out of the sun in a silk dress running
Like a watercolor in the rain
    Don't bother asking for explanations
She'll just tell you that she came
In the year of the cat

Maybe because I like old movies, or cats?
