Thread: Gambling - do you indulge?

Mug betting is key to prolonging your relationship with bookmakers, as they're getting better at detecting matched betters or 'bonus abusers'

Personally I ran through a bunch of welcome offers and don't have the time to dedicate to the daily grinding, although occasionally I'll get emailed some higher quality offers I'll take the time to do - usually around big sporting events.

Highly unlikely that 99.5% matches can regularly be found (and on events where £100 stakes are not out of place).

I can tell you from experience that a regular weekend of football generally provides a few decent 99.5%+ matches for the bigger bookmakers. The smaller ones typically offer lower odds.

Regardless, anywhere down to a 98% match is usually acceptable (since mug stakes are usually in the £10/£20 range)

A colleague described it as a tax on stupidity. I am certainly fully paid up if that is the case. Fruit machines in my late teens, and the ridiculous odds of the lottery in later years. I had 5 numbers come up in the early days of the lottery, just under £1,400 win, a small fortune to someone acting as a carer with the government paying me £21 a week carer's allowance on top of dole money.

I stopped playing the fruit machines and decided to save up to buy my own. I never did it, but it broke the cycle for me. I did the lottery hoping that I would win the big one. A spreadsheet told me I was paying out more than I was winning. After many years at it I ended up £1,500 down.

Now I bet on nothing and don't miss the highs (few) or the lows (many).

We were discussing this the other day and one of my friends used the same description for the lottery. Another friend had different interpretation - he said it was the poor buying hope - which is just incredibly sad.

Similar to many here. I occasionally dabble in the lottery and go racing even less frequently.

The only time I walked into a bookies was in 2003 when I had a hunch that Italy would beat Wales in the Six Nations. I put down a fiver, walked out with thirty quid and haven't gone back into one since. I only wish I had other hunches which would turn out to be as profitable. Or just profitable full stop.

Never done so, when I was younger I could never understand it so I was never really interested in it. When the lottery started here friends started taking out tickets "Just as a one off" Now I see people in supermarkets getting several tickets and it seems to be costing them up to £15 a go. Not really for me not something I will ever really understand.

Only sporadically will i bet on sports, but if theres a huge euromillions pot, i will always buy a ticket.

I do enjoy online poker though, but i see that more about people, analytics, maths and psychology rather than luck, so not entirely sure i count that as gambling.... others may disagree!

Casinos, mostly. The two of the more advantageous things in this regard are casinos that have no wagering and free spins. Basically, free spins mean that you gain extra spins because of a bonus that is certain of that machine or provider. It can, for example, be that you need to insert a certain amount in order to gain the bonuses etc. Information giver spinia casino review

I haven’t the time, a lad I work with seems good at it but has to sit in front of the tv all Saturday. He has a £50 weekly limit he can put in. He starts on Friday morning usually a rugby match and finishes on Sunday. He is 11k up since Christmas! He made about 35k lat year
But is running out of online bookies as they keep closing his accounts or limiting the amount he can gamble. One said all his bets had to be agreed with a manager before they could be accepted.

Lost £5 on the horses at the grand national. That’ll do until next year.

Depends if you see it as entertainment. You could spend a night in a casino, at the horses, football match, a meal out and spend £100 at each one. Is loosing £100 at a casino any different to spending the same watching your team get beat?

I don't gamble. I won a big bunch of 10p pieces on a one-armed bandit the first time I ever tried one. I got my dad to put a quid on l'Escargot for me in 1975. Then I decided to quit while I was ahead.

I did take part in a lottery syndicate in the '90s for a few weeks; that may have eaten into my profits a bit come to think of it.

I bought a lottery ticket on the very first day it was held & picked 1-6 as my numbers, unsurprisingly I didn't win & on the day those numbers come up I will be mightily miffed as I haven't bought a ticket since.
Funny how bookies all have big houses & spensie cars!

Annoying that he can lose £1000 a week and he will be welcome yet once someone starts winning all bets are off. I know why and I would prob get people to do the betting for me and giving them a cut of any winnings.

A big no. Thankfully I've never had an interest in betting on anything, even the sports I have a huge affection for. One of my favourite sayings is that the best quality carpet over the largest of areas can be found in a casino. Sadly most of the bets are placed by people who can afford it the least. This "when the fun stops stop" bollocks is just a limp attempt to appease the organisations trying to reel these companies in. They don't want anyone to stop at all.

Yes and I’m either terrible at it or have plain bad luck lol. I did have a good spell at laying horses on Betfair for a while but lost my full stack when a front runner fell at a fence and caused a bit of a pile up and the donkey I’d bet on to lose strolled home!

I very occasionally do the lottery or a scratch card. Maybe once every 2 or 3 months. Went to a casino once for a friends birthday and spent £50 to watch a little ball clatter around a spinning wheel for 20 minutes. After that we retired to the bar, drank a bit and then went home.
Not really my bag but can understand the attraction and see no harm as long as it doesn’t effect your life.
Some people do have a problem though and they do need to be helped.

    Gambling - do you indulge?

If you have an addictive personality, it’s not a wise path to follow.

I love a gamble, always have. Casino, horses, cards, dogs, anything goes really. Thankfully I have a limit and know when to walk away and it's not a daily activity only the odd weekend when I'm out with mates. Unfortunately many don't and a good friend of mine lost everything as he simply couldn't stop.

With https://www.mightytips.com/, you will be able to rely on people whose main occupation is to profit from sports betting. These individuals are professionals who rely on data, statistical analysis and, more recently, on machine learning to decide where and when to bet. You will get a solution for sure.

Yes, but strangely only on Leicester City winning the league.

Oh,and I throw a couple of quid away on the Grand National most years in memory of my mum who enjoyed it.

Never placed a bet and wouldn't know how to, lol. I occasionally buy a 'Set For Life' lottery ticket maybe once a month while I'm in Aldi at the check out. I've won £10 recently woopy doo.

Very rarely bet on the football, despite attending most WBA games, but I do like the horses, doubles mainly. Although find myself betting less and less now unless it’s a good race or I’m at the track.

I do the Irish on a weekly basis. Had a couple of wins and at £7 a line (3 numbers) you get good returns as Betfred pay 700/1, sometimes 750/1. A win a couple of years ago got me a nice Porsche 944 as a weekend toy.

Thinking of sacking it off though soon as not had a sniff for over 20 months and at £42 a week it’s adding up. Genuinely thinking of putting the money into a horse syndicate instead, the returns are nowhere near as good but is a nice soft introduction to ownership and I’d get to spend time at a local yard.

Betting is too accessible these days IMO, I have a mate who got into £25k of debt (twice) playing roulette on his phone. £20 a spin soon adds up quickly...and ruins relationships even quicker.

I’m up the snooker club most weeks and all the 20-somethings are just hammering accys all day long on the football. The days of reading form, walking to the bookies, watch the race and picking up winnings the following day are long gone. That said, all my bets are online for convenience.

    I bet horses most days
    Nothing huge
However, I too have grave concerns with accessibility for younger gamblers

Accas and specials - money here and there - online slots and roulettes - it’s just too easy

Make no mistake - I’ve backed horses since aged 11 and those who say you can’t make it pay have never tried
You can - but only if you are specialise in certain markets

However, then the bookmaker limits hit bet or stops you completely
I tried to get a mere £15 on a horse at odds of 3/1 yesterday with that superb best bookie bet365......
I received a message stating I was above the £3 maximum stake allowed at those odds on my account....

Yes - it’s the only hobby that the better you get at it - the worse you’ll find getting a bet on lol

    Coral - banned
    Hills - banned
    Betway - banned
365 - hugely limited as above
Ladbrokes - will take a bet to go about £50
    Skybet - no major issues

But please please tell the “kids” to look at it as a tiny bit of fun - and keep a close eye on their bank accounts

I bet on two horse races in my life ( both grand national) one once ( I am 63 ) I flutter on lottery euro and nat when its a rollover (so infrequently) I do have premium bonds (which I like because I can get my money back if I don't win ), I am not one of life's risk takers so am destined to remain poor . LOL.

I’ve had the same at a bricks and mortar store. Bet £200 on a 3-1 winner. Then the next day I went back to place another bet and was told I was limited to £50 at SP.

I’ve mentioned on the Premier League thread that I usually stick a few quid on my teams opponents due to some fairly long odds . We’ve lost six times in the League alone which has more than covered everything I’ve put on . I’ve also cashed out at opportune times when we’ve been losing in games we’ve come back to win. It’s been an usually profitable season so far. The money that Ive got on the scouse winning the league is pretty safe too.
The best one this season though was a bit special for all the right reasons. We were in a box for City v Everton with a 50/50 split of fans from both teams . We all lumped a wedge on Fabian Delph getting booked @7/1 . Many times during the game, he was late and lucky to get away with a tackle until early in the second half he clattered into a City player. He stayed down for a minute or two with the ref hovering around him. When he got the inevitable yellow , the box erupted . Biggest cheer of the game . In all the euphoria, we just lumped all the winnings on another bet. If that one comes in😳😳

Other than that, I have little to no knowledge of horses and rely on others for ‘tips’ . That side of it has been indifferent .
I did have a good couple of days at The Cheltenham Festival last year and again in November but this was due to blind luck mainly.

I cant play cards and only discovered Blackjack was ‘21’ when I first went to Las Vegas years back . Every time a I’ve been back since, Ill play the $5 tables knowing that Ill generally get a good few hours play in without it costing me anything and getting a few drinks in too. It was always about the people you’d meet at the tables .

Not really gambling I suppose, but two young lads in my area play poker, both online and real tournaments.

One is worth a few million, the other several hundred thousand.

The millionaire is unremarkable to meet (we have mutual friends) but clearly very intelligent around numbers.

I've played poker for a while. During a stretch of unemployment I did it for a living... It was harrowing. The stress of possibly getting sucked out on and not being able to may my car payment or rent that month kind of took all of the fun out of it for me. I came to the realization really fast that no matter how good you are (and I was decent but nothing like a real pro) at the end of the day, it's still gambling. Being good, means you can typically get your money in with the odds in your favor, but that does not by any means ensure that you won't still lose.

I still go out with friends to play now and again, but I tend to stick to lower limit cash games and cheap tournaments now, and do it mostly for the social aspect now.

I have £10 on the footy on weekends only and do the national lottery/Euro. That's as far as my gambling goes.

I'm not really up for banning it, as I bet on the National once a year, play the lottery once a month and even play a bit in Vegas. I don't mind it occasionally for the social aspect, but the normalisation of it in society is worrying.

A friend owns a number of casinos and arcades on the south coast.

He's a bit cagey about his collection but seems to have a different (expensive) watch on most times I see him. He has at least 2 Daytonas.

This tells me all I need to know about how well the odds are stacked.

Have you got anything for us ;-)

Tough meeting to call any bankers, but inevitably, when festival finished there will be a few were you think could have backed them.

Only thing im really looking to back is Aso in the Ryanair.
