SOTC and hopes for the future

Hi all, newish here, but not to watch collecting. These have accumulated over 20 years.

I'm on the hunt for a second FPJ. IMO, he is the joint best watchmaker alive today, together with Roger Smith.

Thanks all, for the kind words. Ranking them is hard because I still love and wear them all (I'm not a flipper, hoarder or seller). If pushed...

Stunning collection and the FP Journe is sublime. I would love to be in a position where a Patek 5146 doesn't make my top 4!

Pretty damn good collection - you do have a wonderful Journe. Which one are you eyeing up next?

  20. #20
Thanks again, all. I'm quite indecisive, so I do a lot of mulling over the entire situation before buying. For instance, it took me many years to find the right Day-Date, and save for it.

I really want a Chronometre Optimum. I like the QP, Tourbillon and CB as well, but the Optimum is my personal pick of the bunch. Double-barrel, remontoire and dual-escape wheels, truly spectacular.

I'd also like a rose-gold Moser PC or the rose-gold Endeavour, either or both with a black dial. I don't have a "gold coloured" watch at the moment, they are all white metal, so the RG would make a nice change.

A fantastic collection, I hope you continue to enjoy it in the best of health whilst you ponder your next move. As another Zenith 1969 owner, it's lovely to see that in a collection alongside some other venerable pieces. I love mine to bits and can't ever see myself without it.

A very enviable collection. I love the FPJ, you do not see many of them about. I was hoping you would post up pics of your collection when you listed som of the items in a different thread.

Most excellent collection, well-judged, if I may say so. Regarding the F P Journe, you compare him to Roger Smith, but doesn't he have all his models made elsewhere? Not that I've ever seen one, and probably never will .

Thanks again, all. Patience is key, not getting blown off course by other very very nice pieces when saving for a grail, and believe me, I've had to save. But that gives me time to think, and sometimes re-adjust perspectives. Never buy a watch in a hurry, or because everyone else tells you to, but let the right watch find you. (How Zen).

FP Journe and Roger Smith are closely linked via George Daniels. The FPJ dials used to be outsourced until FPJ acquired the dial-making company. Everything is now in-house in Geneva.

Congratulations on acquiring such a stunning collection over the past 20 years.

I would have to add Philippe Dufour (my favourite Master Watchmaker) and Kari Voutilainen, to your list of Watchmakers.

Great group you have there, thanks for sharing. I totally agree with your philosophy re buying watches. While my group of eight is nothing like the level of yours, they've all been considered and mulled over for a long while before buying, even my Datejust which I bought in 1984, long before I came to this forum and was bitten by the bug. Indeed my last was an Archimede back in 2015, bought to test the waters before a yet to happen Dornbluth purchase.

Yes I agree, there's some real greats out there at the moment. I guess FPJ is the most accessible of this group as he puts out about 800 watches/year. The others are extremely hard to find, and super-expensive. And I really like the FPJ design vernacular, very distinctive and unmistakable.

Thanks again for all the kind words, all. I'm surprised they are so well-received as we all have different tastes, and some are perhaps a little marmitey. A lot of people love the 5146, it is a very good-looking watch.

A great collection you've got there.

I really like the 5513 and the El Primero. I've been looking at the El Primero for a while and I'm hoping it will be my next major purchase in the next year or so.

Amazed for a bunch of pedants no-ones moaned at the bezel alignments - shows what a great collection it is.

5513 and 5712 both stand out for me. On PP’s website it says only 60m WR - thought it was the same as the 5711.

Sorry, I tend to leave the bezels wherever they land during cooking or whatever I was last using them for. I briefly lent the Red 1680 to my son, so he's clearly got a bit of OCD going on.

The 5712 has case correctors for the moon phase and date, hence reduced WR. In truth, the only watches I would ever swim in are the 16610 and 114300.

Thanks. The one least worn, sadly, is the JLC. It's too smart and formal for anything but a very smart suit or black tie, so infrequently needed. It's perfect at 37mm.
